Game Thread - @ SLU 4pm Sat 1/17 CBS Sports Network

I doubt we get blown out. Last time that happened was the GW game. We're too well coached and typically show up in big games (other than VCU) not calling a win--but i think we'll all be proud when the horn sounds Saturday at 6.
I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ll let the “well-coached” thing slide, but I violently disagree. Beyond that, we have a litany of blowouts, particularly in big games, so whatever narrative you’re concocting there is absurd. That’s just some rose colored glasses I’m afraid.

And we got blown out. So, yeah.

As a recap, from the very first offensive possession, UR had no real plan of how to attack a disciplined, good defense. Just shoot long contested jumpers that they missed. Then the unforced turnovers started, runouts started, and SLU 3s and UR had exactly zero response or plan of how to change the game. None. Just keep running the exact same sets.

I don't recall a set that led to an easy hoop or a wide open 3. Meanwhile on the other end, I saw lots of SLU sets doing exactly that, creating open looks or exploiting horrific defensive mismatches that UR decided to switch into. Early on they clearly had identified that skip passes would find open shooters as UR sagged into the lane with defenders.

Said it during Fordham game, but I see more from Harper than I have in some others who get more significant PT ahead of him. Robinson likewise brings some okay things that I'd like to see if he can develop. Both have flaws at present but both are also freshmen, not juniors or seniors. I don't see that the guys ahead of them are better in any significant way. Just older and more ingrained with the coach.

Somewhere a couple of weeks ago, I advocating that playing time from here on out should be based on how much time you have left in college. I got shouted down in favor of the "best 5 play" approach - - to which I asked then and still do - - do we have any idea who the best 5 are?

Johnston had zero points (and not much else) for 2 straight games, then arose from the dead to have a few solid games before today's 1-10 (and 1 whole assist) game. I just don't need to see any more of that playing over Harper or really anyone other than Tyne. Harper, Argabright, J Rob get all the minutes they can handle the rest of the way (and that should be 100+ a game between them). McGlothlin gets a chance. Thomas and Daughtry (juniors and newer) get some bench minutes. Walz and Beagle have to keep their roles just to be fair to the others that will play that we have a big out there. AP and Tyne are zero. Johnston and Lopez get whatever might be left which won't be that much.

Could you recommend me the the dispensary you go too? Seems like I could use some of that stuff

14-7 when he sat Aiden with 2 fouls. Didn't put him back in until it was 27-10. Un freaking believable. You get 5 fouls!!!!! And, guards can protect themselves from fouling much easier than bigs can. Inexcusable for one of our best players to only play 6 1st half minutes because he has 2 fouls.
This is a pattern, you know this.

His speed to adapt can only be measured by carbon dating. I didn’t even watch the game but can more or less tell what happened.

Johnston, Daughtry, Lopez are gunners who seem to play best in a fast paced system that prioritizes tempo, pushing the ball and scoring in transition/secondary transition. All are minus defenders. Daughtry has a massive turnover problem in the half court. But UR has regressed from OOC where they played very fast, to a traditional Moonball halfcourt team that only plays in transition against sloppy opponents.

Moon cannot bring himself to simply scrap his beloved offense in favor of something that fits the skillset of these guys plus others like Aiden who would thrive in it. So the system guys get tons of run. It's frustrating watching the weave and zero points for the first 3 minutes of a game like today, because this team has some very good shooters and other guys who can score regularly.

Lopez and Johnston are still among UR's best players, btw. Daughtry is a bucket on offense when being utilized correctly and not placed in a corner and then trying to create off the dribble from 22 feet out. He's been pretty bad a few games though, and not being put in a position to succeed on offense now that UR doesn't run out, and is trying to play precision perfect Moonball. He'll never be a fit in that IMO.

On defense, Aiden is a good defender, but very slight. After that, it's a succession of a couple average defenders and a slew of poor to very poor defenders.

Stay leafy.

St. Louis shot the lights out. Richmond shot like the lights were out.
So far looks like George Mason and St. Louis are way ahead of everyone else. Has Dayton played anyone yet???

The plus 14.5 line was a sucker bet. Blown out by GW and St L. Pattern for Moon to digest. Will he change anything in his philosophy or style…NO. Wishful thinking.

Avila should send CM a thank you note for the switching defense.
I don’t consider GW a blowout though they scored 90+, we also scored 80+. This game was most definitely
an old fashioned fanny whipping by a belt with metal studs.

So I didn’t get to watch this game which sounds like a gift knowing what transpired.

So everything I’m about to say is based on the box score, and what little I’ve read here.

4pts and 8 rebs out of our two centers combined is comically bad. You have to actively try not to score to generate 4pts.

So I get that argabrights minutes were foul-limited, but I do not understand the reliance on Tyne. He’s not a PG in our system and is too poor a shooter and too ineffective a driver to be a good 2-guard. He’s an ok on-ball defender I guess? But just gets rinsed in our defensive system the moment we switch.

Speaking of defense, wtf. Sounds like the switching man is fully entrenched again. Stop the madness. Is anyone on that coaching staff willing to grow a pair and tell CM to adapt?

Glad for Harper, I’d love to see more of him. Give me less AP, I just don’t think he adds enough on D to warrant stifling the development of the younger guys.

Perhaps there will be a wake up call, but it’s unlikely.

No, the lack of real assistant coaches has been a problem for years. All Mooney robots. Boyden seemed ti come in with some energy and ideas but we seem to be fully entrenched in mooneyball again.

I dunno. We lost by 14 in our building, and that’s close enough to label as a “blowout” in my mind. Also, I was at that game, and my eyes tell me GW is on a different level than us (at least for that night) and good enough to label our loss as blowout. But in practicality, the labeling doesn’t matter. Could be blowout, beat down, smack down, etc. GW beat us badly, and our defense was AWOL. The first but not the last of that scenario this season.

In time they all adapt. Your “fully entrenched” is accurate and perfect.

I watched until we sat Aiden at 14-7. It was already a painful watch with the constant switching and mismatches, but I knew it would only get worse. So, I just randomly checked the score and box score online the rest of the half because I knew we were done. Frustrating knowing we would never even have a chance to come back, but it was obvious.

You lasted longer than me. I did the same but I think the score was 11-2.
