Chris Mooney (9-29) - worst rivalry coach of all time

Longwood, Radford, VMI, W/M, Delaware, Oral Roberts, Jax State, Charleston Southern, Furman, Elon, La Tech, FGCU. Im sure I missing some. What are we doing?

2018 Delaware, GMU at home, Fordham away
2019 Wyoming neutral, Hampton, Longwood, ORU, LaSalle, Duquesne all at home
2021 St Joe, LaSalle at home
2022 St Joe at home
2023 WM away, SBU home
2025 Marist at home
2026 Charleston Southern at home

Left out a few borderline cases…
Like at ORU 2017 or at WM 2025

That is most of the Q4 losses.
Jacksonville ST ended up a bit better than expected but still lower middle…

We lost to them a couple times early in Mooney's tenure, but it's been a while.

Wasn't one of those where they had the Holmes twins and the one took crucial free throws down the stretch that were supposed to be taken by the other one, but the officials didn't catch it?

I think The first one was when Reggie Williams banked in multiple halfcourt shots. Second one was the Holmes Twins, when they won 20 games including Kentucky.

R u thinking of the Jason Conley game? Beilein era. I was at the game & knew under JB so I had to look up. The Conley shot was game winner. He was nuts that game. But he led nation in scoring as freshman also nuts. I can’t speak to Reggie Williams game but it would be hard to beat the Conley game.

There was a VMI game right before Christmas when VMI beat Beilein early in his tenure. The story told me was that JB subsequently was discussing the game with and asked Hal Nunnally (RMC coach) for advice and Hal told him to keep the ball in play after shots if you couldn’t cleanly rebound. All Beilein games after that saw a lot of rebounds being tapped to the outside.

Yes, that is the one I was looking for. More time has passed than I think on everything I remember.

Not sure where to put this but I like keeping this thread going. Did anyone read todays JOC article? I used to get RTD stories but not anymore…it was titled “Chris Mooney charts UR accountability course to A-10 relevance after down years”

I had to laugh because only 7 weeks ago JOC wrote this one “Chris Mooney sighted return path to UR respectability in March, then executed” linked here…

Whoopsie John. He did a victory lap article for Moon 7 weeks ago. Not even close. Now JOC running it back for him with a different angle to buy more time? Come on.

They basically have a symbiotic relationship. We’ve come to expect no real questions and answers except on rare occasions.

The whole article was a bunch of nothing. Just generic statements of instilling things to be in the margins, repetition of practice, culture, and saying coaches need to demand that. Bunch of buzz words that mean nothing. What the heck has he been doing the last 2 years then? We know our practices are soft. Burton pretty much said that indirectly when he talked about the physicality of Villanova practices when he got there.

Already laying the groundwork on next year. Basically laying to rest even a slight hope that the university would having a coach change. This program is a sinking ship and as captain, Mooney is determined to go down with it. I honestly think that next season will be the least excited I’ll be for a basketball season ever.

The article did bring one thing indirectly to light. The Spiders have never been this bad in conference since the very beginning of Mooney’s tenure. So the team has gone full circle. The only thing “saving” Mooney is the unexpected tie for regular season champion in 23-24, which of course was followed by an early exit in the A10 tournament. The fool’s gold year when it appeared that Mooney and Co had a good grasp on the portal. Dream on.

There's absolutely no possible way to rationally justify finishing in the bottom four of the A10 two years in a row with a coach in his 20th and 21st seasons. NONE. Take away everything else, and that alone would be enough reason for 95% of programs in the country to fire him.

Yeah I’ve said that for a long time & had that debate with old spiderstudent17 not new & improved spider17. Shouldn’t u have higher expectations for a 21-year coach? U should but we don’t. We get nothing out of that longevity. Not even 21-year connections for scheduling.

I am enjoying the new and improved 17 posts :). After watching lack of basketball talent last two years I am fully on board with his NIL strategy to load up on 2 studs. Still not sure why the school can't go all in on NIL? I get we have an effed up relationship with PQ's Bromance with moon wrecking the other big donors. But can't the school kick in big bucks under the new ruling. Someone send the decision makers the uptick in applications associated with going to a sweet 16. I feel bad for section 9's guy Merritt. Tough job.

Read the article this morning. It's basically just a bunch of recycled Mooney's quotes of how hard it everything is in the changing landscape and basically initimated that he and his staff will be taking an extended vacay in March since the portal does not open until after the Championship game this year.

But the overall gist I read from the article is that Mooney fully intends to be back next year, he ain't retiring and it doesn't feel as if he feels any pressure that he might be let go.

Agree. I read it too this morning. Another article of nothing but fluff. Could have saved space for something more informative.
