Mooney--an under appreciated coach.

Zero chance Mooney gets canned this year. Maybe next year if we have yet another season like the past 2, there is a chance. But then again, we don't fire coaches under contact and we also know that coaches can't compete without at least a 4 year contract, so that is a tough merry go round to figure out.

The last two year extension when he already had THREE years left on his contract & also considering Moon's history is just U of R AD and admin incompetence.

Many of us said as much at that time, although surprisingly I recall there were some posters who agreed with it. I don't think anyone agrees with it now.

Go to the 15 minute mark and hear what Coach Martelli says about Coach Mooney. I know these aren't the brightest times but still pretty cool. Mad respect.
Again for a "Spider fan" you are really in touch with what all of the ins and outs of the VCU program. I'm sure Martelli likes Mooney a lot, he gets 2 auto wins a year over his rival and that helps his job security. Every VCU coach loves Mooney, he is there direct in town comparison and he makes them look really good.

I don’t mean this as a slight, as you’ve been respectful on here (even if I don’t agree with all of your takes). But you’re not helping yourself beat the VCU fan allegations by showing that you watched the VCU coach’s press conference

Of course he’s going to say nice things about CM. You don’t expect him to say the obvious that every VCU coach before Martelli has owned CM and see UR as a win 75 pct of the time?

I never said I don't follow VCU. I listen to a lot of A-10 coverage--including Mid Major Madness, A10 talk, and yes even some VCU press conferences.

Tonight I plan on watching and staying up for the BYU/Arizona game.

I think we've figured it out--I root for the Spiders, follow them closely--make 4-5 games a year--but I like watching and following the sport as a whole too.

Idk about you, but if I was a coach in a rivalry, I’d praise the other coach too if I knew it was an automatic 2 free wins each year. That’s why you only see vcu fans giving Mooney props on twitter. I wonder why…….

To go back to earlier points, I don’t see Mooney being let go after this year. Even with a suboptimal A10 record. I don’t know what stipulations Mooney has in his contract but that 2 year extension after 2024 handcuffed us. I don’t know what other factors Hardt had to consider with the extension but the buck stops with him at the end of the day. I’ve been very complimentary of Hardt and still stand by a lot of what I’ve said, but also agree with others that men’s basketball is ultimately what’ll define his tenure here and how he’ll
be looked upon by fans and that the recent contract extension was a bad decision.

Also, we use the word “fire” but I don’t think this administration will ever fire Mooney. It will be worded as mutually parting ways or something like that. It’s out of respect for his time here.

Also, Mooney clearly wants to have his recruiting/developing style to be more like the old days rather than changing his system/focusing on transfers. Right now he’s not doing either of those things well. I wonder if this wears on him some. You can tell he’s frustrated with current state of college athletics. It’s certainly not what it was 20 years ago.

did we just kick the can on our own pregame presser? I haven't been paying close attention this year admittedly but thought we still did em' weekly. Tho it won't surprise me when we kill it off permanently. snow day & VCU does it anyway. Bob Black can't clear his driveway & get into the Robins Center so I guess we're screwed. tale of 2 programs.

I don’t care about freaking VDU or Lee Art U. I despise them and loath them no
matter what our record is against them. The primary reason I want a change at coach,
is because Mooney shows little to no reaction to getting his clock cleaned by those jerks.
If Hardt cannot show some balls and at least put pressure on Mooney to beat them once a
year, then maybe we need a new AD.

Hardt and Mooney have reduced expectations so far it is unfathomable. And listening to Mooney he just seems defeated. Guess what every coach has the same playing field. in fact, the good mid majors are actually able to land top-rated guys more so than ever as the P5s are more concerned with the portal. Yet Mooney has continued to struggle. I'll give him AA but he is the only sure fire guy at this junction in last two classes. Oh well, will just hang on until 2027 for the next extension.

I agree with Mooney on one thing: I"m frustrated with the state of college athletics right now as well. But I'm not the head coach of supposedly the flagship sport of UR. If he's frustrated and can't adjust, he needs to go the route of Tony Bennett and resign.

Yes, runs through 2028–29 season. We didn't say how long the latest extension was, but JOC's sources said two years on top of the previous 2027 expiration.

No way he gets an extension after this year. But also don't see any way he gets fired. So unless there is a lower buyout figure, we're looking at having to buy out two years after next season as earliest possible opportunity.
If he isn’t gone ater this year (barring some miracle run), I think I’m out on season tickets. I just can’t do it.

No one will care within Athletics, it would entirely be about not watching us continue to be an uninspired program.

Btw, this thread is now out to 12 pages. It says so much about how strongly people feel that we are way past time for a change.

Change is good, especially when the status quo isn’t great.
You have to give some credit to spiderwill on that front. He will put some outlandish statement in here from time to time and all of us come together to put it too rest

The Mooney visibly frustrated about the state of college basketball is not a good look. He did sound defeated about the Rhode Island again. Also not a good look from your head coach. Where is the damn fire???

I personally think Mooney is addicted to his hefty paycheck and the accompanying lifestyle it affords him, otherwise I think he may go the way Tony Bennett and just retire.
