OT: Coaching Changes

*23*

Assistant coach
Just find it interesting to track some of the coaching changes of interest to me and/or Spidernation.

Belmont: Casey Alexander leaves to take Kansas State Job.
Providence: Kim English out. I know that I and others were a little perplexed on why he got that job and was such a hot coach. .540 win percentage at Mason with 9th place and 5th place finishes in A10. Damn, Providence could have had Mooney last time.

Yeah, English was a ridiculous choice at the time, and time has proved that to be accurate.

Now’s their chance!

I’d still happily take Miller or Earl Grant here.
I always liked Wes Miller. He does kind of fit that mould of successful mid major coach goes to power conference and can't win big enough, like Archie at URI. But I do think Wes has something left to prove and I am betting he has success at next stop.

With his buyout at Cinci, he would be too steep for us, but loved what he did at UNCG.

Not that it’s relevant because we aren’t searching for a new coach, but I don’t think that’s how it would work. He was let go, cincy is on the hook for his remaining contract. Whatever we choose to pay him would offset that figure and cincy pays the balance, or if the contract was well written, it would nullify the remainder.

At least that’s how they normally work, as I understand it.

Yep, if anything, it potentially makes him cheaper. Because someone else can lowball a salary and Cinci has to make up the difference.

There are usually clauses about market value so a guy can’t say like just pay me $1 because my former employer will still pay me the $3m plus, but there’s no fixed number. Maybe instead of $1.5m somewhere, you could get away with paying him $1m and reasonably claim that’s his market value now with Cinci on the hook for the other $2m.

One of the USD coaches that got fired (not the one that just fired) worked as an SDSU assistant for some crazy cheap price (not market) but basically wanted to stay in the game for next opportunity. It would be nice to have this discussion for real. But seems Triumvirate will dictate that timing some year in the future. Exciting stuff.
