25-26 Roster Expectations

You can't play freely if you're worried about your first mistake putting you on the bench in front of your teammates and the entire coliseum crowd while your coach refuses to shake your hand and whispers some bullshit in your ear as you pass by.

if you're good enough you'll succeed. why is it AA can play freely? he should be the most worried ... a true freshman with the ball in his hands. I'm tired of excuses for poor play. maybe it's not a bad thing that Mooney holds fringe players accountable.

It jprobably ust comes down to talent and not system. Except for a few exceptions, if you are very good and can help us immediately, you will play here as a freshman. Like Tyler and Aiden recently have shown. JRob looks like an exception....a talented guy who for whatever reason didn't play as a freshman.

Looks like Will Harper has gotten only a couple of minutes of playing time in the first 3 games. He had a quick turnover today and was benched and did not come back in. Seems like he won’t be getting any significant time this season since Mooney is playing 11 guys in a game and he’s not one of them.

So question for my fellow posters on this forum given our on going redshirt debate. Knowing this, would it have been better to redshirt him this year so he can preserve his eligibility instead of losing it playing a few garbage time minutes this the year?

If NCAA allows 5 years for everyone, I think you dont redshirt anyone. I am more concerned with Bryson not playing and being seemingly behind Harper at this point.

As the season moves on you can bet that the rotation will not be 11.

Mooney mentioned both Bryson and Harper in the pre game presser and said they were both close. Of course, he put Harper in and then he played horribly in a matter of seconds. He didn’t pass the test and the game was too close to allow him to play through the mistakes. I am guessing that experience impacted Bryson to. Mooney is playing lots of guys already and so didn’t have a reason to go even deeper.

Also saw some classic Mooney reactions regarding Aiden’s passing mistake early in the first half (tried to feed I think Daughtry on a long breakaway) as well as a Johnson turnover on the inbounds late in 2nd. Pulled Aiden out and told him about it. Didn’t do anything to Johnson, but I think Mooney felt he didn’t have any options at that point.

yeah also noticed the Aiden "talk" and was concerned he suddenly wasn't going to be back in during 1st half .. but as I recall Tyne had a similar TO a bit later and Aiden was back in and clearly at this point with him basically being our leading scorer, have to think his minutes continue to increase althought doubt any change to the starting line-up until we lose a game.

too early to tell. from Mooney comments, I think Harper will get some more opportunities. he needs to take advantage of them quickly though. at come point Mooney will shorten the bench.

No, you don't redshirt Harper even if he doesn't play a lot of minutes this year. Why you ask, the answer is Bryson. He redshirted to develop and is still buried on the depth chart. I'm sure Bryson thought he would be playing good minutes this year with the redshirt but nope. And if a kid can't play at this level, we want him transferred out and replaced with a guy that can help us win, not eating up several years of a roster spot with no return.

Opposite could be said for JRob though. Can’t speak to whether he would’ve made an impact last year or not but he is making an impact now and I’m glad that he can be here for up to 3 more seasons as opposed to 2.

IMHO if given a chance to get comfortable with the speed of the game Bryson will make us proud he is a Spider.

Beagle said as much in a recent interview. How he was overthinking everything last year but now he has more fully learned our system. Beagle was rookie of the year in his previous conference, dude can play, but Mooney's system is so difficult to learn, it leads to players not playing and trying to think about where they need to be, what rotation is coming next, etc...

It is going to be interesting to see him and Walz this year. Walz is our all conference player but he is not a good match for Mooney's system, whereas Beagle is and Beagle has obviously improved in the offseason.
The question of course is, why is the system so hard to learn?

It probably isn't. It could just be Mooney's way of not being too critical of some players, which I get. Maybe many who "aren't ready" do not play much because they are really just not that good?

Maybe, I just think at some point you have to seriously question your system. But I’ve said this like 70 times already.
