Replacements

I like Carlin as well. But never been the head coach anywhere. Would I rather give him a shot for the next three years instead of Mooney? 100 percent. But not the profile I am looking for here. Want a proven HC at lower levels looking for opportunity to move up and do it at high mid major level.

Did we commit major ncaa infractions under Tarrant Dooley Beilein Ole Jer or is Mooney the only one?

Answer: Mooney is the only one
Gkiller, I'll have you know the rule book is really large. And even though this is a new rule, Moon did not have time (getting in at 8AM eats up your time) to have this disseminated to the entire coaching staff.

23, I'm going to give u a little bite because why not. Someone give me a sign I need to do more work on this please, anything!

Now these r two names that have been on the spreadsheet but very relevant still. I will say like 23 I'm traditionally a hire a sitting HC up & comer from a lower level guy. But there are exceptions. Here is 1 in the category and 1 outside.

Russ Turner - UC Irvine. not an "up & comer" bc quite experienced and 55 but lower levl succesful HC. from Tony Shaver hampden sydney tree like Odom & Aldrich (where is 21 year Moon coaching tree?). Heck bring Shaver in as assistant. Turner is a consisent winner. It's good ball out West. Some give him a bad rep because he's tough, but we need that. and because he called opponent with last name of King, Queen instead. a joke and big f'ing deal anyway. He wants to get back to East Coast roots.

Chris Fleming - yes OUR Chris Fleming. Kennt Atkinson is pipe dream but a dream I say we are still entitled to have! Fleming is like the backup pick to Kenny. & wWith Fleming many ppl didn't think we'd get from NBA either after a well regarded & long international and NBA coaching career. However what many don't know is he's now an NCAA coach. Assistant with Alabama. I think it shows he's more than willing to take U of R. And frankly I think his varied background helps and I respct Oats at Bama and working under him in NCAA is beneficial. If we go asst. root or ties to UR (sorry I don't want a former Moon player they have to wait at least 1 cycle past) Fleming is a real consideration imo.

I like.

Turner, on the surface not super crazy about. But all the guy does is win. Former teammate of Curtis Blair in HS, and one time opponent of spider23 for a half a scrimmage in a preseason jamboree :):) I do think he is a good coach, and I do think he would be energized for a good 5 year run to come back to Virginia. I could get behind this. I recall him openly campainging for the VCU job one time it was open. Would be a solid hire.

Fleming - like you note, not the pattern identified - but again I like it. He has literally been around the world playing and coahing hoops. Did not realize he was at Alabama now, but just like Oats, he likes some offense. I think before the NBA he was a very succesfull coach in a European league? I think he has a lot of varied background and exposure - and would also be energized by being back - I think. He was our Uconn to Richmond transfer before AP - he could shoot a bit better.

Good stuff GK.

for whatever reason, GK's post about the text infraction led me to directly remember why I quit the board last year - I think it was bc of the insinuation that Moon doesn't know the NCAA rules and in the game I remembered, he didn't know the actual game rules.

Speaking of course about the Rhode Island debacle where our coaches didn't know the rule about dead ball substitutions even though it had already happened once in that game, so the guy with 30 points sat on the sidelines for the key offensive possession of the game.

idk why I do this self loathing process because when i look at past names on GK spreadsheet it reminds me of good coaches we could have had here but we let get hired elsewhere and/or move up bc we're so satisfied with the status quo.

But here are 2 names for you *23* and others I've had on my list to watch as true up & comers and I still like a lot. Btw there are lot of good Texas and west coast guys too not sure I see Hardt and crew spreading their wings so to speak like that even tho it's smart. Of course in 2029 these guys might be in the SEC or ACC.

I'd definitely like to see 1 or both with NCAAs (it's a factor just smaller) we know that's hard coming from these low level leagues so I don't dismiss but look beyond

1. Brooks Savage - ETSU coach. 3rd year. Progressively getting better. Started as student manager under Buzz Petersen & Pearl at TN. Those student managers r good, many examples. Then with Pearl as GA and moved upward with good asst experience. Only 40. If he goes to NCAA this year he will be HOT. Time to strike is now. Imagine going from a Mooney to a Savage!

2. Richie Riley - two tough jobs at Nichols and South Alabama and still has won at better clip than Mooney. Still only 43. Good rep, southern boy but would fit at UR. has the look, no NCAAs otherwise would be hotter. More of a concern than Savage bc of length of time as HC.

Moonman went 18-12 at AFA and gtfo. I'm leery of academy coaches now.

also, check off another team we can't play OOC because there are no excuses if we lose to a team with no NIL, therefore will never be scheduled.

Pretty sure that AFA went to NCAA year before under previous HC, and returned everyone. Could be wrong but that is my recollection.

AFA 2004 22-5, 12-2 in MWC. Utah got AQ. BYU & AFA got at large.

Returned 3 starters and 6th man in 2005. If I’m reading correctly.

2005 18-11, 9-5 and KenPom 44(!)
17-11 D1

But swept BYU, Split with NM & UNLV, took 2 of 3 from SDSU

Interesting schedule KenPom 22 neutral, 20,31,90 home & away, 27,36,78,98 away. 11 vs Top 100…

OOC was Marquette, Georgia Tech, Iowa, St Mary’s, even Bruce Pearl 26-6 Milwaukee…

With a starting lineup of 6’2”, 6’3”, 6’4”, 6’6”, 6’8”…

I keep finding interesting things about that season.
