Game Thread - VMI @ RC - Wed Nov 19 7pm ESPN +

That is because there is no audio on the YouTube video. Wonder if the staff will retry. Otherwise, I suppose everyone can either practice their lip reading or just ad lib the usual commentary.
Yeah, that's what I meant. They uploaded it to YouTube twice, but neither one had audio. We'll have to make do with JOC clips for now.

I usually like to throw in a couple player observations but we were playing such an inferior team, it really is difficult to say someone played well or didn't play well. It does say something that we just blew them out of the water, as that is what good teams should do to inferior opposition.

The main question I have is how and if Mooney tightens the rotation once we actually start playing legitimate teams. We have a plethora of inter-changeable players with our bench routinely outscoring and out-minuting in some cases our starting 5.

Whether we are actually a good team or not though is a complete unknown as you just can't make any determination when playing just really bad overmatched squads. We have another one on tap for Saturday.
Well stated. Agree on all points.

So far it is playing out the way that most probably felt if they weren’t willing to say. Play a bunch of inferior teams at home that should lead to comfortable wins. Many were skeptical because of the traditional OOC letdowns in the past couple of years, but that seems to have been mitigated by more intense preseason practices.

Hopefully the team can keep up the intensity as the ego may take hold for ill effect. After Saturday, we will see how the team responds to playing away from the RC as well as experiencing a slight increase in competition. There isn’t really a major test on the schedule until the first conference game. The question is whether the Spiders can play each and every game with the same level of play.

The use of essentially all players may also help with the intensity level as you have to think the entire OOC is really an extended “live in-game” testing period to see what the A10 rotation will be. Thus there is true competition for each and every spot on the floor. No one can be lazy unless they want to jeopardize future playing time.

I think the GW game will give us the answer.

I was thinking about it more and I think it’ll be some hybrid from what Mooney usually does and the 11+ players we play a game. I don’t think we will have guys that play Gilly type minutes for us. I think there are about 7-8 guys Mooney feels best fits the system and will play the most and then another 2-3 guys who can get some decent minutes depending if the first 7-8 guys get in foul trouble, are having a bad game, or don’t match up as well with the opponent.

Depth is a very good thing and certainly one of the deepest teams I can recall us having. Like you pointed out, hard to gauge what we have still this year but best we can do is beat opponents by as much as possible, and get more game minutes acclimating to one another as GW will be a very tough test to start the season.

Another thing is, for as long as I’ve been following Richmond basketball, we’ve had at least 1 OOC game a year where we lose to a team we have no business losing too. There’s still 9 games left, but am glad to see us beat bad opponents handily. Looks like W&M will be a solid team in CAA this year. They beat a good Bowling Green team last night and were hanging tough with St. John’s for a half. Hopefully they get into Q3 range for us.

I like Wilson as a coach. Got VMI to the semis last season in the socon conference tourney. Feel like this is one of their most talented teams in a while. Rickey Bradley Jr was the pre season Socon player of the year and hasnt played any games this season so far. Once he gets back they can make some noise in their league

This game is another one that really shows we get production from so many plays. VMI’s best player Johnson was 1-11 with 6 points. Remember that he had 31 against Mizzou earlier this season.

Meanwhile we don’t have that one guy who has to be on for us to have a shot. I know it’s still early and the opponents have been weak, but we have 8, yes EIGHT, players averaging 7+ points per game. Our two highest scorers are Beagle at 11 and Argabright at 12.8. We truly get points from everybody.

I had very low hopes going into this season but we look totally different from last year’s disaster.

Curious to see as this season develops who will turn into the alpha dog - guy you can count on for a bucket when you need it? I think it is Lopez but that means he’s going to have to be more assertive in games.

I don’t think we have an alpha this year but a lot of players who can step up and make big plays when needed. Could be a positive for us since it takes the pressure off one player to put the team on his back and harder for opponents to scout. The overall quality of players and the way we play now (I.e. aggressively) is better than last years situation where we didn’t have an alpha and players were timid to make big plays.

I think if it comes down to crunch time and the game is close, this is who we’ll rely on to get us the win.

1. Tyne (though I think Argabright has made a strong statement to be the main PG)
2. Johnston
3. Lopez
4. Daughtry on offense and maybe AP on defense where Mooney will switch them.
5. Beagle or Walz

When the game is tight and push comes to shove, it could be Jaden Daughtry.
I love how we have 3 answers to who the player is who is the guy we want with the ball in their hands at the end of the game. That will make us really difficult to defend.

I don't have an answer but the array of different jumpers that AA is not only comfortable taking but also is making is really quite impressive. Even more impressive for a freshman playing his 4th game.

right - many nightmarish memories of having no one last year on last possessions in a few games ..
