2026 Portal Prospects

Stony Brook guy only averaged those stats in calendar year 2026, his overall average for the year was 10.7 ppg. Had like 10 games in single digits. Very good shooting numbers, but at 6'2" what position is he in the A10 if he's not also a plus athlete? (no idea if so or not)

Can he get those shots off in the A10 against bigger and more athletic defenders game after game?

Hofstra freshman Preston Edmead - 16 ppg as a freshman this year (he did 5th year at prep school in Ct I believe) but is another small guard at 5'11". No idea what his current game may be, I saw him 4 years ago as a HS sophomore. He was on our map a couple years ago in recruiting IIRC but never real interest, as he seemed to be honed in on by only low majors. Speedy Claxton is his coach so maybe he'll stay at Hofstra and hope to follow Speedy somewhere and catch a bag if they have another good season.

I can’t imagine how great of a feeling it would be to be a VCU basketball fan the past 15 years. Made the final four. Capitalized that success joining the A10 and making 10 A10 finals in 13 season and several NCAA tournament appearances. Despite coaching changes still remaining at the top of the A10. Playing in top MTE tournaments every year and getting home and home with P4 teams. Having several players play in the NBA. Have an institutional commitment of being a power conference team. I just want a fraction of that for us.
Right -being a City of Richmond resident and in general thinking they have a very well run program with #0 being a St Chris connection, I admit I now root for our formal rival now in the NCAAs.

I checked and this book is 55% off on Amazon right now.

So have we heard the last of the departures? I’m still expecting JRob, Harper, and the redshirts back.

Daughtry to me is the only real question mark.

Yeah I seem to recall we were right up there on his list coming out of high school. He has only played two seasons, redshirting at Princeton his first year and then taking a year off from school to recover from the hip tumor surgeries. Transferred to GW where he played well in 2023–24 as a starter averaging 13.4/5.6, missed last season with an ACL tear, and then mostly came off the bench this season (but did start 11 games) and still averaged 11.4/3.4.

Career 36% three point shooter and takes a decent number of them for a big, so right up our alley and obviously we thought he was a good fit coming out of HS.

If he is fully healthy is a good athlete for his size and can shoot it pretty good. Problem I have is not really seeing the appeal to Richmond vs GW, unless we could offer more NIL. I loved his game coming out of HS. What a tough road he has encountered, would be a great story to start in his final year of eligibility.

Didn’t he make 4 of 5 from three against us in DC playing half a game?

Regarding Bray Dunlap, seeing his dad posting some videos and essentially running an advertising game for him. Get the vibe he is looking for a p5 payday and landing spot. I think he is someone who can help us. High % 3pt shooter. Good athlete, high motor guy from watching him in person this season. BUT, I think the other wings on SLU were better overall players, slashers, defenders. So not really seeing a huge role at a high level p5 team, so will be interesting if he is looking for a bigger role (and looking more lateral) or bigger payday as a designated shooter at a top paying p5. Betting on the p5 route.

yes, Dunlap likely wasn't going to get minutes on a St. John's team that it turned out desperately needed shooters, then was a bench player for SLU. Seems like that will be his lot as a P4 player as well. Unless he goes to a similar level squad that really needs players. But if SLU is all in on NIL not sure why he wouldn't have gotten more (NIL and minutes both) to stay there unless they plan to recruit over him and he'll be bench player again.

2 bigs in portal: which is better fit for us, both 6'10" A) FR 3years left Christian Gurdak, VT, B) Micheangelo Oberti, Soph, 2 yrs left. Neither have much PT but does either one work for us since we agree we need bigs. I suspect neither will command huge $.

You wouldn't think they would command big NIL, BUT it sounds like the market for good bigs is astronomical if you believe twitter, so that could filter down. Again, we should be exploring 5th year for Walz.

Gurdak is a solid player. Wasn’t expected to do anything and was a big surprise for the Hokies who had injury trouble all year.

Nothing flashy, but he can score down low and also plays D. I actually think he believes he can get paid more somewhere else. Definitely looked better than what Wessler (7 ft C) did when he was at VT. Wessler transferred to UNCW after last season and averaged 13.6 pts and 9.5 rebounds this season.

Might be an unpopular opinion here but even if Walz could play a 5th year I wouldn’t want bring him back as a starter. I appreciate the fact he’s been here 4 years and the loyalty he showed, but he has not shown anything to prove he can be an A10 level starter or garner meaningful minutes. If he plays in a back-up role, then I’d be more open to it.

This program needs a complete reset. This should really start with a coaching change but we’re not getting that. If we’re not getting a fresh perspective with coaching then at least we need one with new players. The 1 and 5 spot being the most important. Walz had 4 years to show that to us and unfortunately he was not able to produce at the level we need to be successful in this conference.

Why are you so interested in getting Walz back for a fifth year? He has consistently proven that he can’t be consistent. Just disappears for entire games.

I get that he knows the system, but I’d actually prefer to bring in guys who don’t know the system and force CM to adapt.

Evolve or die I say.

Oh, I'd prefer a complete reset too. I just think with this big man market we are in for a huge whiff at the 5 spot. I actually watched Wessler in person a few weeks ago, and the guy is huge but a complete stiff and no skill. Must have just feasted on smaller bigs. But I get your point about Walz. I guess I am just reusing the insanity plea, hoping he can play aggressive in a 5th season under Mooney.
