25-26 Roster Expectations

He looked like a player that was ready for college basketball physically, but the decision making wasn’t there to me.

If he does start it would have to be at the expense of the transfer guards, which makes sense from the build for the future perspective. Once again, I guess it is possible during the weak OOC, but would be surprised if he is ready to be a starter in A10 play. Will be interesting to follow.
Agreed only repeating what I was told by insider

Really tough to read into too much with this level of competition.
I did feel like Argabright has different gear than our other guards. Tyne is quick but Argabright really anticipates and can get places in a hurry in the open court.
Daughtry looked pretty solid, was expecting more rust with the long lay off.
Lopez and Johnston did not show too much. Really hoping just having an adjustment period. Probably going to need one or both to be scorers.

My thoughts exactly on this “game 1”. Will get a better read on Saturday, but both Johnson and Lopez have been disappointing to date. Expected more from Lopez as he did have some productive games vs the A10 last year. Maybe he is struggling with the offense like we have seen with other newcomers.

In the same vein, Beagle looks much better than last year. Definitely understands what is he supposed to do and is being aggressive. Now if he could just hold onto the ball to cut down the turnovers.

Given it seems based on what we hear that Coach still believes he can bring in 4-year (or 5-year with redshirts) quality players and student athletes who actually stick around Richmond, if the current lineup (Tyne / Tanner / Lopez / Johnston / Walz) doesn't produce on Saturday night, there is no reason to give it more time in my opinion.

Let’s get the two freshmen in the starting lineup and see what they can do: Tyne / Argabright / JRob / Daughtry(?) / Walz (with heavy minutes from Beagle). I would honestly rather watch a team like the 17–18 group when Gilly was a freshman than what we saw last year and I fear that we will see with transfers getting many of the minutes. That team only won 12 games, but still went 9–9 in conference and beat VCU twice and made us all optimistic for the future.

Agreed. Was thinking last night that our best lineup probably was Tyne, Argabright, Daughtry, Beagle, Walz. Obviously very small sample size, and that lineup has issues (shooting, quickness at the 3 and 4). But those were probably the best 5 last night.

These 5 plus JRob is 6 with 2 G and 4 F. So, 2 G/Wings need to step up for an 8 man rotation. And, they need to be shooters. I know the talk is play more guys, but it would be nice to have 8 guys good enough to get most of the minutes every night. The forwards/Bigs seem good. We need shooters out there!! Pretty concerning to hear about so many airballs and bad shots last night.

I don’t need to see another game to know that Tyne / Tanner / Lopez / Johnston / Walz is not the best lineup and definitely not the starting lineup.

Will be very interesting to see what the Saturday lineup looks like, but from the comments on ECU’s first game I would be very surprised if the Spiders started with the “small” lineup. In fact, it may be the opposite where a “big” lineup is used that also would not be the expected “best players play” one. There has been so many “line changes” that I can’t say exactly what the best functioning lineup is yet. From the perspective of who has looked the best overall with a very small sample size, it has been Tyne / Argabright / JRob / Daughtry / Beagle.

Don’t think that is the 5 I am starting, but do hope that if the transfers aren’t producing then they get more bench time. However, it seems that Mooney may be preaching the everyone plays mantra at this point and just expects max effort for 3 minutes. I guess we will see.

I think the minutes were a bit all over the place as Mooney treated this like a third scrimmage, but based on what I saw, I'd cut this down to a 9/10 man rotation:
  • Tyne, Johnston, Lopez, Argabright at G
  • Daughtry, J-Rob, Tanner, McGlothin (10th man) at wing/F
  • Walz, Beagle at C
I'd cut most/all of AP's minutes unless his size is needed due to foul trouble, and I didn't see enough from Thomas to warrant playing over the other 4 guards listed above. I'd also cut some of Tanners minutes to give more time to J-Rob and Daughtry.

Did I see ECU played four 6’10” players for a total of 74 minutes? So maybe we do match their big lineup. Unless JRob and Daughtry can handle that matchup.

Beagle has small hands.
