Game Thread - Gardner-Webb @RC - Sat Nov 22, 7pm - ESPN+

I get where you’re coming from in terms of wanting to maximize the metrics, but I think the risk of having an injury to a starter playing in a game that’s a blowout outweighs whatever NET boost we get from winning a game 30+ vs. 40+ points.
I get it and appreciate your acknowledgement. I’m a die hard and just want us to be in the best possible position, always

Lot of fun to watch. I do feel like the chemistry is night and day compared to last year - so far. As we discussed prior to the first game, it is going to be hard to know what we truly have until we get to conference play.
I think the rotation will tighten up, and that is when hopefully that chemistry and one for all attitude will remain.
Thinking Daughtry may well be the x factor. He has been very very effective so far. But he is a bit undersized, and we know that limited him a bit at Indiana State. Can he play at this level in conference play? Same with Beagle. He has looked very good so far, being able to out athlete and out work these opponents so far. Can he carry that into A10 play?
Feeling pretty good that AJ, Colin, Aiden and our other guards/wings will do well and step up.

AA is giving me Kevin Andersen "Ballin" vibes. Gaining confidence every game that he is real deal now and will play well all season.

Not much to glean from a game like last night except this - there is a much bigger separation between the 25-26 version of the Spiders and the 300+NET teams than there was last year. In other words, we still dont really know what we have, but I think its clear we are not what we were last season.

Bummer they’re both out tonight. This would be the perfect game to get them some extended run.
Mooney said the same thing in the post game. Are you feeding him material? /s

The good news is there are a few more cupcakes on the schedule, so hopefully they are available later in the OOC schedule.

And one other thing I’ve noticed this year that I haven’t in all my years following Richmond basketball is that we are dunking the ball. How many emphatic dunks have we seen this year?
I have had this same thought numerous times this season and again last night. After multiple different guys dunking in this game I thought to myself that the dunk total this season is already more than the last 5 seasons combined. Dunks have been so infrequent I figured Mooney must coach them to not dunk.

Let’s hope the energy keeps flowing for the holiday tournament in Florida. Next tip at 11 am, so will be a two factor adjustment.

Go Spiders!

I love me some dunks. I do think they are a big energy booster, for the team and crowd.

But...again this is a thing that is relative to competition. The harder you have to work, the better the defense is, the harder it is to get your steps and have the energy to throw it down in the game. We have had a lot of wide open three attempts and wide open dunk attempts (see parting of the seas for AP to get a running start with ZERO impediment).

I do think Jrob will get dunks no matter the defense. And I think AJ will have some big one's this season in A10.
Other than Jrob, I don't think you will see anyone put up dunk numbers like a Smitty or Burton, or even a Bigs. Lest you forget, early game in NYC vs Cuse, Bigs had a monster dunk, and had a ton of dunks throughout the season.

Biggest thing I think this team excels at over the last 10 years is the quick and decisive ball movement. If we can just keep that up in A10 play I think we can be good. Think back to over the last 10 years our guys (even the Gilly/Golden teams) that looked for the next pass instead of looking for opportunity, and how it would absolutely drive us insane. This is why I love Argabright so far, I think he really fosters the intentional ball movement - either to get it to a guy to score, or to set up the next play. Not just pass it around the perimeter. I like the entire team's mentality with this so far, but Argabright seems like the tone setter.

we won 8 D1 games last year and Father's worried about building an at-large resume. barring something miraculous, we're not a tournament team. we were picked 11th in a conference that BEST CASE sends 2 teams now. there are still some glaring holes ... like our 3 point percentage is somehow even lower than last season even playing these weak teams.

but maybe we are heading in the right direction. we'll see come conference play. hard schedule or not, this team needs to be playing it's best ball in March. if this weak schedule helps us build to that, then great. we are able to develop some young guys more than we would in more competitive games. our somewhat realistic goal should be the double bye to give us our best chance.
You think we are headed in the right direction because we are beating up on cupcakes at home, lol. Schedule some decent/good teams and see where we are at.
And yes every year the goal/hope is to be in at large consideration or at least it was before Mooney destroyed that hope and expectation.
Keep on your rose colored glasses and keep getting excited for worthless/hopeless basketball season with 19 wins against Q4 opponents, so Mooney can make $2.5 M for another 10 years. Pathetic.
