Game Thread - vs. Nebraska in NCAA play-in game - Wed 3/18 ESPN2 in Durham at Cameron

I think this game verifies some things we maybe should have seen all year. In our games against good teams - - Texas, TCU, Fairfield, GMU, URI and now Nebraska - - we really weren't very good and frequently not very competitive.

One thing is I think we are so dependent on Maggie that our whole offense runs slower and less efficiently. We are a lot of dribble/drive and less ball movement than in the past. And thats really not this groups best skills. Forcing Ally and others (even Maggie) to have to create in isolation isn't a great strength for us. We have some talent after the big 3, but its not as complementary as past group role players.

I think we will obviously look a lot different next year but hopefully we return to the more ball movement offense and less ISO (and I think we will have too). We are going to have to go from winning as an offensive team to winning as a defensive team! I think we have some people for this but it begs the question hpw are we going to score?

We never replaced an equivalent Budnik or Hill from last year’s graduating class. It showed tonight and throughout the season.

I think he stays.
His market value has ascended to its highest high.

Next year the cupboard is bare. There ain’t no Doogan or Ullstrom on the foreseeable future horizon.A 5 year deal of seven digits awaits him if he departs to P4 now.

He can become a lifer like Mooney if he decides to stay.Thats the more comfortable alternative.

You think Richmond can offer him close to a 7 figure annual salary?

JOC asked Roussell directly about offseason openings in postgame. Obviously no way he would tip his hand about potentially leaving, but he had nothing but gushing words about UR, Hallock, Hardt, the fans, and everything else.

And Maggie with some perspective on why she stayed for her final year.

Would certainly set a very standard for A10 coaches.
Weirdly enough, for as much as I’ve complained about our admin the past few months, I genuinely think they know basketball is important here will try and give him a very enticing package to say. Whether that’ll be enough to convince him to stay, I don’t know. But little things like seeing Hallock on tv at the games and comments Roussell has made about being well supported by the university gives me promise.

The difference between Roussell and Mooney is that Mooney seems content and complacent with where he is. Roussell seems like someone who is hungry and strives for more and to be the best he can be. UR can certainly make as compelling of reasons for him to stay but the reality is the Big 10 is one of the highest if not the best conference in the country. If he wants that challenge, there’s nothing we can ultimately do to stop that. There’s a lot of reasons to love and stay at UR and the A10 is a very respectable conference that plays high level basketball too, albeit not at the Big 10 level of course. If we do make that kind of financial statement and commitment to him, it will say a lot about our aspirations as a program and if he chooses to stay here, it will say a lot more.

EDIT: to your point about NIL, I think it’s a discussion of Roussell. He seems driven to succeed. He should obviously get a raise but if for him he’d like to see a boost in the NIL we give, then by all means that we should prioritize. Roussell is the captain of this ship.

I don’t know Roussell’s true intentions, but man that answer he gave to JOC’s questions seemed genuine and heartfelt and as perfect of a response we’d want to hear as Richmond fans. I think he does appreciate how special Richmond is and knows that he has the administration, fan, and community’s unconditional support. Coach is right, grass isn’t always greener. There are a lot of things to love about our school and ability to play a high level of basketball.

Please admin do one thing right with our basketball programs and pay this man and his staff what they deserve with both salary and NIL resources.

Northwestern, Penn State, Pitt or BC are not better jobs. Higher profile maybe, definitely more money but they are the dregs of power conferences.

I think our hope is that he's McKillop and we are Davidson and Maggie is his Steph Curry and we all live happily ever after until he retires in 20 years!

Check that - - Maggie plays 10 years in WNBA, comes back here as an assistant for 3-4 years and then takes over for retiring Roussell. So make that 14 more years before he retires - - - but we all live happily ever after til Maggie retires in 43 years!

Nebraska loses to Baylor 67–62. Huskers had a 9-point lead early in the fourth quarter and gave it away with terrible ball handling the rest of the game.
