Spiders Sound Off Podcast

Careful, if you speak the truth on the mens side you will be cancelled by the little man in the Mooney.

Great to hear that our big 3 are firing on all cylinders. Also nice to hear that Newell, Wright, and Persichetti stepping up. There always seems to be players who step up and play big roles who are freshmen/sophomores every year.

For me, I think the difference between us being a great team or a nationally ranked team with potential for record breaking year, is the play of our PFs. Roussell likes to spread the floor and have our PFs shoot 3s like Budnik and Doogan. Who is going to fill Budnik’s role this year? Also, all the top teams in the country have tall, strong players who can score in the post and rebound. Do we have the size and physicality to match that against the Texas, UCLA’s of the world?

Exciting year ahead.

Couldn’t use the stopwatch in the car, but the coverage was either even or slightly favoring the women’s schedule. Nice work guys.

On the Net calculation of efficiency, I wonder what effect it would have if the last few minutes of the games were excluded. Seems to me that you could make a case that the end of the game was not representative of the whole especially in the case of a blow out win, but in other cases as well. Maybe one of the stat heads has tried this already and perhaps my gut feeling is wrong.

I was a little distracted listening. And I have poor listening skills to begin with.

Seemed like there was a case being made and numbers formulated that our schedule was not that bad because other A10 teams even though have some good games, their bad games suck worse than our bad games. I don't know but I would trade for those schedules. This is the worst schedule imaginable. Wish someone would pull Hardt or moon into an interview and lay it out in real terms.

Yes there was a bit of fun with numbers to compare the “average” of all the OOC scheduled teams to show that no one has a “great” average number. The teams with the best OOC games also have bad ones that bring the “average” closer to UR’s average and some averages are worse. I guess the point is that rarely is there a strong OOC schedule, which is actually more by design anyway. No one wants to have all tough OOC games (although Duke is close), but no one should want no tough games either. Nearly all teams are looking for something in the middle as “just right”.

I think the barbell strategy of playing 6 top 100 teams and 6 of the bottom 50 teams in the NCAA is probably the right one. As long as you blow out the bottom 50 teams.

The problem with playing everyone between 120 - 250 is you can't get a good win, and on an off night you can pick up a bad loss.

Back to the Ladies this week with 2 recent Spider grads Addie and Katie in the interview format. Liked getting insight from the ladies on the growth of the Spider program. Another great job by the participants and looking forward to the conclusion next week.

Great podcast! Addie and Katie were great guests and loved hearing their stories about why they chose UR and the beginning years. A lot of growth with the team from when they were freshmen to seniors. The loyalty to stay and build a legacy and reach new heights is not too common nowadays and the success last year can be a real turning point for our program. Looking forward to part 2!

Walz a consensus top-20 player among the rankings, Johnston and Tyne also mentioned.

I wonder if we'll get a player on any of the preseason all conference teams. Last year was the first time in 10+ years we didn't have one (IIRC) and we all know how that worked out for us...
Haven't listened yet but think these guys do a good job with their pre-season commentary

Current schedule:

10.6.25 is Episode 14 and will cover off the A10 Media Event in Pitt as well as our takes on preseason coached polls and all conference player announcements

10.13.25 is Episode 15 and talks practice updates on the men's side (after taking in another one) complete with new player observations and 1 hot take you won't want to miss.

Episode 14 - Lager vs IPA. I’m with Tom on this one and put a vote on team lager. As far as the 10 for preseason ranking, it is a low ranking and hopefully it motivates the team. It definitely does show that the perception is that the team is not good this year and hopefully they can “exceed expectations” again like two years ago when the Spiders were picked 11 and finished 1. I feel that they have to finish in top 5 to show that program is a true contender.

Didn't listen yet, but I am a fan of the lighter IPA's - like New England based Sea Hag, has a 4.5% Wee Hag, get the taste without too bitter and filling.

haven't found an IPA that I can stomach. why the freaking grapefruit?

it's October. let me give my stongest recommendaton to Jack's Abbey Copper Legend.
