Yep, saw an interview with Dutcher from SDSU before the season and he specifically called out that they were having to compete with Yale and Harvard on NIL. But it may be a chasm between Yale and Columbia.

Was announced today that the B10 made $70m from mens/womens NCAA tourneys. Just the tournament participations for league members.

athletes generate revenue. professors don't. people have complained forever that actors make so much money and high school teachers don't.

At research institutions, professors generate a ton of revenue through grants, where the university generally gets a 15%ish cut, and through patent deals for things developed in labs at the university.

These institutions are getting hundreds of millions of dollars through grants and patents etc. for top professors

does a professor who generates "a ton of revenue" get paid more than a typical professor since there's probably more demand for such a high revenue producer, or does he just say you're welcome and get a regular salary?

I dont think has anything to do with academics, think he was making the point that even the IVY's are locked and loaded with NIL, ot at least the top ones. SDSU did have a freshman top 100 type recruit this year that originally committed to Harvard.

I started my career on the expense side of a company. I realized pretty quickly if I ever wanted to get paid I better get on the revenue producing side.

With Mojo coming back, I’ll reiterate here that Jamie Kaiser has to be our number 1 priority right now. Would be perfect at the 3, maybe 4 spot for us. Produced well offensively at Butler and was also good defensively. We can’t just think about offense this portal. Have to prioritize players who are good defensively too.

I guess I'm old fashioned in thinking that a universities primary mission is higher education, not putting on sports and entertainment events. Perhaps pay scales should be commiserate with employees who are central to the mission and based on experience and results.

And also if this is the model where we are at, lets not call them students anymore. They are not students, they are employees of the University.

they can be both a student and get paid to scale by the university for a job. universities employ tens of thousands of their students every year. feels like you're defaulting to the extreme here because of the money being much higher.

Why do coaches get millions - even at Richmond?

I'll stick with my example - more valuable to the University of Richmond: 4 years of Kevin Anderson or 21 years of Chris Mooney?

none of us chose Richmond because we knew anything about any individual teacher here.
UR has a good reputation and ranking. that's based on the quality of the students it attracts. that's the only way to rank colleges. there's no way to rank teachers.

I was in academia for awhile so perhaps I have a biased perspective. There are a lot of students who attend a school to have the opportunity to learn from certain professors. Taking classes from Nobel Laureates or other legendary figures in your area of interest is a huge factor for some students.

That probably isn’t the reason why students choose to attend Richmond, but it is a factor at other types of schools

So if I’m doing the math right, we had two open spots pre-portal, and have had 3 declare intent to transfer (Tyne, Thomas, McGlothin), so we have 5 open spots?

I’m sort of operating on the theory that if we had any other departures we’d have heard by now, but that could certainly be wrong.

So I guess it’s now 6 open spots. Egad.

We desperately need some size. Our only guys taller than 6’6” are two incoming freshmen and a redshirt. At least 2 transfers there, probably 3. I count JRob as a big, I don’t think he is destined to be a 5 for us sman, I really think that was done out of necessity this year not because that was ever the Intent. But I’ve been plenty wrong.

We have no proven wing. Tanner has demonstrated he can’t be the guy there. Ok backup, 10-15mpg, but we gotta get more athletic there. So I’m getting at least 2 guys 6’5”+ if possible.

That leaves 1 guard spot, maybe a 2nd if we don’t get 3 forwards. But since just about everyone else on the current roster is a PG/SG type, I think this is the lowest priority.

But honestly, everything is a priority given how little we have in returning minutes/points.
