2026 Portal Prospects

I get it. you're unhappy. but it was our best press conference. it was well done.
As if I am the only one unhappy? What is there to be happy about? AA returning is great, but my goodness, we return no one else of significance, we went 5-14 in the A-10 the past 2 seasons, we have a coach who acts like everything is just fine and business as usual, and an AD who releases a ridiculous statement saying Mooney will return without talking about expectations or anything else fans would want and expect to hear. So, sorry, it takes a lot more than another unemotional Mooney press conference to get me excited.

this was a shorter clip of the longer (very good) interview posted last week. he's talking about our existing players. there's a longer break this year before the portal opens. it gives them more time to talk to the current roster and work things out.
A very good interview that talks about our existing players? Serious question to you.....what on earth could we learn about our existing players that we do not already know? More time to talk to our current roster? About what? "Hey, guys, you can stay if you want, but we went 5-14 in the A-10 the last 2 years, so we are looking to replace you in the portal". How long does that take? But, seriously, why would we need any time to figure out we need a whole new roster minus AA if we want to be a top A-10 team?

Prob true but if we’re just going to replace them with equivalents who do cost us 100k, we are better off keeping the equivalents for a lower price.

Lots of ifs in this statement/thesis.
First of all, we shouldn't replace them with equivalents. That makes no sense at all. Secondly, if we miss on enough we need to complete the roster with close to equivalents, I would absolutely take a chance on newer "similar" guys because the new and unknowns might surprise us, and we already know what we have in the knowns.

I understand that, I’m just saying you probably can get a JRob or Harper at a more reasonable price than a portal rental.

All of this is ridiculous that we are even in this position.

did you watch the full press conference?

not saying he had mind blowing answers, but it was a good press conference. probably the best I remember us having. he was asked good questions and he gave thoughtful answers.

no answers that change the fact we went 5-13 and 5-13 of course. and nothing that changes where we are as a roster. but it's worth a watch.

All Moon knows is business as usual - rigid, lack of adjustments, predictable. That’s why we’ve only had 3 NCAA’s in 21 years and owned by VCU amongst other horrible stats. If anyone is expecting something different, than hope that the next 3 years pass quickly and if there is enough fortitude to replace him.

you can't attract a sack of potatoes in the portal for under $100k these day, so I'd rather keep our guys if even as depth pieces than try to replace everyone.
I'm fine with keeping a few of them if we are paying them peanuts but again I don't think any of our players outside of Daughtry and drawing anything significant interest in the portal and in the NIL market, so lets not pay them a penny more than they a worth.

God help us if we pull end up paying a JRob or Harper level player in the portal significant dollars. Though Mooney did that this year with Thomas, last year with GW3 and BA. We haven't had a hit in the portal since Jordan King, he just burned through a lot of donor and university $$$ on players he thought were good but ended up not being the opposite.

So if my math is correct then we should have now 4 open spots for next season. Also wouldn’t be surprise to see 1-3 more transfers leaving our program.

So with 4-7 open spots we are going to need to have a success rate of 2-3 players to be a good team next year. I don’t necessarily mean they have to be Jordan King level good. He was co-A10 POY, but has to be someone who can contribute to this team. Bigelow, Quinn were those kinds of guys. Even Harris with his one year here from Western Carolina played his role very well.

Looks like AA and Deuce have the PG spot locked up for us next year. Next priority is getting a really good player to play the 5 for us. The guy from Boston University who is 7’ would be an excellent fit in my opinion. If I remember correctly was 2nd team Patriot League and all defensive team.

Basically looks and sounds like Mooney is doing very little so far. While he is sitting on his hands for the facetious portal opening, a lot of teams will be done. We will be chasing the the low level athelete that put up 12 ppg at low major.

Unless it’s grad transfers, I don’t think staff is allowed to contact recruits until the portal officially opens April 7th. At least officially. Who knows what’s going on behind the scenes with agents texting. I imagine we will get a lot of X player is receiving interest from “Y” schools and Richmond being on the list once the portal officially opens. Last year seemed like we expressed interest in half the portal.

Portal is also open for guys who have had a head coaching change. After new coach is hired, you have to wait five days (a buffer for opportunity to meet with the new coach), and then you have 15 days to enter the portal. (That's of course separate from the regular portal entry window that these guys can still use.)

See Lundblade from Belmont who has already committed to Tennessee.

8 new players for next year. 7 returners, including 2 with no experience and 1 walk-on, and one wildcard on the roster.

Plus a statement by Mooney that last year’s Summer practice plan was too intense.

Looking forward to the OOC release.
