Spiders Sound Off Podcast

Unfortunately, couldn't find any box score information. Best I could find was the date and score of that game. Was played 11/28/1988 in Atlanta. Richmond beat Fordham 61-55.

Was also able to find Bryant and Radice 1988-1989 respective season stats:

Pam Bryant - 17.5 PPG, 2.9 AST: https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/pam-bryant-1.html

Jeanine Radice - 24.8 PPG, 3.4 AST: https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/jeanine-radice-1.html

Excellent podcast and thanks for doing this! I have enjoyed listening every week. The intro is fantastic.

Not a criticism but more my own perspective/discussion piece I wanted to bring up. You started off the series talking about how winning is the most important metric for a coach (I agree). The third episode, after meeting with Mooney, I noticed how it was brought up that winning isn’t everything. There is the game of life and the important of players going into college to develop into human beings. I 100% agree that there are things more important in life than basketball like you alluded to.

However, the context of this - at least how I interpret it - is Mooney as a coach. Him running a good program and recruiting good kids should be the expectation. In my opinion, winning basketball games should be the only metric he is based on. He is ultimately their basketball coach at the end of the day and not their life coach or parent.

I mention this nuance because I think the administration has factored in other non-basketball related factors as well when keeping him as a coach, which is wonderful to have in a coach, but should not be the key metric in whether a coach is retained or not.

Anyway, I don’t mean much by this but wanted to share my 2 cents. Glad you’re on the forum as well to further engage in conversation from the podcast!

As far as other topics to discuss. Would love to hear your thoughts on the following:
- I know you’re planning on focusing on the women’s team but hearing from Roussell about expectations, his thoughts on program. Interview with players would be nice too
- Men’s and women’s basketball schedule (women will be in Cancun with excellent MTE)
- I don’t know if you’re able to meet with others from administration like you did with Mooney, but would love to learn more about how UR is going to handle the house settlement. If they are going to create perks and fan interactions with donors to help incentivize/encourage people to give.
- Lastly, perhaps mentioning this new message board on your podcast to help spread the word. I’m sure there’s a lot of overlap between listeners and members in this forum already, but perhaps the outreach can help bring a few more people who aren’t aware of the new forum yet.
Good point about the message board mention on the podcast.

I only found it a couple of days ago by Googling "Richmond Spiders Message Board" in hopes of finding a
way to the old one.

Good job as usual guys. Glad you are finding things to talk about during the Summer slowdown as the players get their break before school begins.

I am not buying the narrative that a conference like the A10 has some sort of advantage over the P5 schools when it comes to NIL spend. First of all, a school has to raise 20 million to spend 20 million, something that few mid-major schools can achieve. Second, not all the P5 schools are going to spend the same percentages on the various sports. UNC just announced it is planning on spending 7M on its Men’s basketball program for instance, so that is nearly double the 3-4M figure that had been thought to be the ceiling for teams with football. Last, let’s not kid ourselves and think that there is an actual cap on spending. The only cap is on what the schools themselves can spend. Outside NIL money is not capped, it just has to be for legitimate business purposes and of course that is supposed to be managed by the clearinghouse. The clearinghouse stance was initially rather tough and said that collectives would not pass the business test and that was quickly challenged. So we have yet to see what the spending totals will be in this new world. Of course, like you said there will only be partial information that will come out from the public institution side, but my guess is the spending will still be closer to this year’s crazy spending than say a 5M cap.

Then there’s the scheduling issue. I can’t imagine the P5 are going to suddenly decide to play a school loaded with talent that they were outbid on. The deck is still stacked against the mid-majors.

You make some valid points. It will be interesting to see. The good news is I don't think it will be 4M versus 20M for basketball. I would be ok w 4M vs 7M(UNC) for instance. And what if we dedicate a bigger chunk to the Women's team? Could the Ladies continued success help push the men's team forward, UConn style.... or am I just dreaming?

For me, the Kansas episode as told through the eyes of one of the players who lived it, is reason enough for doing the podcast. These are just great Richmond basketball stories that need to be preserved for us fans to enjoy.

I recall Big Al went out to the game and during his afternoon show was at a KU hang out interviewing KU students who wondered who the heck he was. One of my favorite Big Al moments. Oh for the excitement of those Beilein and first two Ole Ger years.

Got around to listening to the last 2 episodes. Great listen! That’s awesome that you are already expanding with guests. I’ve really enjoyed the behind the scenes perspective so far of one of UR’s biggest wins ever. I’m looking forward to the episode that looks into both the men’s and women’s schedules.

There is a little known clause in Title IX that calls for equal coverage of Men’s and Women’s schedules in a single podcast. Due to this restriction, the guys are going to have to have a dedicated one for the women’s schedule and only mention the men’s in the episode notes. /s

Happy Labor Day Spider fans. No commute to work today, but still listened to the guys at my normal time this morning. Deep secret from Kansas revealed. Skrocki set a high bar as a guest on the Sound Off.

Looking forward to listening to this later! Thinking of my post in the Jim Merritt thread, would love if he could be a guest on your podcast to learn more about his role and his vision for men’s and women’s basketball.
