Game Thread - Southern Virginia (D3) @ RC - Wed 11/5 7pm - ESPN+

agreed that we can't take much from this game. it's basically another scrimmage, with the benefit of getting everyone on the floor in a game that "counts".

1) defense worked hard, though no idea if effective against a D1 team. SV certainly couldn't handle it. Saturday will show us much more.
2) the press ... fine that we got to work on it. hate that we had to resort to it against a team like this. our halfcourt offense was so bad that we had to press to create anything.
3) could have just fed Walz, Beagle, Daughtry, etc inside all night, but what would be the point.
4) as many have pointed out, AA is the real deal. moves a lot like a freshman Gilly, and creates like him. not just a scorer. I'm one of the few remaining believers in Tyne, but while I think Tyne will score more this year he's not the creator that AA will be. Tyne's a small 2-guard more than a true PG. I'll give Johnston more time to show what he is, but I could see a backcourt of AA and Tyne.
5) need more time from Lopez and Thomas and Johnston to formulate an opinion.
6) Beagle is very good. with Walz' ability to shoot the 3, you could absollutely play them together. but we won't.
7) I was ready to annoint McG after that 1st three, then he missed the next 2. need to see more, but I'm leaning towards believing. that's a good looking stroke.
8) JRob is for real. he will make things happen. not a shooter but we assumed that. he's got to get substantial playing time at the 4. I'd like an even split with him and Daughtry.
9) so I think we're strong at the 5 and will be strong at the 4 once Mooney scraps this starting lineup. our guards should be good. it'll be most interesting to see what shakes out at the 3 between Tanner, AP, AJ and McG. could even play Daughtry there when we realize JRob needs more playing time. I assume it's Tanner's job to lose.

Some thoughts after last night...agreed with everyone that you can't really take away too much from a D3 opponent, but a handful of things stuck out to me:

- Tyne shot the ball pretty well last night, but big issue for me is 0 assists in 17 minutes...compare that to Argabright with 3 in the same amount of PT. He's basically a 5'10 shooting guard, which means he's really going to have to improve his shooting efficiency to take that jump we're all hoping for.

- Walz made his jumpers and rebounded well, but still looked too passive for my liking. I realize that the post-up is effectively dead in modern basketball, but all of our great centers could get an easy bucket down low if we needed one. Walz hasn't shown the same ability to do that consistently.

- Tanner playing the most minutes of everyone is very surprising...put up decent stats but had a few ugly misses from 3. I didn't really see much difference from last year that would warrant a starting spot...think this will be worth monitoring as games go by.

- Going to write this game off for Johnston and Lopez...neither seemed to really get into the flow of the game for different reasons. I expect both to make much more of an impact going forward. Lopez has an ugly release but seems like it should fall if he has space.

- It's one game, but Argabright looked amazing for a true freshman. He was quick, decisive, and fearless. Should be the first guard off the bench and could fight for a starting role if he keeps this up.

- J-Rob is the type of athlete we badly need...can't wait to see what he can do as he gets more comfortable. Almost had two huge dunks. He's such a quick leaper.

- Daughtry still seemed like he's working into game shape, but looked smooth and in-control. Excited to see what he can contribute as he gets more into game speed and shape.

- Really nice performance from Beagle. I was one of the people who expected him to push Walz for minutes last year, but never worked out that way. It would be GREAT for us if he can be an above-average A10 big, even if coming off the bench.

- AP....yikes. Can't throw it in the ocean. He crashes the boards hard but that's all he gives you right now.

- Thomas didn't really stand out any way... he went left so much I thought he was left handed until he took his first jumper.

Posted in another thread, but I think this gives you enough to cut the rotation down to 10 guys in more competitive games.

Seconded on all of this. We saw the same things. AP needs to attend a women's team practice to watch how they set up for their three point shots.

I was at the game, and I’m in agreement with everything you posted. Good stuff.

I was gonna do my summary but this pretty much sums it up. I will further with a team impression.

Mooney is running the exact same offense we always run, which is a shame because with guys like Daughtry, Robinson, and Walz we could have a really dominant low post game. Unfortunately, we still have all of those guys positioned out at the 3 point line and with Walz with his back to the basket with the ball. As a result, we shot a crap ton of 3's all night and missed most of them and that is our offense. One would think that if Mooney insists of running this offense that he would go out and get complimentary player (i.e. shooters) to make it work.

I really like Daughtry (had a much better handle too than I thought), J-Rob is gonna be a fun player to watch. Agrabright is legit, I loved how he he stepped on the court and immediately made plays. Unafraid, of course he probably played much better competition in high school than he had last night. I was unimpressed with Johnston, Lopez, and Thomas. Johnston and Lopez have solid track records at this level so perhaps an off night but lets just say there is no Jordan King in our transfer group this year.

I’m not campaigning for mcglothin but thought his shot looked good, he wasn’t afraid to put it up, and defensively looked respectable and active.

Aiden should get a lot of minutes and Daughtry has a pretty good handle.

Yep, Tbone, we know it's going to be a losing battle campaigning for McGlothin. With Mooney's stated strategy of building on HS recruits, and McGlothin seemingly a good recruit for us, with 365 days of practicing and learning the system - and our podcasters giving first hand report that he looks a cut above the "typical Richmond recruit" - you really think he could have worked him in the rotation a bit against a mediocre D3 team. Maybe he talked back to him once, or his dad reached out or something like that. Like Duinker and Dji and so many before him. This is the time of year to at least get him in for 8 minutes a game. But Mooney put him in about 20 seconds before Kirby Mooney, and after true freshman Harper. Wild to me. If he is that bad after 365 days in the program, it's either he is a miss and just does not have the ability, or we have done a super poor job of developing him.

In today's RTD there's an article in which Moon is quoted as saying, "This is such a unique time, and I do think there's going to to be somewhat of a shift back where guys stay at their school for four of five years".

My thinking is just the opposite with new era of portal and NIL. I think it'll be be more transactional for players and more shifting around amongst schools. Additionally, the ones that stay 4 or 5 years at one school will be a % of good players but a greater % of players who have little upside or demand from other schools. Time will tell.

Mooney has been making that statement for at least a year now. It is the one thing that I hope becomes a reality, but isn’t going to until the NCAA makes it so and they aren’t going to do anything until Congress makes legislation to cover them.

The NCAA can’t win in court on anything. Here is the latest appeal that totally makes sense in terms of the current environment ruining college competition:

Mooney didn't quantify when he thought that shift was going to occur. It is not occurring right now that is for sure, it just getting worse every year with roster turnover and schools outbidding one another for players.

players ahead of him played 32 minutes and combined for 1-12 shooting 0-11 from 3 pointer and 2 rebounds. McGlothin did that in 3 minutes, will we get to see more opportunity?

Men lie and women lie. 1-3 with 3 minutes and 2 rebounds compared to others in front of him with 32 minutes and 1-12 shooting. Hopefully Opportunity presents itself tmrw night.
