Walk-on
Greetings to everyone in Spider Nation. I'm a UConn fan of over 30 years. In that time, I've seen a lot of guys transfer out, but I was the most disappointed when Roumoglou left. He showed flashes at UConn, but only got garbage minutes.

I've been watching as many Richmond games as I can this season and last, hoping to see him have a breakout year. I know his 3 point shooting hasn't been very good at Richmond, but the potential is there; he virtually never missed in shootarounds while at UConn. Obviously that doesn't mean a ton, since there was nobody defending and no real pressure.

Still, I think his shot has potential to come around. When he was with us, his shot was particularly effective when he took it from the top of the key, in motion.

I'd like to see him drive the lane more. He's a good finisher at the rim. He doesn't draw many fouls - his FT attempted rate is astoundingly low. He has a good handle though and I think more aggressive cutting and driving is something he is capable of.

At 6'8" and with good ball handling, rebounding, and shot blocking abilities, you can plug him in at almost any position, depending on the team you're going up against. His defense has come a long way, but he still bites on the pump fake a little too easily.

Overall, I think you guys landed a great transfer with him and I really hope he turns the corner soon. I (mostly) like the way Mooney is using his bench this season and you guys are off to a pretty solid start. I don't have Flo so I couldn't see last night's game, but it looks like AP had his best showing of the season so far, judging by the box score.

Good luck this year!

Roumoglou really struggled last year, but so did our entire team. This year he has been awesome on defense while being mostly a non-factor when it comes to scoring. Last night he had a season high 12 points. He has been our most effective rebounder this year and he usually is always on the right side of +/-

In our recent OT win over SIU he was an astounding +22 and that was with only 3 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. He added in a steal and two blocks and is always being a pest on the defensive side.

To me he seems like a great team player and the type you need on a winning team. He's not going to be the guy, nor should he be asked to. But great teams always have guys who play strong defense and put the team’s success before their own.

Maybe Mooney should hire someone like Luke Murray to be his x and o's guy on offense and vs a zone. But no, Mooney is mostly hiring Mooney guys that don't seem to have a ton of input or breath of knowledge.

I used to hate Hurley when he was at URI, but give him a ton of credit at Uconn for innovating and not accepting mediocrity. If he was. 55 he would jump off a bridge.

Me too but Hurley is a hell of a coach, very entertaining and good for the game. I think he has mellowed a bit too from his days at Rhody. Hurley has been very open with some of his mental health struggles. If you haven't watched the 30 for 30 on him, it is well done (as all the 30 for 30's are). He is so much more than the image he presents on the sideline.

And yeah, if he was at .55% winning, he would not be in coaching anymore. Polar opposite from Mooney in so many ways.

I wasn't sure about Hurley when we first got him, but I've been enjoying all of the crow sandwiches.

Thanks for making an appearance on our board. We had heard AP was a fan favorite at UConn and thus had high hopes for him, but he hasn’t turned out to be the player expected. He did have his best game as a Spider vs Elon this week, so perhaps his stroke has turned the corner.

Developmentally, AP is a sophomore. I'd be very excited to see what he could do with 2 more years of eligibility, or even one. Alas, he's a senior, and probably wishing he didn't burn his first year playing 19 minutes or whatever.
Yep, prior to last season, I was making the case that he would come in game ready after practicing vs top players for 2 seasons. But contrary to smans thought, game readiness and game play gets you ready for game play. Even with losing this entire off season to injury he seems to be more game ready and hopefully improving every game.

think I'm being misquoted here.
I'm ok with a redshirt for a kid who isn't going to play significant minutes. I'm all for that developmental year, lifting and practicing.
I'd never put a freshman in a game if I truly didn't think he'd get more than the 30 minutes AP played as a freshman (and 51 minutes as a soph). that's a waste of a year of eligibility. I don't think he got any more "game ready" for the following season by playing those few minutes vs just practicing.

it's a balancing act for a coach, but I'd always want to do what's best for the kid ... or at least give him my honest opinion and let him choose like we did with Robinson and McGlothin. the extra year of eligibility can be worth more financially to a kid than they'll ever make in a year playing ball ... outside of making the NBA.

It is kind of shocking to me that AP had a roster spot on a dominant two-time national championship team. Nothing against him, seems like an awesome kid from the interviews I have heard, but obviously nowhere near that level of talent.

I'm not sure if this was ever 100% confirmed, but I'm pretty sure he was a preferred walk-on at UConn. This was back when there was still a scholarship limit, so using a walk-on slot for a guy like him makes perfect sense.

never heard that. per UConn he was on scholarship.
"Roumoglou fills the last remaining open scholarship on the Huskies this season."

"Dan Hurley has once again gone the international route and added true freshman Apostolos Roumoglou to take up the final scholarship on the roster."

Thanks for sending. I was going off of this tweet last year from a CBB analyst I like, but seems like he was incorrect.

In Root's defense, if you ever saw him in the game, he got the same PWO type of treatment that a walkon would get when he was at UCONN - like celebrating making a shot of something.

i think AP is a solid player, whose shooting confidence got dented by a tough start last year. With our make up, injuries to one portal guard and another portal guard who couldn't play, he was thrust into a role he probably was not ready for. When you get P5 "bench warmer" transfers you never know who you're getting.... For example, GW's Rafael Castro. His numbers at Providence for 2 years were nothing. GW signing him barely made a ripple. But he thrived in his role and was probably ranked the #1 returning big man in A10.

Every team needs a guy to play D, rebound and from time to time, hit shots. If that is AP's role for the next 20 games, and he plays as well as he as the last 2-3 weeks, it will be a positive for us.
