Fire Mooney

Genuinely asking. Is there anything we can do as fans or no matter what it’s ultimately whatever Queally feels like doing at the end of the day?

I was never a fan of the billboard and definitely not advocating for something like that now, but it was a gesture nonetheless from fans to voice displeasure. There was also a petition started by an old poster here several years ago. I’m sure many fans have sent emails to the AD in the past too.

So honest question here, is there absolutely anything that can be done that even the AD has to recognize that this is a sinking ship?

To say it’s been disheartening seeing my beloved Spiders basketball program be in this shape is an understatement. If our AD doesn’t make the efforts to rectify this, and just hope next year will suddenly be better, I might just give up on this team and athletic department all together. That’s not something I thought I’d ever say.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but if memory serves, the petition was in 2022 prior to the A10 tourney/NCAA run. Rumor was Mooney was out if we had not made that run…

Are there any Mooney believers left, outside of those with inside access to the program? Sadly I feel our only hope is Mooney decides he doesn’t want to deal with NIL, portal, etc. and retires.

correct - just tonight reread my "petition" email to Pres Hallock tonight cc: Hardt in late Feb '22. Pres responded right away and then after I was at all 4 games in the miracle in DC, I responded and basically said "my bad" .. I will never forget the the insane joy I felt both in DC and seeing the Iowa win in Buffalo ... but we are back now to where most of us always felt we would be so so sadly

I think we have come to the point where he needs to recognize, like Mike Tomlin did, that it just isn't working anymore and it's time to do something else and the team knows it's time to blow it up and start all over. As the tv talking heads say "at some point you wake up and say, I don't need this anymore." Except they use some stronger language which I will not do because this is a family board.

Imagine feeling that way for 15 years.

I thought of something about our situation. We all know that PQ is very involved with the men’s basketball program. Let’s say for the sake of argument that he’s defending Mooney so much because he’s friends with him. If that were the case, wouldn't Mooney still want to be friends even if he weren’t the coach? Because if that’s not the case, and it’s conditional only on him being the coach, that doesn’t seem like true friendship to me. And even if PQ doesn’t care about true friendship and it was just to feel more connected to the program, couldn’t Queally just become “friends” with the next head coach?

I wrote an email to Hallock back then to, but never sent it as I decided that a new University President had much higher priorities than Men’s basketball. I may have to see if I kept any of my musings as I bet all of my concerns then are still valid today.

The last NCAA appearance was a great one as that team really did persevere through some challenging times and finally reached full potential in the A10 tournament and of course in a first round upset win. But as good as that season ended, I think most long time fans had serious doubts about what was next. The “plan” has seemed to be let’s hope for the best along with wait until next year. Kicking the can down the road is not a plan, just a delay tactic.

I’m sure all supporters of Men’s basketball from large donors, season ticket holders and at home enthusiasts would like specific expectations and actions taken when expectations are not met. However, UR has shown that it believes strong in keeping all such plans “private”. I think all a true UR sports fan can do is support the programs that are meeting all stated and unstated goals - lacrosse and Women’s basketball. Maybe if those programs got the support they deserve there would be revival in the other “mainstay” programs as well. I have no other ideas.

Not sure about the friendship angle. But PQ's benjamins give him plenty of access to the program and likely say so / control. The more $$$$, probably more control.

What kind of control does he want? Does he recruit the players? It’s giving Jerry Jones at the Cowboys vibes. PQ has done a lot to help it program and university which we should all be appreciative of, but if ego is getting in the way at this point, it’s only going to hurt our program long term.

Best guess is PQ:
- Likes Mooney and truly believes he is the guy for the job.

AND/OR

- Is worried a new coach will be hesitant to let him have the same level of access/control he currently has

It’s also possible that PQ opinion on Mooney has changed in the last two years and we just have yet to see any action. But still feel it’s unlikely he would want to help with a buyout if he truly has any belief in Mooney. We will see

I echo Eight Legger's post.

You ask "what kind of control does he want". I doubt recruiting, but I have to wonder if he has control or heavy input into hiring & retention. That's speculation, but it would really nice to be a fly on the wall and observe the dynamics behind the scene on these types of issues.

No doubt he's done a lot from a financial standpoint, but if extensions and retention in MBB is controlled or significant input by him, then we might just be seeing the results of that.

I don’t envision that PQ has any meaningful input on the mechanics of the program, he’s not making suggestions on recruitment, playing time or anything of that sort. I’m sure he has influence on who gets paid. I also imagine he has influence on who is on staff if he wanted to.

There’s no scenario where he wouldn’t have influence with a new HC if he’s a big money guy.

I personally would draw the line where we’re at right now. But I’m not tossing big bucks at the program.

At most programs you worry about influential boosters being too involved and too impatient. We are the only program where all the decision makers seem content to be content to be comfortable. Maybe there are rumblings behind the scenes but history tells us that the UR powerbrokers are waiting/hoping for Mooney to produce anything that they can hang onto rather than confront the obvious.
