25-26 Roster Expectations

AP - I thought he looked decent when he had the ball in the high post a bit. But the 5 spot is pretty full. I don't see any evidence that points to him being a good 3 point shooter in games. Again, hoping to be proven wrong. And missing most of the offseason is certainly not going to help him improve. But he now has a season of real game experience, so that could help.

One thing from the podcast that scares me a bit, was the talk that Johnston seemed to be the only guy that when he takes the 3 - you feel like it is a make. If Tyne and who ever is playing the wing can't make threes, think David Thomas needs to get a good long look. Actually feel pretty good about our 4 and 5 positions shooting the 3.

I’m disappointed but not surprised that Tyne is getting calls to be our starting PG. two years being a mainstay in the rotation gets him that but if he plays like last year, we are going to have a difficult time raising performance.

I wouldn't say he is getting "calls" to be our starting PG, unless you are referencing Mooney, who is the ultimate call maker. I think the overall sentiment is that Tyne best role would be that as a 6th man but also think Mooney is comfortable with him knowing the offense and thus he will be installed as our starting PG.

The only defense I have of Tyne and his performance last year is look at the the players he was supposed to be setting up last year in our offense. Tanner, AP, Walz, Dusan, BA White, Beagle. Damn Kyrie would have looked less than stellar trying to get those guys to look good on offense.

97 - I understand your point - everything is harder when you don't have good teammates. But on the flip side, I don't think anyone was double teaming or loading up on Tyne. And Mooney gives his PG's freedom. I think a KA, Gilly, even SDJ would have scored a ton on last year's team. Tyne did not show much ability to score the ball consistently. And he is listed at 5'10, which I think is pretty generous - but that is normal. Will say I saw him play in person once his freshman year, and was impressed with his game. But so far has not been consistent - and my concern is even if he is better offensively, seems like Johnston will be a mainstay in the back court - and not sure who we will be able to stop.

Idk, there seem to be a bunch of people on this board who are penciling him into the starting 5. These are people who actually watch games closely and should know his stats.

I’m just saying that he’s had two years of really underperforming numbers at key metrics. It’s not likely to change dramatically with a different cast, he should be making others better, not the other way around.

Btw, I don’t dislike mikkel, he brings some good qualities but we need more out of a starting PG.

I would use the word “expected” vs “calls for”. I totally agree that if historical performance Tyne is the starting PG, then UR is doomed to repeat last season. This is why Tyne is the key to the season to me.

97’s statement is exactly what I would type. Well put 97.

Other items of interest to me in this thread:

Would hope he is either significantly better or supplanted as a starter by conference play
I hope the decision is made before conference play starts as I feel like another problem last year was that it took too long to determine what the best possible team was.

he should be making others better, not the other way around.
Definitely an attribute you want your PG to have and an area that Tyne has been deficient in by my observation. This is actually the main reason that I think Tyne’s best utilization is a change of pace type off the bench.

Completely agree. I said before my Mooney PG comp for Tyne is Khwan Fore. Hyper athletic, fast PG but a sizeable step below Mooney's A list of PG (KA, K-Zero, Ced, SDJ, Gilly). I put my supporting cast comment regarding last year in the same vein of he needs to show significant improvement this year for us to be really successful, possible but also wishful thinking.

My hope was that Johnston would be a starting PG but from reports it seems like he is penciling in at the 2. Mooney isn't starting a freshman, so by process of elimination that leaves Tyne. I think that is where we are at.
