Around the A10

Tired of the scheduling excuses from coaches. Yes, we know a lot of majors won't play good mid majors. So, if that is the case, what is stopping a bunch of top mid majors from playing multiple games against each other?
I agree with you. But as far as what’s stopping it from happening…us going 8-22 against D1 teams is what stopped it this season. A good mid-major putting us on the schedule had the same appeal as us putting VMI on the schedule. We shot ourselves in the foot.

except we heard JMU wanted to play and we didn't call back.

Not defending our schedule or unwillingness to play JMU, but I wouldn’t consider them “a good mid major.” Their basketball team is pretty bad (and they’re not very good historically). I’d be fine with playing them, but they would be on par with many of the other teams we have scheduled OOC this year

If we play good teams and lose… fine. It just means that we would have needed the AQ which would’ve been the case anyway.
This. You have to have a chance to lose it. This year’s schedule didn’t give the Spiders a chance at an at-large.

The Men’s program and Women’s program are attacking the same problem in exactly opposite ways. I prefer the Roussell method. Unfortunately, the women’s program isn’t able to get enough butts in the seats but it is a superior product no doubt. Hopefully the Men’s A10 games will pack the RC. Seeing trace crowds is depressing.

Only went to the dance one of those years, did not even make NIT the other two. Have only danced twice in the past 30 years. Have already lost to Akron, Longwood, and LIU this year. I’m not opposed to playing them, but it’s silly to think they would’ve elevated our schedule.

They’re not a great program, and they play in a bad conference for basketball. I think some of us think they’re higher profile because they’re local and good at football.

they went to the dance once in last 3 years, have a 3 year 68-27 record, but they're not a "good mid major"?
I'm not saying they're Saint Mary's, but they'd clearly be one of the best games in our OOC.

?? They had NETs of 94, 52, and 156 the past 3 seasons.

Or, some of us think this because they had NETs of 94, 52, and 156 the past 3 years.

Sorry, I don’t agree that JMU has a good basketball program. They are an average team in a one bid league. Like I said, not opposed to playing them, I just don’t think they represent some huge scheduling miss. It would likely be another quad 3 game. If you feel otherwise, we’ll have to agree to disagree.

JMU over the last decade+ has had more success than we have. We are also an average team in a one bid league. With the proximity it would have been a no brainer to schedule them. You say they’d be a Q3 game like we weren’t a Q3/Q4 team last year.

Just when you think things cannot be worse for Loyola, they lose to an NIU team they were somehow favored by double digits against. I think safe to say Valentine has lost the team. Wow.

Every year seems like there is at least one A10 team that implodes like this in non-conference. Add that to the perpetual bottom feeders like Fordham and La Salle, and it really weakens the conference. Really hope the next commissioner will consider downsizing the conference, however unlikely that may be.

Every conference has some bad teams. There are enough teams in our league where we should be able to survive a team like Loyola struggling. Key word being should. If other top teams in the A-10 can get quality wins and the top and middle teams can avoid bad losses, we could be a good league. Key word being could.
