Fire Mooney

I’d love to know if the source was a starter, bench, or deep bench player. Context matters a ton here.

But regardless, the fact that someone on the team was sharing that as more than just their personal take is not shocking to me.

You wonder how much of that there is as opposed to how much loyalty factor.

I agree. Now that he says it wasn't Dji, I guess because we have had so many recent transfers, it could be one of about 10-15 guys. And it wouldn't be surprising.

Over the weekend I was talking with a friend from college that happens to know a former recent Richmond player who I wont name that said some interesting things that I was not expecting.

1. A lot of the players are starting to get frustrated with Mooney and feel like his system and game management are not successful in this age of college basketball. Also said he feels like Mooney is not good at picking rotations and a lot of recent players have been frustrated.

2. Burton did not want to leave Richmond for his 5th season. Burton loves Richmond and wanted to stay, but Richmond would not meet his NIL needs. Even after Villanova offered his NIL deal he asked Richmond to match it and they said no. If this is true that's a shame on the University if we have Burton on that team with King we make it to the big dance no question.
I don't think keeping Burton would have necessarily made us a better team. Remember the year prior, CM tried to run everything through Burton and had he returned Mooney being Mooney probably would have done the same thing.

That right there is why Mooney needs to go. You want as many talented players on your team and it's the coaches job to figure out how to make them all work together. Something that Mooney is awful at and gets bailed out when he has a great PG like Gilly or Kevin Anderson because they are running the team while on the floor.

I don't know how Mooney says some of this sh*t with a straight face. As Brook points out, our switching defense has been exploited all the way back 15 plus years ago by St. Mary's. And here is Mooney pontificating on how we need to address it in 2025. If he is here another 5 years, he will make the very same statement in 2031 too and JOC will probably write the same damn article about it.

Groundhog Day

In fairness to our diminutive guards, Samhan was working our bigs easily too.

I remember when they announced the players pre game, and they shook hands, it appeared he was trash talking Darius Garrett pretty strongly. Garrett seemed little taken back.

All of JOC's stuff just comes from his press conferences. This is from the Bona postgame...timestamped vid:

"The positive is you can take away the edge, the ball handler, and other things".

1. When have we consistently taken away the edge?
2. When have we taken away the ball handler?
3. What other things have we taken away?
4. Even if we did take away these things, and we don't, why would this be a positive if it leads to them easily scoring at the basket every time?

it's another example of our roster not matching the scheme.
it's one thing to switch when you've got guards like Dji, or Goose, or Brothers, or Gonzo, or Butler or Sylla.
but we recruit sub 6'0" guards for the advantages on the offensive end.
