Argabright coming back (confirmed)

I'm saying I like the advantages he brings and can live with any disadvantages ... if we have the right guys on the floor with him. for one thing, need 4 others that can shoot.

a lineup like ...
AA
Rowan Brumbaugh
Tyler Burton
JRob
TJ Cline

and I realize that's an unrealistic all-star team. but if you have shooters, you can certainly play Robinson.
Interestingly, the grizzlies are playing Burton primarily at the 4 right now

Well, we decided to throw a whole press conference with AA and Mooney about the return. Anything for some positive PR I guess, but some interesting info here.

JOC went straight for the throat asking AA how much he’s making. AA declined to answer. JOC also asked if he was offered by other programs and how much he was offered, but AA said he didn’t get into $$ with other schools.

I believe that was @UR Fan 2 who asked if AA knew who else was returning - Aiden said he “hoped” Harper, Tanner, Daughtry, and Robinson would be returning.

Mooney also declined to state how much AA is making and who will be staying/going. Sounds like there’s still some decisions to make. He did confirm that the NIL budget will be increasing from last year.

Listen, I’m as happy as the next guy about AA returning but we’ve now made a post conference video and a made a whole article
about this. I get its NIL era now but it seems strange to be celebrating this that much. It should be the expectation that our good players return. We didn’t do this with KA, K0, SDJ, Ced, or Gilly returning. I guess we’re desperate to find something positive to hang our hat on. Personally, I’ll be more excited if we can bring in some stud transfers and actually play good teams in non-conference.

Also, kudos to JOC for asking some direct questions this time specifics on AA’s NIL dea, asking Mooney who else is staying/leaving. Asking “what’s necessary for player’s budget to contend in the A10” “do you recommend entering the portal for any of your players?”

Some highlights: I was typing as I was listening to the interview.

Interesting response from Mooney around the 10:30 min mark about how he used to think retention would be important but now realizes it’s “not the most accurate indicator for succeeding”. I will say that this was something I claimed day 1 of NIL era a few years back that with the money UR has, we can really capitalize by bringing in top guys for 1-2 years.

Looks like in-house GM is being look at and on the fore front in the future.

No staff changes this year, which is a real shame in my opinion. Shows no effort of is trying to think or do things differently.

Mooney had conversations with AA about players to surround him with.

Priority is getting guys with size, versatility, and athleticism

Around 19 min mark was answering question about roster size and pay for play. A little confused here. Not sure if Mooney was meaning compensating the guys who play or not necessarily utilizing the full allotted roster for scholarship/NIL players.

Mooney vaguely answering how things will be different next year. “Looking at everything” talks about adjustment. Didn’t really give any concrete ways things will be different.

Mooney comments that he thinks Dane and Deuce can play A10 level basketball as freshmen.

Last question of the interview was along Mooney what the player will be this year and got a response saying he doesn’t know what it will be. Not sure if that’s him just avoiding the questions (my guess what it is) or if there’s some flexibility and roll to go up if they think a certain player will be really good and we need just a little bit more NIL.

CM talked about getting bigger, possibly playing 2 big guys together. I think we've talked about it here more than he's really considered it before. I mean, I guess Grace played some forward.

also talked about the "contracts" not being real contracts but being agreements to pay a player ... but there's no weight on it that locks a player to UR. "and that's just the nature of it".

also said we're very excited about the 3 incoming freshmen, and that 2 of them can definitely play Atlantic 10 level basketball as freshmen. I assumed he meant Simmons and Cook, but JOC pushed him on it and he said Simmons and Dane Caldwell. but he said "Cook is a good player too so who knows".

questions were good and answers were thorough. worth a listen.

It was surprisingly a good interview. JOC asked good questions. Mooney didn’t exactly give any ground breaking answers but seemed more earnest in some ways with his responses and same old generic answers in others. It’s clear that we’re giving more NIL resources and I don’t blame Mooney for not wanting to disclose. I just wish our school wasn’t reactionary when giving NIL and instead be ahead of the curve. It seems like we only give more after the fact to keep up with the Jones’s rather than be trailblazers.

Sorry for being skeptical, but "CM" and "making adjustments" shouldn't be used in same sentence. They are mutually exclusive. Much of where we are after 21 years is because he moves at a snail's pace in making adjustments or just doesn't adjust period. We've just seen 2 years of bottom feeding in A10. I'll believe adjustments are actually real when I see it on the basketball court & in better use of players.

No rose colored glasses for me. I heard the same circular answers and no plan. The news is UR is paying AA significant money and the NIL budget is going up. Of course all teams NIL budgets are going up according to Evan Miya. Same coach, same staff and likely the same scheduling “issues” next year.

JOC did ask some direct questions, but many were asked multiple times and he knew he wasn’t going to get an answer. I guess recycling came quick today.

Excitement = 0

I agree 100%. I love AA, but my goodness, we seem to be acting like this was an either turn pro and be a top 5 pick, or stay in school type of thing. We absolutely should not be celebrating his return like this. All this does is show ridiculously bare the rest of our roster is.

Agree with the sentiment, I'm in the "show me stage"

But this is the offseason, our best time of year lately, because we can trick ourselves into being optimistic .

I will say, this is what we should be doing, running Mooney and Aiden out and talking to other guys to come play with Aiden.

We will see what comes out of it. We really really should be able land better guys than last two portals.

I have to admit, it was exhausting trying to prop up GW3 all last season.

I indeed coaxed out of AA who he thought was coming back. I was pretty delighted he answered.

I also asked Chris about roster size. Wanted to see if there was a lot of thought between 12 or 15. I gathered from the response that we want 15 because it makes practice better. I also picked up that not everyone at the bottom of the roster gets paid.

JOC gets to ask questions first and he came w questions galore today. I felt like it was the most productive presser I have been to.

Thanks for your hard work, good job!

Yes, Mooney said that because some players end up missing time etc that they like to have the full complement to be able to practice. I am sure every team likes to be able to go 5 v 5 and injuries always happen.

I heard that the end of the roster may not get paid either and this was a bit of a surprise as many of us thought that one of the pros of redshirting may be an extra year of cash in the pocket. I didn’t expect significant money of course, but thought they would get a small stipend which was mentioned when NIL first came into being. Suppose it is a sign that the budget is limited and that the redshirts are the long shots, which was another popular opinion.

"Its a very competitive world for international players, be we, just like everybody else, are interested in that"

Competing
Yes, competing. We saw St. Mary's have a lot of success with the Australian pipeline for years. And Mooney was supposedly buddies with Bennett. And Mooney went out and got Duinker, who looked like a really good prospect. And Mooney Hyped him as a potential A10 Rookie of the Year. But never meshed between Moon and Duink, and that was it for Aussie pipeline???? We heard of Euro guys but that never materialized.

We did have some good luck in Canada.
