Mooney--an under appreciated coach.

One thing i'll point out, did you see the (it was real well done) piece CBS did on Coach Telli's (Martelli) son and Mooney's son playing together at Collegiate. First props to both kids--came across as very likeable and humble.

I don't think the timing is accidental-i think it humanizes Coach and makes it harder to make a tough decision.

My aunt who is a casual sports fan asked me if I saw it and then (honest to god) said how classy both Martelli and Mooney are. FWIW
That's the bottom rung of the ladder, not the top.

Mooney has been living on Class for a long time, let it go.

I'm a pretty classy guy myself (so says my wife anyway) buy I can't coach basketball either.

By the way Fan1, you are at the top of the class (pun intended) when it comes to class on this board. So thanks...
Thank you, Rick, your service career earned you a ton of credibility.

Yep the "nice guy" thing is just another smoke screen. So what. There are a ton of nicer guys coaching d2 and d3 for 50k to 150k per year. u shouldn't be getting 1.5 million for nice guy. This is a dumb narrative as it relates to whether he should be canned or not. I'd say 98% of d1 colleges have kids that play HS hoops. Wow!

I’ve heard from inside sources that Mooney actually isn’t even a nice guy. Publicly, he appears that way, but to staff, players, and people that deal with him professionally, I’ve heard he is more of an ***hole

No one is going to set the university on fire if CM gets let go/retires. The administration knows what they have, they just need to have the gumption to make a move.

more likely Schmidt joins as an assistant and brings the vaunted defense that allowed UR to carve his team up twice this season. He's another .550 type HC so they can talk all day about how hard things are.

also, staying on Bona for a moment, after seeing how a high profile GM came in and cleared out a longtime coach after only 1 season, probably no way Moon goes for any GM who is not under the triumverate thumb.

Just because I'm thinking about it... The closest current coach to Mooney in terms of longevity, record and conference level is Ben Jacobsen at Northern Iowa. This is his 20th season there. He got a 10-year extension in 2010 after back-to-back tourney runs. Then no tourney for four years, but back-to-back NCAAs again in 2015 and 2016. Then a decade without an appearance until now, when they won their conference tourney as the 6-seed this weekend.

But in the past decade, at least Jacobsen finished first twice, third twice and fourth once in conference play and never was worse than 7-11 in conference. And his overall career winning percentage us just shy of 61%.

Mooney and Jacobsen are good friends, as has been reported numerous times. It's one reason we played them three or four times. But I guess we can't do that any more!
