Mooney--an under appreciated coach.

as for the URI coach begging for attendance, good for her. she should do that. but you can't tell people what they should be interested in. well you can I guess, but they don't have to listen.

I follow men's basketball. and I probably spend way too much time on it. I personally don't watch women's basketball. I also don't go to lacrosse, tennis, golf, soccer, field hockey, track & field, etc ...

everyone makes choices.
Sman, the point I’m trying to make is illustrating that there are coaches out there who want to elevate their programs. They want to have students at the game creating a great atmosphere. They want to win and are upset by losing. They hold themselves accountable and to a higher standard. Of course no one can make anyone do anything but at least they are trying to create a strong culture of basketball at their schools.

When have we ever seen this from our men’s coaching staff? Especially now where morale seems to be the lowest it’s been in awhile.

I think the magic number the admin is hoping Mooney reaches with wins this year is 18 +/- 1. That way it’s easier to claim we are “heading in the right direction”. Then add in the whole NIL narrative they’ve started introducing, the hope will be to convince donors to give more to continue this “progress”.
this is very on brand, as Moon's career indicates he will win 17 games on average, while losing 14 that same season.

the sample size is large enough to expect exactly that.

@sman - there are a lot of kids who go to games because it's a fun thing to do, not because they particularly love a sport. I drove to freaking Hofstra to watch a lax game last spring. I don't care about lacrosse, but I support UR sports. There were a TON of students there having a great time, most seemed excited to hang with friends and have a joint reason to go nuts in support of their school. That's what it's about. I posted this elsewhere but that should be the goal - build a consistently fun atmosphere for students regardless of if team is mediocre or good (if bad, well, get a new coach and get better, but I digress.) There should be like 6 student giveaways or fun/funny student involvement things every game (full court putt for tuition, etc.)

I mean the Winter Olympics are right now - it's entirely made up of sports no one follows, with notable exceptions.

At the time that we defeated them they were number 2 in the conference but sure let's discount that because they have "tough ones ahead" as long as it fits the agenda.
I was trying to see why they were a Q3 win instead of Q2. They were #75 before losing to us #86 after.

In the A10 they were:
Quad/wins/losses/remaining games
Q1/0/0/2
Q2/1/1/1
Q3/6/2/3 we are a Q3 loss for them
Q4/2/0/0

So they have played 2xQ2, 8xQ3, 2xQ4
They have left 2xQ1,1xQ2, 3xQ3
So I would say their last 6 games are tougher than their first 12.

K State is 1-10 in conference. a good portion of that has to fall on the man in charge.
I agree. Terrible look by him. Just say it was unacceptable and "we" will fix it. If multiple players aren't giving the effort you want, maybe it's you and not them. And, I doubt saying many won't be there next year helps things either. Whether you want them there or not, just a bad look.

I always have mixed feelings about on this stuff. So much depends on what the constitution of the team is and motivationally do they respond or shrink from comments like this.

If it’s not about motivation, which would be odd, then it’s really on the coach to recruit better.

Agreed - some kids can take criticism like this and be inspired by it, while others are not really built that way. It could also be the coach deflecting blame from his own failures.

In general I prefer my coach to keep comments like this in the practice facility or locker room, and publicly put it on himself.

Not a WBB enthusiast, but I believe this Texas coach is a well respected and successful one. I think he is simply observing that the players have changed now that they are being paid. Similar to how many NFL/MLB players seem to coast once they get the big contract. Motivation is a hard thing to quantify, but one thing is for certain is that a lack of motivation by a single player can quickly become contagious.

I saw Texas play us in the RC last year and Coach Schaefer is pretty old school. He wears the coat and tie or suit and his staff is dressed up as well. When the coat comes off he means business. The #4 Longhorns had just lost to #5 Vandy by 16 points. He also said he would wear it and it stops now! Sounds like he is motivating his team which also has Madison Booker one of the best players in the nation. If you have a chance to watch a Texas women’s volleyball or basketball game ….. tune in. They are packed and plenty of students in the seats.

If we lose again to VCU Saturday can we remove this topic? Cause I don’t like losing to the same team twice in the same year. And it seems to happen almost every year.

Never seen this from the man who’s been stuffing his pockets full of mo(o)ney. Instead he hides out at CCV and drinks Mai Tais watching his bank account to see another 2 million in his bank account
I don't think this is accurate. Our staff works hard. I agree results matter--we can debate what is realistic results, but I promise you CM and the staff care.

You originally said Richmond would finish 13–5 in conference. We are now in February and we are not going to finish anywhere close to that . It feels like after every brutal loss, the expectations keep getting lowered. “at least we have a program.”- this is what you said after a brutal loss "We arent loyola at least". And then you send in the attendance of Chicago state bball game and said at least we aren't them.

So what changed? Was the original 13–5 prediction unrealistic (we all knew that wasn’t going to happen), or are we just moving the goalposts each time the team struggles? It’s hard to have a real discussion about the program’s direction when you lower the standard each day

regarding Vic Schaefer, his 23-3 team is ranked #4 in the entire country. they've obviously worked hard to be where they are. you can be disappointed with the result of a game, but calling someone soft is a character assassination.

if I'm a player and I don't feel I gave it everything, then that's on me and this would be a wake up call.
if I'm a player and I feel I'm giving it everything I have and my coach calls me soft, it's not going to end well.

I am changing my tune a bit and acknowledge its been dissapointing. i think i posted that in one of my posts.

I stand by my 13-5 but acknowledge it was jaded by our poor non conference.

I just object to the fact that the staff doesn't care or that Mooney is checked out and sipping cocktails at the Country Club of VA. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

We already know what tomorrow is bringing…..
