Mooney--an under appreciated coach.

Didn’t know where to put this. So placing here. Bobby Hurley out at Ariz St after 11 up and down seasons. Sound familiar in 21 seasons. Hurley 3 NCAA appearances in 11 years vs Mooney 3 in 21 years and counting.
Seeing Hurley mentioned for URI job - which not sure is officially open yet?

man, perception changed quickly. Schmidt was boy-wonder not long ago.
I still like him. don't know how much NIL the amazing Woj raised, but imo Schmidt has done well considering what he was selling.
Yep he was boy wonder in 20-21 when went to NCAA's.

Since then 44-45 in the A10. I think VT actually pointed this out often when we hyped Schmidt on this board. Kind of like the coaching fraternity bro's on the broadcasts that only highlight the longevity/accumulation statst Mooney has put up, ignoring the horrific ones.

One retread (Archie) to another (B. Hurley) would be classic A10 hiring. A10 schools seem to love coaches past their prime. Frank the Tank at UMass before they left being a great recent example, Archie another.

Archie and Hurley careers are similar - do well at non power conf. jobs, bomb out at power conf jobs. Archie then has continued to bomb out at URI and my guess is B. Hurley will do likewise. Weird how career trajectories often can't be reversed once things start to turn against a coach. Anthony Grant has not covered himself in glory at Dayton either as a 2nd time around guy.

A. Grant in 3 years at VCU - 3 reg. season titles, 2 NCAAs.
A. Grant at 15 years at Alabama/Dayton - 1 reg. season title, 2 NCAAs.

Although Schmidt and Mooney have very similar winning percentage, I think Schmidt is given credit around the A10 for his winning percentage in games where that one game matters.

Moon and Schmidt

He said a month ago that SLU would need to increase its revenue sharing money for players in order to keep all or most of this year’s underclassmen for the 2026-27 season. SLU is believed to have spent between $3 and $3.5 million on this season’s roster, below several programs in the A-10.

He also said he was looking for more money for his assistant coaches and other upgrades in the program.

Now a 4 point game. SLU really needs to win IMO, they don't have the best metrics and resting their players in a blowout reg. season loss should be considered just as any other game is IMO, since it was a voluntary thing.
