Worst bookstore in the nation?

PASpiders

Walk-on
Trying to understand why we have a top 10 lacrosse team, yet I can only find 1 dance team t-shirt and 1 baseball t-shirt on the bookstore’s website. Our bookstore has always had a limited selection, but this is beyond pathetic. Also, do we have the worst lawyers in the country who couldn’t get us permission to just put a spider on clothing items without the tiny and awkward “UR” next to it? Finally, did we find the cheapest graphic designers to come up with that logo? Embarrassing all around.

The UR next to the Spider is the absolute worst logo. Another sign that the University doesn’t care about fan support. Somehow the athletes manage to have gear with just a Spider logo. Of course, Mooney is the model for the fans - don’t wear any gear or team colors for that matter.

Whoever the buyer is for the bookstore needs to be informed that some clothing options have changed since 1997. They still sell some of the 100% cotton t-shirts they had back then. Blah. There have been a few advancements in clothing styles, shockingly, since then.

Just wanted to remind everyone that with a victory over Cornell, we could have the #1 ranked men’s lacrosse team in the nation. Yet, you can’t find a lacrosse shirt at the school. A dance team shirt in men’s sizes? Yes, of course.

I completely agree and have commented this to my wife whenever we visit UR. Looks the exact same as when we were students. The bookstore is often the first and last thing prospective students and families visit before leaving campus. Needs to make an impression. For all the renovation our school focuses on, surprised this isn’t one of them.

I remember discussions around a renovated Commons with greatly enhanced bookstore some 20 or more years ago, but it never came to fruition.

The new master plan calls for a refreshed and reimagined student-focused Commons, moving some of the more administrative functions it houses elsewhere. Hopefully a revamped bookstore is part of that, but of course no guarantees that a renovated physical facility will translate to a better selection of products.

Ok, then they have the worst website in the nation. It would be nice if they included those tees in the Men's Tees section:

IDK, pretty simple to type "lacrosse" in the search bar. We are UR graduates, right?

I've always found a pretty good selection on my trips there, and plenty of tee-shits and caps for every sport. Obviously, other's mileage varies.

I've always been underwhelmed. I go every year on my annual pilgrimage back to campus, but I rarely buy anything. Even when I have specific types of things in mind, I haven't liked the options they have.

The available selections are an embarrassment compared to W&L, for example, a school half our size but with a two-floor bookstore and a massive array of items of so many different kinds.

There is always room for improvement, acknowledged. Sometimes our university seems stymied by tradition or the "that's the way we've always done it" mentality.

I was at the Furman bookstore last year. Seemed on par with ours, maybe even a bit smaller. I did buy a sweatshirt and a hat, I love their logo.

I also visited the NMSU and UTEP bookstores on a different trip. They were very nice, but of course their schools are much larger than UR. Central Michigan has a small bookstore in their football stadium that puts the meager offerings we have at games to shame.

I do enjoy visiting college bookstores, as my collection of tees, sweatshirts and caps will attest. OSU has an excellent store, conveniently located in the bottom level of a parking garage right across the street from the football stadium and basketball arena and baseball stadium.

If anything, now our new board member can locate lacrosse-related items.

Yeah, that makes sense. Don’t list it in the t-shirts section when I’m looking for a t-shirt. Should have known it wouldn’t be that easy. Turns out they do have one t-shirt in 3 different colors. My guess is you dress like my grandfather if you’re happy with the selection. Tired, generic designs. Probably go well with your New Balance shoes though.

I am going to beat the affordability drum here too. I"m at the bookstore numerous times a year. I always see many things that I want to buy, either for myself, my family, or as gifts. And most often I walk out empty handed, because everything is too expensive. Message to UR (and this applies to everything): NOT EVERYONE MAKES SIX FIGURES (or more). Many of your alumni and our families have price constraints and budgets. Please remember us in your event pricing and your merchandise pricing.

Also, along those lines, someone above mentioned visits from perspective students. We've been trying to increase our demographic diversity for years. The school has several initiatives to recruit and support first generation college students. And when they come to campus they are faced with $30 t-shirts, $50 sweatshirts, etc. And that immediately cements the perception of "rich kids' school, this place is not for me."

Mr. Internet Tough Guy. Positively quaking in my shoes, whatever brand they are.

The bookstore has hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of items on sale. Not every item can be on the main website. It took all of five seconds to find lacrosse items. I shouldn't have done the work for you.

PS: The New Balance shoe company was founded in 1906. It's been around for 119 years. They must make some high-quality merchandize to remain in business that long.
