Baseball update

I (and I'm sure some of you) got an update from coach Aoki this morning.

"I hope this note finds you well. It is difficult to believe that the spring semester is underway and that our first game is less than a month away! It seems the days, weeks, months, and years go by faster as I get older.

This year’s team will look very different from last year’s. We will basically have a brand-new lineup. Our pitching staff will consist of guys that got their “feet wet” last year and will have the chance to earn larger roles this year. We will also have a good group of older guys who transferred into the program and are getting graduate degrees. A few of these guys are position players and a few are pitchers.

I am excited about the group. We had a very good fall. Our lineup is very talented and very athletic, but we’ll be on the younger side. We won’t have quite as much power as last year’s team did, but we will be able to “play offense” more than we did last year. We will look to force the action.

On the mound, this is definitely the most talented group I’ve had the chance to coach going into my third season with the Spiders. As you know, commanding the strike zone is pretty much the most important thing as a pitcher. As long as these guys keep that foremost in their minds and execute this season, I feel very good about what they can do.

As there will be a decent number of younger athletes contributing, I do think we’ll hit a few bumps early. Once we weather those setbacks, I think this team will be a good one and be a credit to the great tradition of Spider Baseball.

Amazing that Spider Baseball is only a few weeks away! I hope you can come out and see the club. Our schedule has been finalized, and we are excited to compete. We are so grateful for your continued support. Thank you and Go Spiders!"

Lots of game at beautiful Pitt Field. Makes me wish I still lived in Richmond! The schedule:
