Chris Mooney (9-29) - worst rivalry coach of all time

Don't worry GK, the losing is all part of the mooney de-emphasis game. If not already, another 3 to 4 years of losing and their will be no rivalry. Just like only mention of winningest coach and not losingest, he will erase this title of worst rivalry coach by removing the rival. He is probably trying to figure out how to JMU them off the schedule now.

No need to wait. We already know that the “rent a player” environment means the players don’t have any idea what a crosstown rival means. The student section was still 40% empty and a VCU student was in the front row of the section in full gear. And finally, which is good news as well as bad, the VCU fans didn’t even buy up all the available tickets in the RC to totally embarrass the University.

Mooney deserves the Nobel Peace prize for college basketball.

The rivalry is dead

I see Beilein was 6-3 against VCU, losses coming by 3, 7 and 10 points. Three of the wins were by 10 plus points. But where oh where would we find a coach as good as Mooney?

I’d take 73 year old John Beilein right now.

Vcu is 46 in both NET & kenpom. Idk if they’ll get at large but they r very close. But I know this we had 2 opportunities to kill those chances - yet again - and whiffed. We play an outsized role in VCU success and ncaa appearances. It’s amazing…at little ol’ Richmond.

Chris Mooney: doing more for VCU than he does for U of R.

It’s really not hyperbole it’s sadly accurate. And we pay him millions for it.

If VCU does get an at large it's because they scheduled a real OOC slate:

NC State, Vanderbilt, Utah St. New Mexico, S. Florida (1st in American), VaTech. - those are 6 good games. They only went 9-4 OOC (4-2 against those mentioned) which could keep them out, but have rounded into winning form against a suspect A10. But they gave themselves a shot at it.

If they win out 5-0 in A10 including @SLU, they are basically in, IMO. Anything else and basically out IMO. It's a very black and white scenario for them as I don't think wins against against their other 4 opponents (non SLU) move the needle, but losing to any of these 5 teams is a crusher to their hopes (including SLU bc they need a great win on their resume and a loss exposes them as not a tourney team.)

It's a fairly tough slate overall - GW, GMU, @SLU, @UD - so my money is on 3-2 and not in real consideration. (i.e. fake "next 4 out" team that is not really a threat to make it and realistically has to win A10 tourney.)

Mason, GW and Dayton have all proven to be huge fakes. But all probably have talent comparable to VCU so they could lose one of those 3.

That's what Queally wanted.
If that was the case, why has he bothered supporting MBB so much? I think his intent is to promote bball but his involvement in NIL and with CM is perhaps having the opposite effect.

This is a case where we should welcome his money but perhaps not his influence? Hard to separate those two things.

So after last night is it 9-30? If 9-29 then winning pct = 23.7. If 9-30 then winning pct = 23. Not statistically much different & either way so unacceptable. But the few enablers still found positives last night.

This season has now fallen below the 55% threshold, so I expect 3-2 rest of the way, 17-14 overall.

Amazing considering the OOC schedule was minimum 10 guaranteed wins. I would quote the movie Office Space here about doing the minimum with pieces of flair, but it's too apt a comparison to the state of this program.

Again, as long as the benefactors are satisfied, nothing will change. It's sad, because we are in a Bill Dooley situation, but we'll never fire him. Mooney is playing us.

Still vividly remember my first UR @ VCU game in 2001, kicking their ass on senior night, and us cutting down the nets at their arena. And when Michigan smacked VCU in the NCAAs JB saying that he still doesn't like them. Coutner that with, "its just another game" mentality we have now pre game followed by the narrative how hard we compete and it shows how toothless we have become as a program.

We will never have the upperhand in this rivalry so long as its "just another game"

I had some past correspondence with Pres Hallock on that topic. And I’m paraphrasing but his response was, sadly, exactly that…it’s just another game.

I encourage everyone to express their thoughts on Mooney & state of our program to him however.

there is positive news

This result improves Mooney’s average margin of defeat agains vcu

Think about that

Worst rivalry coach of all time

The interns are off on Presidents Day. But I can even run some quick numbers. We've lost 7 of 8 to VCU and 4 straight. That won't surprise anyone.

But in our last 8 losses our average margin of defeat - home & away - is 17 points. The closest margin was this year's game at VCU. 8 pts. Where we never led the game once and never threatened.

17 pts. Average defeat over last 8 losses. 1 game under 10. It's mind boggling

I get your point but think any correspondence to those in charge (ex - H, H, and Q) would be a waste of time. Setting aside that Hallock is new kid on the block, he should know history. The other 2 are responsible enablers. I have zero confidence in any of them and view their decision making as playing in a sandbox.
