Around the A10

I know sman doesn't believe in the Woj Effect. Fine. Just means that again, he wasn't able to sit down and show Buddy tapes of Jordan King, and the have PQ walking the room with his NIL check book anf get Simmons to committ. Guess it was those scenic February morning walks across the campus in Olean. WTF!!! But I feel better that it was the Woj Effect. If it wasn't then it definitely was the Moon Effect, same one that Cutter felt.
don't know if Woj had an effect, but not hard to imagine Schmidt beating Mooney.

I remember when they extended him after he'd been on the job for a year and gone 16–16 in that season. Yes, that was an uptick from how they had been performing, but it still felt quick to extend and then he promptly went 15–17 including 4–14 in A-10 play that next season.

Had a better record last season, but it was in no small part due to playing one of the worst OOC schedules in the country, something we're now trying to emulate.

I'm forgetting worse! I only remember us with Hunger.
Hunger was the big one we really wanted. We were one of a bunch of A-10 teams that offered Chaudhri, also out of NMH. I don't recall that he visited, but my memory is a little fuzzy on that.

Again a little fuzzy on the details, but I remember us being a finalist for Johnson but he committed to Princeton. He had a hip issue before he even arrived there that turned out to be a tumor. Left school for surgery and recovery and eventually elected to transfer to GW. He was out almost two years with multiple surgeries and rounds of chemo, but got the all-clear.

Dinkins was a passing mention with us out of the portal from Canisius.

Still hoping GKILLER makes his way back to the new forum, but in his honor — since we both really wish Bobby Buckets had been a Spider — I did a quick check on Bobby Durkin and Reed Bailey, who to my general surprise both transferred from Davidson to Big Ten teams last spring.

Bobby Durkin (Minnesota - Jr) – Gophers are 4–1. Durkin isn’t starting, averaging 17 minutes, 5 points, and about 1.5 rebounds/assists per game. Hard not to wonder if he’s second-guessing the move unless the NIL money made it a no-brainer.

Reed Bailey (Indiana - Sr) – Starting for a 5–0 Indiana team. Playing 19 minutes with 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 2.5 assists. Hoosiers are likely to be ranked in the Top 25 next week.

Tired of the scheduling excuses from coaches. Yes, we know a lot of majors won't play good mid majors. So, if that is the case, what is stopping a bunch of top mid majors from playing multiple games against each other? If asked the question about scheduling, fine, say it is hard to get games, and leave it at that. We don't need a 2 minute answer everytime it is asked.

He mentioned kenpom, which is probably close to the NET in most cases. A top 100 neutral game and an away top 135 game is Q2. So, go find a lot of these type games. Wichita and No Iowa are top 100 right now, as are Liberty and High Point. And teams like Tulsa and UAB are just outside the top 100. These teams are all usually pretty good with Q2 potential, maybe even Q1 if you play them at their place, they have great years, and end top 75. So, instead of scheduling a bunch of 300+ type games where you pretty much know it will be Q4, find more of these likely top 100 or 150 games. And, if these teams have bad years, it won't be close to 300+, so maybe it is still Q3, but if they have good years, you get a Q2, or maybe Q1, out of it.

We could have found 8 of these type games, if not neutral than 4 home and homes, and still had room for 3 home cupcakes and our MTE tourney.

Who knows? We could be a really good team this year, but unless we win a minimum 12 games OOC and 15 more IC for a 27 win regular season, our chance for an at large bid was all but eliminated when we made this schedule.

you're correct that our schedule does not set us up for one of the very few at-large bids that mid-majors will get. we've discussed that plenty. it's better to beat good teams than bad teams.

but you greatly increase your risk of losing ... see Loyola. preseason #5 in the A10, much higher than us. how's that working out at 1-4 with losses to Wichita St, Colorado St, and North Texas? they've shot themselves in the foot.

we're not getting an at-large unless the conference ends up ranked around #7 and we go 15-3.
we're doing more to help the conference ranking than Loyola is with their tougher schedule.

Loyola being 1-4 with their schedule and us being 4-0 with our schedule still have the same very slim chance of at large. I completely agree with not scheduling too hard and losing those games, but we’re in the opposite extreme now.

Roussell said it best when he mentioned that he did not want our schedule to be the reason that keeps us out of NCAA. If we play good teams and lose… fine. It just means that we would have needed the AQ which would’ve been the case anyway.
