Fire Mooney

Gkiller, can u please post a list of potential replacements. in the miniscule chance we're to let Mooney go early or he would step down, I want to know all the coaches we missed on or didn't pursue

The spreadsheet is there. Many names still applicable. Hard to look at others we lost out on. Honestly after the last 2 year nonsensical extension I was so deflated I let it gather dust. So needs some updating. But Moon ain’t going anywhere unless there is a full court press from the alum & fanbase to Hallock & Hardt imo. But I’ll follow up with names regardless.

The funniest thing is that post doesn’t bother me in the least. Bet it doesn’t even get acknowledged by anyone in the administration at UR and we all know no one is going to ask for a comment either.
Part of me thinks that having Roussell as a coach was of one of the (I don’t want to say worst but can’t think of a better word to describe it) things that could’ve happened to Mooney coaching here. Yes there are differences between the men’s and women’s team, but there are a lot more similarities than differences. And it’s the closest comparison point we have. Roussell just dispels any sort of narrative the men’s team wants to push out.

“Scheduling is too hard for mid majors” - Not for our women’s team who set the tone with their expectations for 2-3 hears in a row now.

“Our NIL can’t compete with other A10 teams” - it’s certainly not an issue for our women’s team who have exceeded expectations and deserve more NIL. Women’s team is bringing in a top 100 recruit next year.

“It’s hard for high school recruits to get acclimated to college basketball. Takes time to learn the system” - Like clockwork, we always have high school recruits stepping up and playing a role each year with our women’s team. We have not had rebuilding years under Roussell only reloading.

“It’s hard for a small, academic focus school to make NCAAs frequently” - We are making a strong case for 3 NCAAs in a row this year. Have won 2 A10 regular season titles and A10 tournament title in a 3 year span.

“At least Mooney is a great guy and runs a clean program” - Roussell is a great guy too and also runs a clean program while also winning.

Then you see Roussell setting the tone with the interviews, demanding excellence. He pushes his players to be the best but does not push them too hard and knows how to bring out the best in his team. He energizes the fan base promoting the games on social media, was a catalyst for the very successful operation code red. It’s just the antithesis of our men’s basketball team right now

I like it 17. Good points. All the narrative about Mooney being so restricted because he "does things the right way" and it is "So HARD" have been some of the most frustrating things for us fake fans to put up with over the years. You are getting paid 1.5 million a year to win games. The good behavior and staying out of jail is a prerequisite. Not a deterrent to winning. Russell is basically the anti Mooney. Other than not getting arrested. That they have in common.

Maybe losing to a lot more schools than just Richmond was unacceptable. For the money they spend, they are terrible.
I think the timing of the AD choosing to fire her the next day after losing to Richmond for the 7th time in a row was to send a message about VCU’s expectations with this rivalry. Otherwise, there is no other reason why this couldn’t have waited until the season is over to let her go.
