Mooney--an under appreciated coach.

Id argue VCU and Richmond both had their breakout years in 2011. One program continued to be successful and one choose to be in mediocrity. Academics cannot be an excuse for a coach who is making more than $1M and has been for 10 plus years now. You could also argue Davidson has been more competitive than us in the last decade. And Duquesne did the same thing we did (make a miracle run in the a10) the difference is their coach knew that was the peak of his career (unlike ours)
I agree 100 percent. The amount that Mooney makes a year is totally ridiculous. Yet we won’t smell the NCAA tournament again this year.

Hi everyone,

I'm a first time poster but long time reader to the boards. My first Spider memory was going in 1997 to the Richmond UNC game at the Robbins Center when i was like 10. While I live up in Fairfax now, I try to make as many spiders games as I can. Anyway, finally had to get an account and register seeing some of the feedback on the Charleston Southern thread about Mooney. I don't think people appreciate him enough.

  1. We went to NCAA 3 years ago and won a game against a Power 5 team that had just won big 10 tournament
  2. The next year we were conference champions in the regular season. While it was disappointing to bow out against St. Joe's in A10 tournament it was a solid year.
  3. We consistently lead the country in FT % and many times are in top 15 in 3 point percentage.
  4. He is very classy and nice and we graduate our players. In short a great representer of our university.
I decided to do some research and see if I was off base but get this. He has a higher winning percentage than all but 2 Richmond coaches. He has a higher percentage than Wainwright, Bill Dooley, Lou Goetz, Carol Slone, Lewis Mills, Lester Hooker and even Malcom Pitt. Facts don't lie. I think fans have too high expectations. Little ole Richmond isn't going to go to the sweet 16 every year. But do we have a better coach than say Davidson, St Joe, or Loyola Chicago--unequivocally!! Enjoy what you have while you have it spider fans!!
Y'all, we devoted 6 pages thus far to this quite obvious troll post from a likely VCU fan.

I mean let's examine:
  1. "Little Ole Richmond" What Richmond fan refers to us like this, none but VCU fans do
  2. He spelled Robins Center wrong. Either he works in our ticketing or marketing department but or he is a VCU fan.
  3. He apparently doesn't live in Richmond but yet happens to be in Richmond this past week and instead of going to see his school at home, instead goes to see VCU play, because it is a more electric atmosphere
  4. Rehashes the Charlotte game from a decade plus ago as some type of turning point for Mooney, not being supported by admin
  5. He doesn't even know the season we went to NCAA and won the A-10
  6. A great "representer of our university". You can literally pull this shit directly from any multitude of Ramnation posts.
I could go on but everything this guy posted is something that either a google search would be known by some VCU fan that regularly posts on their board. And yet, we gave this guy 6 pages of run. Good job, "Spiderwill" that was a pretty nice troll job you did on us, but now be gone.

I think you’re right. He also posted after our poor performance against GW to not over react to one game, which I thought was a strange thing to say after we just had a Q4 home loss to Charleston Southern the game before. Clearly not someone who is paying close enough attention to Spider Hoops.

Perhaps he will post a photo from the Fordham game since he is going.

Haha, we must have similar x algorithm sman. Saw that one too. Very funny. Recently there was one of actual footage from a game or practice. Would not work today, but there are similar guys (Hurley and a few others) that are similar.

We were told to be careful what we wished for by the way
Yes and unfortunately its probably a damned if you do side too. Because despite the fact that he had a good hire on the women's side , nothing on the men's side tells me he Hardt would do well on men's side. Probably going to be a point in 6 years where we have folks posting letters online like St. Joe's. That program is a dumpster fire but came out and slapped us first half because we were fat and happy apparently.

Why don’t our bigs ever try driving to the hoop when they are unguarded on the perimeter? Why do we leave every corner 3 wide open? A competent coach would see these problems we have every year and do something to address them

Right, the other game, the overplayed Walz on the perimeter and he drove it down the lane. This game both he and Beagle had defense overplayed and actually on the wrong side and both just looked for pass out to perimeter. Seems like our offense often coaches the instinct to make basic ball play out of guys.

It's just sad to see what has happened to Richmond basketball. I remember being a young kid watching them go to a sweet sixteen. Watching that team go on that run made me fall in love with basketball. I just can't even imagine a Mooney team now every being close to that level of that team.
Then you were all grown up when we beat Iowa in the NCAA's in Buffalo or ran rough shot around the A-10 a few years later and won the A-10 regular season--which included a win over VCU! I was at that VCU game, place was bananas, that was just a few years ago.

Keep the faith--better days are ahead.
