2026 Portal Prospects

Doing some quick math with assumptions here. If AA got $750K to return that would be 20% of our payroll if we were operating with $4.5 million. I don’t think we would spend 20% on one guy. Mooney also said that not everyone gets NIL. So let’s assume the bottom 4 players on the bench do not. So that’s 11 guys. Let’s say for sake of argument that we are operating with $5 million. What is stopping us from spending $2 million and landing someone like Cam Boozer next year and splitting the rest among the other 9 guys (after AA and 1 elite super star)

Another way to think about it, if the 10th guy was getting 1.7 million, I assume the 48th-50 guy are all getting $1 million. Why don’t we offer a million to those guys and have a roster of AA, the 48th-50th NIL valued players, and then split the other $1 million among 7 other guys.

I dont think that list is right. Not sure where they get their numbers but it was widely reported Rodney Rice JR got 3 million. Would net 3 guys or more on Uconn getting 2+.
Correct. I am pretty sure Silas Demary got 2+ million. And, Ky paid over 20 million, so some guys definitely made more than guys on the list.

I like the part “Odom’s son is his agent”. Sure let’s overpay this client. Nepotism at its finest.

It is sure going to be easy to not like college sports anymore.

Like I keep saying, there are a ton of guys out there under utilized at the p5 level that we could use. Mooney should know these Philly guys right? The Richmond assistants should have a report on every guy available, and finding out probale NIL and availability, but somehow dont think that is happening based on last two classes in portal.

You must like them at least a little bit. You are posting in the off season on a message board of a team that had a losing season this year. :)
Not my clearest post ever, but I said “going to be” for a couple of reasons. First, there is no transparency or stable market for player salaries so this “claim” about market value for this individual isn’t something I have any belief in. Second, if the “true costs” of assembling a team rise to these astronomical levels then the costs have to be passed on the audience and I for one will be opting out. The product is the same with a potentially significant higher cost.

I also typed “college sports” and that is too general. This issue is currently specific to men’s basketball and of course football.

But I do agree, I spend lots of time reading and discussing a dumpster fire of a program.

for one thing, anyone so good that we'd offer $2M would also be getting offered $2M+ at a high major program with payroll much larger than ours.
if you're $2M good, you want to play with other $2M players at a high major. not at Richmond or any other non P5.

now if you offer someone $4M like BYU did ... yes you can sway someone!

I see your point. $2 million at Duke is better than $2 million at Richmond. I agree. What we need to do then is identify those guys who are getting X amount to play at P4 and offer them 20-25% more than that to come here. $2 million is too high in this case but I think within the $750K-$1.25 million range we can do that.

We have become such a dead program its crazy. I know, I know the portal is not open yet. But we have nothing going on.

this clip says NOTHING

I can infer JOC asked about who we are going after, and Mooney is in a wait and see - BUFFER time. Unbelievable. No motivation in our program now. WOW.

Other than AA, we don't have any guys on the roster we are anxious about, waiting to hear confirm staying or leaving. Just a complete sh%$ show.

I spend a lot of time on here discussing a dumpster fire as well. :)

He offers zero excitement. How about saying in an excited voice how excited we are about the portal and how we are looking forward to adding impact players.

Now in fairness to Mooney, JOC starting the clip after he asked the question, you don't really have context to what he is responding to. So, terrible job by JOC, sharing a clip with no background.

But yes, it is yet another clip talking about nothing and having no urgency about anything, which is standard Mooney. As for the lack of urgency about other guys on our roster, perhaps there isn't any for a reason. It's not like we have any other sure fire players we need to lock up and its not like any of our players are going to sought after commodities by other teams.

So maybe, we are not resigning guys hoping they hit the portal and/or waiting them out to pay them as little as possible. That is what I would do. Outside of Daughtry, I wouldn't give any player more than 20K. If they don't like it, the portal is there for you to explore.

this was a shorter clip of the longer (very good) interview posted last week. he's talking about our existing players. there's a longer break this year before the portal opens. it gives them more time to talk to the current roster and work things out.

you can't attract a sack of potatoes in the portal for under $100k these day, so I'd rather keep our guys if even as depth pieces than try to replace everyone.
