Chris Mooney (9-28) - worst rivalry coach of all time

And then this comes out...

"You've got to beat Richmond"

Lol has Mooney said anything close to this in 21 years? Martelli says it b4 he's even played us. I realize it gets harder for Moon to say something when he hets his expired milk money stolen so often. Heck why not try it, his current way of motivating the team for this game stinks.

While this game won't help our NCAA chances it could kill VCUs. This doesn't look to be strongest of vcu teams but I won't count them out of going on a big run. Their NET is 54 because they played a good schedule but a loss to us at home is a dagger....which means we got no shot
A lot of what has shifted my perspective more this past year isn’t just the poor trajectory our men’s team has had that I’ve alluded to in several other posts, it’s the juxtaposition between Mooney and Roussell.

Roussell has made similar statements in pressers that winning vs. VCU is a priority and definitely never losing to them at home. He has great social media presence to advocate for his team and was a big catalyst for the operation code red against VCU that resulted in the largest WBB attendance in 25 years. He has set his expectations of this program high while being humble and not exhibiting hubris. He wants to challenge the team and has a schedule that shows for it. Roussell also shows that one can build a program primarily with high school recruits and fill in missing pieces with transfers. We’ve had no “rebuild year” the last 4 years under him.

So seeing this just shows that it can be done at Richmond. In fact Roussell is exceeding expectations which is why he’s such a special coach. Then you see recent A10 coaches like Ryan Odom at VCU, Tony Skinn at George Mason, or Josh Schertz at SLU who came to the A10 and have had quick turnaround of their programs and can’t help think to yourself that those coaches would have definitely come to UR too if we offered.

Mooney: That sucker can coach ball.

Gkiller, tell the truth, did my Giselle reference bring you out of message board retirement? Mooney can't dribble and rebound for the guys can he?

In all fairness the men's and women's games are not the same, but I agree with the majority of your points.

Out of curiosity what distinguishable aspect of the men’s and women’s games are not the same in which Mooney and Roussell shouldn’t be compared? I’ve heard this from a friend of mine that I had this discussion with recently and curious to hear your point of view.

I understand there’s a lot of difference between men’s and women’s basketball but I’m comparing the relative differences to the respective sport. Roussell with the rest of women’s basketball and Mooney with the rest of men’s basketball.

These days, the A10 women's conference is actually better/tougher than the men's. It got multiple teams into the NCAAs last year, for starters.

I think there are significant differences in the game driven in part by the amount of money that goes into the men’s game specifically. That alone creates substantial differences in NIL, recruiting, coaching quality/disparity, and ultimately expectations.

But perhaps to your point, there’s no reason you can’t compare CM to Roussell, particularly if the school is investing and setting expectations proportionately for each.

It’s pretty undeniable that Roussell is a horse you want to back.

You hit the nail on the head with what I was getting at between Roussell and Mooney. Of course there are differences in NIL, media exposure, etc. but it is all relative. Mooney is getting more in NIL/House Settlement than Roussell is. Our men's team gets more media exposure locally and nationally than the women's team does. So it is proportional, just like you said and Roussell is clearly doing the better job compared to Mooney with respect to their own programs.

That's almost why I am nearing having the mindset of going all in on women's basketball and men's lacrosse. Imagine we gave those 2 programs men's basketball levels of revenue. We could be consistently a top 25 team in women's basketball and legitimate national title contenders in men's lacrosse.

There was a video posted on the MLax thread about our men's lacrosse team from a popular lacrosse Youtube channel. At one point, one of the players references how Hallock was talking to the team and told them we are a lacrosse school. I have to agree with Hallock with that statement at this point. Also in that video, when they gave a tour of the Robins Center, one of the lacrosse players gave a shoutout to the women's basketball team and nothing about the men's team. People notice these things which is why we are having great crowds for women's basketball games (again relatively speaking. We are #1 in A10 for attendance in WBB) and why we will have great crowds come out to the lax home games. Meanwhile, our MBB attendance is declining for the 4th year in a row.

I'd say we are legitimate national title contenders in lacrosse right now, so imagine what we could do with MBB levels of NIL money...
We would do nothing with Mooney as coach no matter how much NOL money we toss around. Spend it on a real damn coach. What is it that many of you do not see??? Stop giving Mooney any money. Its a waste. Give it to the freaking golf team. Maybe Richmond will get a future PGA star.

You are only saying that because Mooney is so pathetic and has destroyed mens hopps. Neither of those sports would generate a 10th of national attention or alumni passion, even with great success, as a consistently good MBB program contending for NCAA regularly, which UR could do with the resources it has… without Mooney of course, and a qualified coach.

Agreed, I was saying spend the MBB money on lacrosse.

Serious question. Who decides whether game is played. Let's say the roads are still slick and Richmond doesn't feel comfortable traveling but VCU wants to play and refs are in town. Does UR have to play or can Richmond force game to be postponed?

If postponed can Richmond decide the new schedule doesn't work or is it all forced by league?
There is no scenario I can imagine that we can’t get 6 miles down the road in time for this game. You can walk there in theory.

Different story if you need to get a bus or plane to a game I’m sure.
