VS Dayton March 3

Final home game of the season. Playing a team with a five game winning streak. We just lost on the road to a bad team. I know it’s March madness time but I don’t see us winning this game. The rumor is Anthony Grant has to win this year. Or Dayton might move on with someone else.

Prediction Dayton 65 Richmond 61.

Grant has Dayton in the top four of the league every year and he's going to get fired, and loss of people think he should. Mooney has us in the bottom four more often than the top four and he's as comfortable as can be, because lots of people think he's trying hard. Make it make sense.

Leaving Mooney out of it, if you were a Dayton fan, would you be happy paying a guy 2.5 million with a 5 million NIL if he gave you 2 dance teams and 1 dance win 9 years? Just because it doesn't make sense for us doesn’t mean it doesn't make sense for them.

No, I wouldn't. I just think it illustrates the incredible difference, even in relative terms, between one university most likely holding a coach accountable for "underperformance" while another just ho-hums along with zero accountability at all. And the fact we're both in the same league, apparently with VASTLY different ideas of what that looks like, is even more sobering.

I hear u. Although it could be argued Dayton has not been that dramatically different with Grant. I mean, this is year 9 and he has 1 dance win. That seems like they are being incredibly patient, and not holding someone accountable.

Not sure where this fits into the picture of the discussion, but in 2020 Dayton under Grant was #3 in the country and had an 18-0 A10 record before the A10 tournament and ultimately NCAA tournament were cancelled due to COVID. They were going to be a 1 seed. They had a legitimate shot at winning a national championship which is crazy to think nowadays.

No doubt. As bad as I felt for our guys that year when we were 24-7 and dance bound, you had to feel really bad for them. They were legit. And, sure, they have done a lot better than we have since then, but the bottom line is they, just like us, have had one dance appearance and one dance win post 2020.

Yes that was a wild year. Dayton and SDSU were top 5 in the nation and had great and super clutch teams. Could have legitimately had two mid major final 4 teams.

I do wonder if Grant is granted a little more leeway because he lost his daughter. What a tragedy.

Meanwhile the Mooneys crying because they had a billboard up on 95 for ten minutes.

That’s true. Another wild stat is that Dayton has not won the A10 tournament since 2003. Since 2010, they’ve won the regular season 3 times.

And unlike us, Dayton was not able to bring its 2020 roster back for even one more year, much less two. Toppin went pro and that was that.

But the other thing about Grant is that he's finished first, second or third in the A10 every year but two at Dayton -- his first (month place) and the year after Covid (seventh). They've been right there in contention every year.

I didn’t find myself talking about Anthony Grant and Dayton this morning but since there’s really nothing exciting to talk about with our team, here are my thoughts.

In 9 years with Dayton here are his stats.
- Total winning percentage 68%
- A10 winning percentage 70%
- Seasons with 20+ wins (I am including this season since he will meet that mark): 7
- Seasons finishing 3rd or better in A10 regular seasons (I’ll include this year as well): 7
- A10 regular season titles: 1
- A10 tournament titles: 0
- NCAA appearances: 1 (went to R32)
- And again, in 2020 had a team that was 29-2, going to be a 1 seed in NCAA, and #3 team in the country.
- National Coach of the year.

They did all of this playing a tough schedule. They recruited guys who are playing in the NBA now.

Would I donate my right pinky toe for Richmond to have this success the past 9 years? Yes. Not to rehash old debates but that’s why I don’t think NCAA appearances are the end all be all criteria of a coaches success. He only made one NCAA tournament and won one regular season title but there is sustained success against good competition. I think we all would have loved to have this stretch. He has his team in contention every year.

Do Dayton fans have every right to be upset with the lack of NCAAs given the resources and expectations of the program? Absolutely. They hold their team to high standards. They have an amazing arena, pay NIL like a Big East team, and have a deep history and culture of hoops.

The really sad part is that we could be like Dayton. They’re upset that their former national coach of the year only has them in 3rd place in the A10 for the 7th time out of 9 years. Meanwhile we’re all begging our administration to have a new coach so we aren’t in the bottom 4 of the A10 like we’ve been 3 times in the last 4 years. We are literally in the same league and the mentality we have with them could not be further apart. There was a time in 2013 or so where we were in discussions to be invited to the Big East along with Dayton. Now that’s just a dream.

But that would upset the six little old ladies on Facebook who love everything about him and probably would prompt Hardt to give him an extension out of sympathy.
Yep Hardt's sleepy a$$ has us in a catch22. Publicly show disapproval and he will extend him based on the 10 real fans backlash and support.
Say nothing and he will take it as our stamp of approval and extend in a few years again. I bet he loves just screwing over us fake fans. Oh well.

Prime, am I imagining it, or did someone on this board say there actually were some Fire Mooney chants at one of the games this season. Maybe not en masse but some smaller groups?

I'd recommend against it. I trust you realize his wife, kids, cousins, and recruits will be there. How low can you go!
Yes, never speak your mind. Instead, just politely whisper to an usher that perhaps, if someone sees fit, that you might possibly prefer there to be a new coach next season, maybe. That will have a much better impact.
