The Worst Call Ever? - I Still Think So!

it was 2016 on The Reservation, the Spiders were rolling towards the Playoffs for a third consecutive year when tragedy struck twice...first star QB Kyle Lauletta suffered a terrible knee injury that would end his season...without an experienced backup QB our offense was extremely limited

but we had a spirited defense that was doing what it could to keep the Spiders in the ball game...this play happened and looked like it had changed the entire momentum of the game back to the Spiders...then tragedy struck again...the group of officials took the relatively new "targeting" call to a game changing level...reversing the outstanding play and outcome...

unfortunately Richmond's Justin Rubin will always be remembered as the victim of this very subjective call instead of the game changing hero he could have been...I wish I could find his comments on the call...

the loss probably cost the Spiders in the FCS Playoffs seedings and a possible home game versus having to travel out west...

don't get me wrong...I'm looking forward to the trip down to The Reservation Saturday...Cary Field is my second favorite place to watch a football game...but don't be surprised if the CAA crew working the game bakes up a little home cooking for The Tribe...remember the 2023 game when they received extra plays at the end of the game inside the 10 yard line before the Spiders finally prevailed?...

if you're headed to W-burg be prepared for anything and if you bought your tickets in the UR section bring your sunglasses, the seats are in the worst sun field I've experienced anywhere!

Go Spiders!

Get over it. You lost the game by 21 points.

The visitors area and student sections flipped this year. I believe it’s due to the renovated visitors locker room which is now below the new visitors section.

welcome to the board...that's probably good advice...my mother always told me I was hard headed!

that's call's the type of play that's hard to forget and just one of many in this magnificent rivalry...most of the plays I remember at Cary Field since my first visit in 1971 are more positive Richmond moments...but in a rivalry like this I don't want to forget... I want to remember!

it took the Spiders over 20 years to battle our way out of the whippings we annually took during Coach Laycock's prime years...every chance to win is important... with the all time record sitting at 66-64-5 after 135 meetings...

thanks for the update on the seating swap...I'm still hoping for a cloudy day with no rain...I'm surprised today's W&M students haven't complained, unless they enjoy working on their suntans in September and October!

Go Spiders!

ha! was this the same crew who worked the 2016 game?...I was at the opposite end of the stadium, too far away to see what really happened...but the irony of the Spiders beginning to assert themselves and all of sudden there's a targeting call? That's an amazing coincidence.

glad whoever made the call after the review was unbiased and clear thinking...anybody know who makes the review calls in the CAA, some one in the booth, or studio, or the referee on the field?

a great rivalry game once again...Cary Field almost always delivers a classic!

Speaking of 21 (a)- over the last 21 games, the Spiders are 15-6 in the rivalry. How many times in the last game did a W&M fan claim the refs blew a call? We are not the ones bemoaning our latest loss.

Speaking of 21 (b)- you do realize that you scored ONLY 21 POINTS in your latest loss to the Spiders. The Spiders just happened to score 28.

Speaking of 28- The Spiders beat you by 28 just last season, with the score being 28-0.

We want to eliminate all possibility that W&M would make the playoffs this year and every year.

I was at that 2016 game. Brutal momentum change with that targeting call. Some "interesting" calls at the end of this year's game as well. Our last kickoff that was not picked up by them (I didn't see the fair catch signal that the refs saw) and then we get a personal foul called against us during the ensuing scrum for the ball was again, interesting. Then we had a review for targeting for what seemed like a routine play and the final review for the spot that seemed clearly short on 4th and 18. No harm no foul with the result but those were some interesting calls on our last defensive possession.

Thanks City for the Recap. Ha! There were so many questionable calls and reviews my memory is not good enough to recall everything.

Considering it was Richmond (already left) and W&M ( leaving), I expect CAA Commish “Joe” had the bottom of the barrel CAA officiating crew assigned to the game, and it showed!

Now that Nova is leaving too, I wonder where “Joe” is hanging out on Saturday afternoons in the fall.

And the bogus Pass interference call in end zone against us, what about that?
