2026 Portal Prospects

Matas was freshman of the year in the Ohio Valley conference. does it all in his highlights ... high post big, knocking down catch and shoot 3's, driving for dunks, and low post scoring and passing.

very skilled and pretty athletic. he'd be a great fit here.
Agreed, I like that kid, moves pretty well running the floor for 6'9". I'm wondering if something didn't go great on his visit since it was apparently Friday and we're now end of day Tuesday with no announcement. Maybe set the expectation he wasn't going to make any decision until he did all three of his intended visits though.

can't imagine the visit not going well. they all do.
Minnesota was the only scheduled HM visit. probably wanted to hear their proposal.
or he could wait for more schools ... but I wouldn't do that. if they don't love you early, you're a fall back option.

I know some posters here are concerned about Efeosa Oliogu-Elabor; however, he started 10 games alongside Kaiser this season. The type of instant chemistry between two new transfer can't be quantified in terms of importance in the portal era.

Secondly, he has elite NBA level athleticism with a nose for the basketball on the defensive end. If his offense develops, he will be a force to reckoned with..

Would love to get him. You can't teach that type of athleticism. And doing some digging seems like he is very good on defense. Sounds raw on offense. But our team that was successful 3 years ago was very good on defense, with being carried by one or two players on offense many nights. IMO we don't value defense enough.

This may provide interesting context into our budget for the next year. My daughter is super close with Angelo Ciarvino’s sister. They live in our neighborhood and he’s at northwestern. The only players sticking around are Phoenix Gill (Kendall’s kid. And he went to same HS as my Daughter and Ciaravino’s sister), Angelo and of course Jake west. He said his son’s not in the portal but schools reached out to his agent. Richmond reached out and said they’d give him 1.3M to come there. Who knows what our budget is, but we are definitely trying would appear.
I don't doubt this at all. I have heard from a few folks I know of a lot of crazy money out there. Now sman is going to be annoyed because we contacted him (his agent) and he is not in the portal.
I'm actually glad to hear we are being so aggressive and pursuing all angles. It irks me that we did not get this aggressive the last 600 to 700 days, but instead rolled with moons idea to build via HS recruits.

Glad to see we’re being aggressive with getting recruits and willing to spend big boy money. I have no idea what our total budget is, but I think it can still be what I anticipate of around $4.5-5 million and be aligned with my recruiting philosophy which is go find 2 studs and pay them over a million.

Now, do I think Ciaravino after googling that he averaged 6 ppg at Northwestern this season constitute a stud player worth that much, is up for discussion. Bottom line is we need to go get 1-2 sought after players which will likely mean paying north of a million for each player. We landed Kaiser. Now need at least 1 more, preferably 2 more of those guys.

Sorry, I find it nearly impossible we're offering a player like Ciarvino who is not even in the portal that kind of money.

Granted, the only things I've heard come from third-hand whispers, but that's way more than we're supposedly paying AA and Kaiser. For a guy on a sub-.500 team who lost his starting job for half the season while averaging 6 PPG and shooting 25% from deep.

But maybe I'm way off base.

I get it. I was skeptical as well. He was very convincing and no reason to lie, but who really knows. Kid can ball, and would kill in the a10 but not sure we would offer that much

Maybe for a 2-year deal? But even that seems high

if we are I hope we have $10m to spend bc that sounds outrageous for a team with a $5m budget to spend. >25% of your NIL on a guy who put up 20 total points the last 5 games of the year and shot terribly from 3 and from the FT line? Oof.

Maybe it was $1.3 over 2 years, so 650 each year? Even then I wonder how we couldn't find a better player.
And 20 total points his last 5 games while still averaging 23 mpg. His numbers are terrible. Good minutes all year with very little production. And on a bad team. This guy should not even be a rotation player for us if we want to be a good A-10 team. Why would we have any interest at all in him?

Our coaching staff has often proven themselves to be dubious evaluators of talent.

Thanks for visiting, I think he would be a good get for us. May not be all league out of the blocks, but he has a lot of room to grow.

if you're off base, I'm not even in the ballpark.
2200 kids in the portal, but we're reaching out to the agent of a kid not in the portal and offering 33% of our supposed budget to a wing averaging 6 ppg and shooting 26% from 3? lol

Yeah, agreed. It doesn't make any sense.

Kind of surprised. If we really wanted him I’m sure the connection with Mojo and Kaiser would’ve sealed the deal.

oooofff. Loved his athleticism and D. Clock is really starting to tick on this portal cycle. My prediction: If we don't land a couple good guys this week - we will end up with a similar haul to last two years for the remaining guys: Good scorers from lower level with big holes in their games.
