25-26 Roster Expectations

it certainly hasn't. I'm hoping McG is a different level player though.
love that he started in the exhibition stat sheet.
little worried JRob may have been an afterthought.
I saw the box score after my post. Very good news for our team ceiling this season. If he can be the guy at the 3 I think that would be good 👍

I personally believe a players development comes mostly in the gym and weight room, grinding 6 days a week all year long.
you get to show your development in games, but you get better in practice.
a redshirt year isn't spent sitting on your ass. you grind. you get better just as much as you would have if active.

it's in a coach's best interest not to redshirt a kid. have him available. maybe he can help. you need to win games to keep your job.
but I believe it's in many kids' best interest to take the redshirt unless there's a clear path to major early playing time. get better. cash the check. have your 4 best years to maximize your college career, your chances to play after college, and your college NIL.

just my opinion.
Sman, I always value your opinion. Don’t misinterpret my commentary.

I’ve watched this program diminish for the last 15 years. Sure, there have been moments but the things we are doing just don’t seem to work with any consistency, particularly in an age where kids are chasing dollars as much as dreams. There’s zero guarantee that a fourth/fifth year guy is going to stick around.

It’s really problematic to me that we aren’t using every tool available to us to win now. It’s always about development and next year and waiting for the stars to align. Redshirting guys who arguably could help now just feeds this “let’s win down the road” nonsense.

Maybe it’s in URs interest but maybe not. We will literally never know unless we try something different like actually putting these recruits on the court in year one.

1254am rant over.

There are never guarantees, but UR has shown that if the staff can recruit a player that can significantly contribute then the player DOES stick around for the fourth and possibly 5th year. This seems to be because the player wants to graduate with a Richmond degree and likes the program. Walz is one of two forth year players in the A10. The problem is the rest of the recruits didn’t cut the mustard and/or UR didn’t get enough of them. The list of players who left UR to chase money is very short. The only one I can think of is Dji, BUT he was a graduate with a bonus year and leaving to take the money was the decision nearly every player would take. I know I would have if I were in the same situation.

I think it is still too early to tell if the redshirting plan will work for UR or not. However, having the benefit of hindsight if we played the recruits to this point instead of redshirting them, the results would have easily been worse. The Spiders simply haven’t lost any A10 caliber players. The only two we don’t know about are the current redshirt freshman and I am cautiously optimistic on that front. As I said in an earlier post, I expect these two redshirts to be different than the rest.

I definitely understand the frustration of continuing to kick the can down the road and that simply is because there has been no plan. If you don’t have a plan, you don’t get anywhere.

so is Will Harper the forgotten man?
I'm fine redshirting Homenick and Richardson. weights and practice. can't play 15. but seems clear Harper is #13 this year. will he ever see the floor? hopefully in a blowout.

Not a huge surprise, but Mooney confirms that Homenick and Richardson will be redshirting.

Definitely. Called it as soon as I saw the bonus period during exhibition. I am sure they talked to Harper, but you can tell he wants to play. He may be able to get some time in the OOC if the Spiders play well, but don’t see him on the court come A10 time.

told this season
He looked like a player that was ready for college basketball physically, but the decision making wasn’t there to me.

If he does start it would have to be at the expense of the transfer guards, which makes sense from the build for the future perspective. Once again, I guess it is possible during the weak OOC, but would be surprised if he is ready to be a starter in A10 play. Will be interesting to follow.
