Game Thread - Southern Illinois @ RC - Sat 12/13 6pm ESPN+

Tyne deserves some of the blame for the foul that caused OT, but I put the bulk of the blame on Mooney. I don’t understand why he subbed Tyne into the game in that situation. He brought in Tyne for Johnston, which normally is fine, but in that situation I’d much rather have Thomas on the court, who is probably our best defensive guard.

Also don’t understand why you put Tyne into the game at that crucial point when he hadn’t played in probably 5-10ish minutes, and had hardly played in the second half. You brought in a guy who is cold, and not a great defender to begin with, when we needed a stop up 3. Makes no sense.

Not to mention the fact that Moon-man had a timeout to tell the team MAKE SURE YOU DON’T FOUL.

Side note, one of the worst reffed games in recent memory. The bald headed ref had it out for us from the start. Luckily there were plenty of bad calls both ways, so probably ended up evening out

What was that stat someone posted about how frequently Argabright draws fouls? After tonight he's bound to have moved up even more. He has an elite ability to put defenders in a tough position with his combination of quickness and smarts.

Good to get a win. But nothing to get overly excited about. Won a game at home against a team we should beat.

So I think we can start to understand a few things about this team - - - we are not nearly the bad team we had last year. We have not only better players but just more players. And 100% this team is well more fun that we have had in a good while. And we have a future (and not all that far in the future) star in Argabright.

But we aren't necessarily a good team. Could we be - - maybe but still a long way to go to say that. All we have really proven so far is that we can beat teams that we should beat. Belmont is a good win on the road and Furman takes a little luster off. So we know very little except we are better and deeper and more fun than last year!

Aiden is 5th in the nation for fouls drawn per 40 minutes. The 4 guys ahead of him are 6'8 or taller.

Philly don't spoil my mojo...it has looked to me like Belmont and Southern Illinois would be very competitive teams in the A-10...

we defeated both...I don't take those wins as proving we're headed for the top tier of the A-10, but hell I didn't think we'd be 9-1 and having fun at the Robins Center either!

keeping my chin up and looking forward to the A-10 schedule...

Go Spiders!

Agree wholeheartedly with the statement above Also agree that the Spiders are doing exactly what they should be doing and winning against the weakest slate of games ever in my opinion. Of course, winning the games that the team is supposed to win has been a challenge in recent years too.

Preseason most of the Forum was lacking confidence in how the Spiders would fare, so can understand the newfound excitement. https://spidernation.community.forum/threads/ooc-record-predictions.97/

I was on the optimistic side (10-3), but I did not think that the team would be as FUN to watch as they are. Need to spread the word and get the RC filled for the A10 matchups!

Agree. I thought SI was a solid team and very aggressive taking the ball inside. In my mind they were every bit as good as Belmont. Maybe this was an expected win for us, but we had to earn it. We did some outstanding things when needed last night, and it showcased good skills of several of our players.

On the downside I saw three things - 1) too much overpassing first half 2) two sequences in first half where we gave up back to back 3’s on totally uncontested shots. That was 6 points. 3) I believe we got out-rebounded 42-28???? SI a physical team and similar to what we will see in A10 play. Our shooting was good and offset rebounding deficit. But we had been doing better in games prior to this I think.

Beagle was outstanding. He is playing great in all phases. I think I was a little down on him last year, but he has been such a different player this year. And, I like the emotion he is bringing as well.

Johnston continues to show he can score. We need his scoring and I like how he doesn't shy away from pressure shots. He has the patience and awareness to get to a good spot and get a good look, even when the clock is winding down.

Aiden is so impressive. What a great player. Court awareness and high IQ off the charts. He just seems one step ahead, and his ability to draw fouls at one end and draw those charges at the other end is huge for a PG.

AP didn't score much, but he continues to impress me with other parts of his game. I can see why he gets good minutes for us.

Lopez is a bucket getter, and continues to make shots and get to the line when things look a little broken down out there.

These 5 got most of the minutes, and I like what all of them have shown so far.

Daughtry has been impressive as well, and can score at the basket and from 3.

I have been hard on Tyne, and he only got 14 minutes, but he gave us some good scoring and good minutes in the 1st half. I think he can be a good 15 minute a game player for us if he shoots well.

Walz seems inconsistent and it is all about aggressiveness. He is so much better when aggressive, on both sides of the floor. Beagle is playing really well and we seem better with him out there, but we still need good minutes from Walz as well.

I think with these 8, we have a clear top 8. Tanner and Thomas didn't do much yesterday, but I don't think they hurt us out there. They both seem like good defenders. Thomas will likely continue to get 10-15 minutes, and he has shown he can get hot with the 6-7 from 3 point land game. Tanner is starting, but I think with others playing at a higher level and being more impactful, we could see less minutes from him. Williams only got 5 minutes ( in a 45 minute game), so I think we are getting an idea of where he is in the rotation. I really think he is one of those 6'5 tweener types who doesn't have the guard skills you want, and also doesn't have the height to hang with bigs down low. With us having good depth, and AP and Daughtry playing well, I just don't see where he fits in right now.

Beagle had a good game. Last year some on the board were all over him. Said he had "small hands". Guess they grew over the off season.

As far as AP goes, I actually thought he had a solid game tonight overall. Offensively, he’s not much of a threat scoring but doesn’t turn the ball over and defensively he’s always in position to alter shots, rebound or tip the ball, steal the ball, and even had 2 blocks tonight. He doesn’t jump out on the stat sheet, but he does enough small and intangible things right, that I can see why he gets more playing time despite virtually being a non-scoring threat.
AP is 97th in Defensive rebounding. But 3rd on the team. Getting more defensive rebounds helps reduce the other teams offensive rebounds.

But not yesterday, loss that battle 15-2. Part of the reason we struggled yesterday.

Exactly. This is why rebounding on both offense and defense is critical. You can’t always rely on other fundamentals of the game to make up for deficit rebounding. Last night we did, but that always won’t be the case.

On offensive rebounding Beagle is 21st but we are 252 as a team. But being effectively 29th as a team defensively helps.
