2025 Richmond Spiders Football - Opponents Countdown - Howard

believe it, or not, playing at The Brick House on September 27 to help the Spiders celebrate Family Weekend may be a big downer for the Bison...they might even consider Richmond to be a "breather"...

Howard, a historic and celebrated HBCU program, will play in three HBCU Classics plus their FBS game before coming to play the Spiders...the Bison play in the Orange Blossom Classic v. Florida A&M in Miami Gardens FL; the HBCU Classic v. Morehouse at Giants Stadium in the NYC area and the Truth and Service Classic in Washington v. long time rival Hampton...also included in the opening stretch Temple in Philadelphia!

with a schedule like this Spider fans know the Bison will be used to playing on the big stage in big football games...the question will be does the experience translate into more success in the wins and losses column...Howard comes off of a disappointing 2024 season...they scuffled to a 4-8, 1-4 MEAC record...5th year head coach Larry Scott hopes for better things this season...

two key running backs who produced a combined 1200 rushing yards and 11 TDs in 2024 return to Scott's preferred run first offense...the Bison are hoping a strong QB will emerge from a preseason competition...Scott's known for coaching a tough, physical defense...two Bison DL were voted to the All MEAC preseason team...Howard was pegged by the MEAC poll to finish 5th in the six team conference...

Spiders fans, this will be Richmond's final non conference game before beginning six consecutive games versus new Patriot League opponents...I expect we'll be significant favorites...a strong game against to Bison would give the team good momentum going into the remainder of the schedule!

enjoy the Countdown!

THE NFL PROSPECT: Noah Miles, Howard DL — A disruptive presence in the interior, the 6’4″ 250 lb. prospect finished fourth in the MEAC in tackles for a loss (11.5), and total sacks (8) while amassing 35 total tackles, a forced fumble, and a blocked kick for the Bison last year. With his measurables, Miles could be kicked outside to defensive end on the next level.

Other Players to Watch: RB Eden James (Howard), RB Kevon King (Norfolk State), LB Erick Hunter (Morgan State), DB Malcom Reed (North Carolina Central)”

HBCU FCS National Team of the Week

Howard (34-7 win over Hampton)

In the 100th “Battle of the Real HU,” Howard led 34-0 midway through the fourth quarter while ending an eight-game losing streak against rival Hampton. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference squad had nearly 36 minutes of possession, with Travis Kerney fronting a 274-yard ground attack with 113 yards and the first two touchdowns of his career. Safety Kedrick Green (eight tackles, 44-yard interception return) and linebacker Jaquavion Smith (seven tackles, two sacks, forced fumble) were defensive standouts for coach Larry Scott.

FROM FCS CENTRAL:

Loser: Howard

Howard had a chance to make a statement this weekend, dominating Richmond for nearly the entire game before a late collapse changed everything. The Spiders escaped with a 13-12 win, despite only generating 152 yards of total offense, averaging an abysmal 3.5 yards per play. The Bison held the ball for over 42 minutes of the game but ultimately lost due to poor execution and play-calling.

Richmond's defense forced a turnover on back-to-back drives, which led to one-play scoring drives for the Spiders. Running back Isaiah Dawson exploded for a 42-yard touchdown to cut the lead to five, while Aziz Foster-Powell found the end zone less than a minute later to take the lead. To make things even worse, Howard missed a potential game-winning 38-yard field goal with 3:07 remaining. The box score rarely tells the full story, and this game is a prime example as Richmond found a way to secure the win despite being outplayed for over three quarters.

Thanks, LU. Our little board is very active, yours is rather dull.

The only stat that matters is the final score
