Game thread - @URI 2PM SAT Feb. 7th. ESPN+

Am I correct the pattern holds, we haven’t beaten anyone who has more A10 wins than us, we haven’t lost to anyone who has the same or less?

Still looks like 5-13…

Sometimes good offense can make up for or at least equalize bad defense. I agree that the team lost because of horrific defense, but I also think watching an offense that has five guys outside the three point line for 90 percent of the time means no offensive rebounds, no three point plays on drives, no chance to get the other team in foul trouble like they did to us, etc. We lost by five points. I can't believe just moving Walz iunder the basket ten more times wouldn't have created some of what I mentioned above. We wont beat good teams with a terrible defense but we could beat bad teams more than we have so far. I admit that Walz has almost no inside game anymore because the Moon man seems to think that having NO ONE under the basket isn't really a problem. This offense seemed to stress threes, now it seems to require threes. Unfortunately almost no one wins constantly like that.
Especially when they do not rebound, nobody makes all their shots.

Watch this interview--at least the Mooney part. Good interview, and seems like he knows what we need to do to fix things. you listen to this and you realize he knows what he's doing.

What I appreciate is he has command on what needs to be fixed but also mentions how proud he is of the effort.

If he knew what he was doing we wouldn’t be in this situation after 20 plus years. We are hanging out in the basement of A10. Of course he knows what he’s doing even though everything we see says “not”.

And after all this, the guy that created this is going to fix it. Copy that.

I admire you propping up the coach, Will. But I disagree with your points.

95% of the folks on this forum know how to fix it.

I think most serious fans could have said what he did.

Respectfully, disagree. There isn’t one substantial comment made in there as to what we need to fix. I heard “defend without fouling” and “reduce turnovers”. I certainly didn’t hear a plan to fix either of those things. Play softer on D? Stop trying to thread the needle on low percentage pass plays which we do all the time?

We are 24 games into the season, the time to fix this stuff was before November, December at the outside. It’s too late Alva.

I smell UR80sFan in the building…

does he know? We are on a 6 game losing streak with no end of that in sight. If he knew how to "fix" things it would've happened by now.

If we played a normal OOC schedule, not a hard one just a normal one, we would probably be about 6-18 right now. We have one good win all year (Belmont) and lost to Ch Southern, Elon, Furman, and Rhode Island twice, as well as a few other teams any decent team would beat.

I argued with someone who said you can't play both man and zone well ... it's one or the other. could be he was right. though we don't play either well. but that 2-3 zone we've throw together after not working on it at all in the weak OOC is the worst 2-3 I've seen. we run our 2-3 like a 6th grade travel team. there are holes everywhere. no problem getting the ball to the high post. and from there it's easy pickings. never seen teams get dunks against a 2-3.

also, this tiny lineup is driving me crazy. we're playing 4 guys who weight like 180 lbs and we wonder why we get bullied. size matters. our defense apparently will suck no matter who plays, so please play Daughtry more than 11 minutes. at least he's aggressive offensively and goes towards the basket. or play AP. or Jaylen. somebody with some size.

Agree, sman. The 4 guard lineup hasn't worked all year. They all just don't fit well together, and are not versatile enough. We should always have either AP, Daughtry, or JRob on the floor with our big and 3 of the guards. As bad as our defense is, our offense looks just as bad with guys just throwing it around the perimeter. We are way too easy to defend and way too easy to score against.

I found it ironic that they made Robinson player of the game for the Davidson game had him on for the coaches show on Monday night talking about this increased play and performance and than Mooney turns right around and plays him 5 frickin minutes the next game.

yes. Both Tanner and Lopez would be somewhat on the small / skinny side for a traditional SF slot and would profile better into a 2 guard position, assuming no ball handling duties alongside a superior PG ballhandler. And we have pointed this out since his recruiting visit, but Tanner looked 2 inches shorter than 6'6" Moon on that visit, so I'd say he's 6'4" and not whatever they list him at. He looks smaller than guys out there.

Think about David Gonzalvez - he's both taller and bigger physically than anyone we started last game at the 1-4 positions, and he was a staple at the 2. That's an insane shift toward a small team. Again, the recruiting has blinders on and are trying to fill past archetypes, but overdoing it and getting watered down versions of what worked, while exacerbating the issues that did not work with those archetypes.

Back when Moon first fell in love with the small PGs, VCU was throwing their full court aggro press all game and 2 superior ball handlers were needed. Now we just have tiny SGs for no reason that are not creators for the most part (Johnston, Tyne).

We need more length at guard for sure. Im good with one small guard which we have assuming AA stays. The roster construction is bad. We look like a low major team in terms of size at most spots. We are also not a quick team. Slow and small is a bad recipe in the A10.

And don't forget non athletic. So, other than slow, small, not quick, and non athletic.....
