Chris Mooney (9-28) - worst rivalry coach of all time

I have not seen anyone come up with one comparable rivalry coach yet?

Maybe the Washington Generals coach. But we are trending to the point that no one considers it a rivalry. So I guess that may be the strategy that saves moon from the distinction??
I think Dayton has replaced us as VCU's primary rival.

Bruce Weber was 3-19 against Kansas.

What’s crazy is in 21 years Mooney has never been directly asked about his VCU record. It’s true I’ve followed. Never is his record ever brought up in a question. Never why isn’t this a real rivalry. Never bringing up our losses r so bad (we regularly get blown out too). Never why do u lose this game so often.

These r not disrespectful questions they r all normal questions a coach gets about rivalries.

His questions r always why does vcu present a challenge. What do they do well. Same questions. Nothing changes. Except his record getting worse.

Ha, was just thinking the same thing. But if I recall, the one time JOC actually asked a pointed question to moon he got super pissy. So in the vein that no hard questions are asked, no one would ask about vcu.

I can picture the answer, here's my best pre-enactment of it:

"Well, you know, VCU is a great program. They have a lot of success against a lot of teams. (pained smile)" Then he'll talk about the specific game he just lost and how they competed, but didn't execute in a few key situations, had a couple guys out of position on defense and how VCU made certain plays.

Never once with the two thoughts intersect, that VCU and its coaches regularly are better, their systems more successful, their preparations more useful for generating a victory. How their guys mostly execute in key situations, don't have guys out of position on defense and make certain key plays. That he is describing why VCU has massively left UR in its dust the last decade.

100% that would be the answer. Except most teams don't play VCU twice a year every year like we do, and none are crosstown rivals. Just a complete lack of awareness (head in the sand) and lack of accountability. Makes it more infuriating bc I do believe that would be their answer.

They think it's just a couple games (sometimes 3) each year. Not realizing those games play a larger role in success of lackthereof of both programs. There is zero doubt if we did better in these games not even 50/50, say just a reasonable ~40% VCU would undoubtedly have less NCAAs and we'd have more. Conservatively + 2 and -2 each way.

what's remarkable is if u told someone how often we get dominated vs. our crosstwon rival and that the same coach was here for 21 years, virtually anyone would say...well he must be really killing it outside of that game....nope 3 for 20 making NCAA.

The only way we lose tomorrow is if VCU plays their worst game of the season. This VCU team is very pedestrian compared to past VCU squad but Martelli in his first year still put together a better roster than Mooney in his 21st year and we all know how Mooney does at VCU. Wish we could save the gas money of the trip but the show must go on.

And then this comes out...

"You've got to beat Richmond"

Lol has Mooney said anything close to this in 21 years? Martelli says it b4 he's even played us. I realize it gets harder for Moon to say something when he hets his expired milk money stolen so often. Heck why not try it, his current way of motivating the team for this game stinks.

While this game won't help our NCAA chances it could kill VCUs. This doesn't look to be strongest of vcu teams but I won't count them out of going on a big run. Their NET is 54 because they played a good schedule but a loss to us at home is a dagger....which means we got no shot
