Rotation and Minutes

I mean, we have 11 players averaging over 12 minutes a game. There are only so many minutes to go around. I think this is one of the only years you can’t really fault Mooney for not finding playing time.
I find it hard to believe as we move several games into A10 play that 11 players will continue to avg over 12 mins per game. Am I the only one who thinks Mooney will revert closer to norm? I’m not sure the argument of balanced depth sticks.

As far as JRob goes, he’s shown me enough to think that he deserves some of the minutes that others are getting. I think we get more bang for the buck with him on the court.

You know I know most of us after 20 years can read Mooney like a book. But with this depth, there is little
difference from 11 to 1. If he continues to want to play faster pace, then the bench will be needed to keep fresh.
I think this might be an unique year as far as the number of players who play. Foul trouble of course will dictate a
lot of this.

I do agree that the rotation shortens quite a bit in A10 play. I just hope Mooney plays the most effective guys.
I just hope that when the rotation shortens:

More AA: Less Johnston (I thought he was our best transfer but to me has been largely disappointing)
More Robinson: Less AP (agree that AP is better on defense and brings energy, but Robinson has more upside, freshman vs senior)
More Beagle: Less Walz (Beagle is such a better fit for our offense)
More Daughtry (period): He is just too dynamic of an offensive player

I do realize that more of these guys probably makes us slightly worse on defense though.

Found the new board. I would like to see extended minutes of

AA
David Thomas
Lopez
Daughtry
Beagle

Together. I like Thomas as a bigger guard who looks like a capable defender. and can shoot the 3 some. AA can make enough plays and you have Lopez and daughtry who can go get a bucket

I like that lineup a lot. I might stick with Johnston over Thomas for now, so we can see if Johnston can turn things around and be more of a factor for us. I would be fine with Walz or Beagle starting. Then, AP, Thomas, Tyne and Walz/Beagle would make my top 9. Also okay with giving JRob and Tanner minutes.

Glad you found the board! And of Course Dogspider would definitely be in favor of more Beagle...

Maybe Johnston is ok?

Well, one trend that seems to be persisting, Mooney's HS recruits are not excelling, and not developing.

Tanner looks good against inferior competition, but not so much when it steps up. Not seeing anything in the way of progress from Walz. Still hopeful for Jrob, but not a ton of production yet. And it feels like Bryson is on the double red shirt plan.

Argabright is legit, and if he is the next big little guard, that could carry Mooney another 4 years.

You really don't see any development in Walz? That can't be true.

Hate to harp on this, but have you watched him this season? Regression if you ask me. It's to the point that everytime he has the ball I am fearing a turnover. And last night he was getting bullied. Go watch the tape of the game. He has numbers against really bad teams so far. I get we are a high post center offense. BUT, its not mutually exclusive to having a single post move. Look at TJ. Look at Quinn. Every time Walz starts backing down he gets stopped and in an awkward position. He does make a few nice passes per game, but is looking to pass 95% of the time, and those have been offset by his really poor passes.
Now hopefully I get proven wrong going forward. I would LOVE that, because we can really use him to be a threat.

I welcome the debate. He's not ever going to be a back to the basket scorer. That's not his bailiwick, and I'm OK with that. I'm fine with him being a good mid-range and top of the key shooter, since that's where he gets the ball a lot. If your only metric for development is "does he have a Rick Edwards hook shot?" then yes, you're gonna be disappointed. I certainly see development over his career, and for this year, I think his rebounding is better.

Passing wise, he's leading the team in assists, and has a 1.6/1 A/TO ratio, which is pretty damn good. His passing has certainly not been "offset by his really poor passes."

I think Beagle would get exposed with too many more minutes defensively. And he's definitely a better inside post offensive player, but an inferior shooter, and so I didn't like what our offense looked like with Belmont's big man sagging in the lane off of him.

To me, it's more of an agressiveness conversation vs. a development conversation. Like you mentioned, Walz is looking to pass 95% of the time and the only time he really looks for his shot is on the top of the key three that he takes once or twice a game. He's a good passer, but he's so tuned in on trying to find the perfect pass that he never looks to make a move towards the basket on his own. You can almost see him thinking through every decision he makes on the offensive end instead of reacting instinctively, which to me is the biggest difference between him and TJ/Grant/Neal. While I love the start to the season, we're going to need him to be an offensive threat to be a factor in A10 play. Don't think our guard play can carry us every night.

Agree that was not a great look from Beagle, with his man dropping back 10 feet into the paint. Back to Walz, I don't care that he doesn't have a hook shot, it's more that every other center we have had could at least make some moves and score - Golden/Quinn/TJ etc etc. Walz doesnt seem to have developed one move. And no his midrange game is non existent too. He either swishes or airballs the three pointer, if he can continue to shoot 40% from three I am ok with the airballs. I am not going to go back and watch tape, but would bet there are at least 3 to 4 a game where he forces a pass and either A) gets overlooked as turnover, or B) the guy trying to corral it gets the turnover. In my book he caused the turnover.
