Mooney--an under appreciated coach.

I don’t care about freaking VDU or Lee Art U. I despise them and loath them no
matter what our record is against them. The primary reason I want a change at coach,
is because Mooney shows little to no reaction to getting his clock cleaned by those jerks.
If Hardt cannot show some balls and at least put pressure on Mooney to beat them once a
year, then maybe we need a new AD.

MAYBE we need a new AD???

the regression from the style of play OOC is striking.

the first half points:
Tanner putback off an off. board.
Johnston - beat the shot clock 3
Johnston - 3 from a kick from Daughtry (playing thru the low post, open look)
Johnston - 3, think it was a step back off the dribble.
Daughtry - wild runner near shot clock, no idea how it went in.
Tanner - layup off a nice pass from Robinson
Note: zero FT attempts:

Tell me the offensive system sucks without telling me the offensive system sucks. Being generous, we got 7 points from continued perimeter passing aka Moonball in the first half.

Time for change.

It's just sad to see what has happened to Richmond basketball. I remember being a young kid watching them go to a sweet sixteen. Watching that team go on that run made me fall in love with basketball. I just can't even imagine a Mooney team now every being close to that level of that team.
97-98 team got me hooked. Then we joined the A10 in 2001 and remember how excited I was our AD was ambitious playing in a big time conference. When we made the Sweet 16 in 2011 I finally thought we were finally pushing past the narrative of just being a giant killer and perhaps building to be a top program in the A10. Investments came, but the results varied and now we’ve bottomed out with no end in sight. All while the administration makes excuses about how hard it is when they’re plenty of great acadmeic-athletic schools.

I have never been so apathetic about this team and administration. I love that we’re good in lax and womens hoops. BFD when your main revenue sport is a joke. It is an utter embarrassment how mediocre our “revenue” sports have been the past decade compared to the decade before, all while upgrading facilities, I’m sick of it.

yes, I started watching how many times we had a player with the ball inside the 3 point arc. Many possessions is was basically never.

This is Moon's offense. He built it, he stands by it, he doesn't run anything else.

15 points in a half and the worst 11:22 in Spider history are 100% on him.

Time for change.

Hi everyone,

I'm a first time poster but long time reader to the boards. My first Spider memory was going in 1997 to the Richmond UNC game at the Robbins Center when i was like 10. While I live up in Fairfax now, I try to make as many spiders games as I can. Anyway, finally had to get an account and register seeing some of the feedback on the Charleston Southern thread about Mooney. I don't think people appreciate him enough.

  1. We went to NCAA 3 years ago and won a game against a Power 5 team that had just won big 10 tournament
  2. The next year we were conference champions in the regular season. While it was disappointing to bow out against St. Joe's in A10 tournament it was a solid year.
  3. We consistently lead the country in FT % and many times are in top 15 in 3 point percentage.
  4. He is very classy and nice and we graduate our players. In short a great representer of our university.
I decided to do some research and see if I was off base but get this. He has a higher winning percentage than all but 2 Richmond coaches. He has a higher percentage than Wainwright, Bill Dooley, Lou Goetz, Carol Slone, Lewis Mills, Lester Hooker and even Malcom Pitt. Facts don't lie. I think fans have too high expectations. Little ole Richmond isn't going to go to the sweet 16 every year. But do we have a better coach than say Davidson, St Joe, or Loyola Chicago--unequivocally!! Enjoy what you have while you have it spider fans!!
This keeps making me laugh:

0 for 2 so far.

What happened to the up tempo, crashing the boards, pressing, heavy subbing style of basketball we played in the non-con?
It’s possible we are facing better teams and it just hasn’t worked.

More likely we un-adapted and went back to the same old same old because that’s what we feel comfortable running.

The answer is in your question. We finished our OOC where we were successful doing those things against inferior competition on balance. Early on in A10 play we played Fordham and St Bon - not good teams. Then we ran up against better A10 teams where we weren’t able to do those things well.

I just don’t understand why we’re not even trying to play the same style of basketball we played in OOC - whether it would work or not aside
