Game Thread - @Belmont / Wed Dec 3 7:30 PM - ESPN+

we're averaging 60 shots per game. 33 twos and 27 threes ... plus 26 FTs.
last year we averaged 54 shots. 29 twos and 25 threes ... plus only 17 FTs.

some has to be attributable to the weaker competition (as last year's numbers include the A10 season).
another factor is we're averaging a surprising 12.4 offensive rebounds per game this season compared to only 6.5 ORBs last season. but again ... we'll see if that holds up when we play tougher comp. we only got 3 last night.

I was so focused on the game that I didn't really see the Belmont bench once. Is Aidan Noyes injured or just literally the last guy on the bench (which is pretty insane to think about given how hyped at one point we were about him)
Noyes has been in street clothes for weeks but I haven’t been able to find any mention of what the issue is.
Dressed and ready to head quickly to The Ryman.

Noyes had 2 quiet games this year.

11 minutes with all 0s.
14 minutes with 2 points and 1 rebound.

From what I saw last night, I don't know why he would get minutes with them.

Agree. I do think I read that he’s been injured. I remember him being a high flyer / soaring player, but he never “took off” for us.

I'm late to the party on providing thoughts about the game but a few observations:

I think not having Tyne for this game is a big factor in the win. We've seen a few things this year that makes me think this 1) he dribbles the ball way too much with no intent which ends up stalling the offensive flow 2) he regularly gets targeted on defense by opposing teams where they post him up in a 1 on 1 iso in the low post and 3) we got to see Thomas for way more minutes which obviously was aided by his awesome shooting night.

AA - I would start him over Tyne. He runs the offense with much better efficiency (eye test and advanced stats would agree) and he seems to be a good defender thus far, even when giving up a significant height advantage.

Johnston - great game and best one as a spider. I hope to see this level of leadership and intensity out of him every game. I do worry about his ability to handle the ball against more athletic, aggressive defenses.

AP - I'm not as low on him as others in this thread because I think he does some nice things on the glass, handles the ball well for his size and doesn't turn the ball over much (he has the same amount of turnovers on the season as Daughtry had in the Belmont game alone) BUT he absolutely has to shoot better. He has the same 3 PT shooting percentage as Colin Tanner so I would hope one of them can get on track.

Daughtry - he's a tough dude to guard, really love his 1 on 1 game. But he needs to stop turning the ball over by taking on double teams.

Beagle > Walz. Stats and eye test back this up on both sides of the ball.

As much as people may not want to admit it (me included), this was actually a very good coaching job by Mooney. The execution down the stretch was very solid, especially compared to historically. The inbounds play on the sidelines where Lopez broke towards the basket and everyone else went the other way was really smart, he drew the shooting foul and is the team's best FT shooter.

Good observations all around. Daughtry does tend to keep backing down and spinning and at one point Belmont had three guys on him and he turned it over. Of course another play he went through two guys and somehow scored it. I'm actually little surprised his 3pt percentage is not higher, b/c it seems when he gets an open look it goes in. I think if he can take a second on some of those back downs to look out, he will find a guy or two wide open on the three pt line. Overall like what I am seeing from him.

Agree about Tyne - I do think he can contribute - but he needs to play more like the other guards - which is make a decisive move, or hit the three, or move the ball quickly to move the defense. He dribbles into the lane, but doesn't seem to find the shooters. Will be interesting to see the chemistry when he is back.
