What do we want for our men’s basketball program

I knew as soon as I saw Tanner was named a starter this year, that it was going to be a long year.

Starters should be Aiden, Johnston, Lopez, Daughtry, and Walz. JRob and Harper should both be getting significant minutes at this point, as they are our potential future with more limited minutes for AP, Tanner, and Tyne (who has also seemingly regressed or at best not gotten any better).

Also did we just waste 2 scholarship years on McGothlin? I would like to see him but given the fact that he can't even get mop up minutes, I doubt he is any good either. Mooney is a self-serving preservationist, but also not a complete idiot. If McGothlin could play, he would be.
Frustrating that Mooney talks up so many guys who never do anything. I am all for a coach not throwing guys under the bus with negative talk, and Mooney is good about that, but that doesn't mean you need to give them big time praise and build them up like they will be all A-10 guys when they clearly aren't.

We heard it with Noyes, I think with Tanner also, and we heard it multiple times with JRob and McGlothin last year.

McGlothin had half a dozen offers, including Mason and San Francisco....I know we don't have the practice-level view, but I sure wish we'd gotten to see some more game opportunities to get a better idea of what he can and can't do.
Yes, I would like to see him play for sure. He looks like he can play. But, also clearly that he is behind 11 guys on the roster including 2 (Tanner and AP) who play his position and also have very clear limitations as A-10 level players.

It is absolutely ridiculous that after starting Tanner last year and seeing him do nothing to warrant him starting and eventually having to remove him from the starting line-up on a team that was pretty much devoid of talent. That Mooney said sure lets do the exact same damn thing with Tanner this year. He spent the entire OOC starting him again this year, even though the team had more talent this year, watching him give the same results as last year (which is to put it mildly lackluster).

Tanner went from starting the entire OOC to playing zero minutes in his last game. Meanwhile, the dude who took his place in the rotation, a freshman, showed us more in 1 game than we have seen from Tanner in 3 years. What a frickin waste.

We played an OOC that clearly shouted to everyone, we aren't playing for an NCAA bid, but yet Mooney is wasting away playing mediocre upper classman instead of trying to develop his young core. It makes zero sense, other than Mooney is padding his win total to tell us we are in better shape. Long term of course this hurts the program, but CM doesn't care as long as he gets to collect his check another year.

I am thinking more and more that it isn't done to be intentional about padding stats, it as simple as just that our staff isn't the best at their jobs in the NCAA division I landscape and our administration/money guys like having a clean cut, West End dad, Princeton grad who is a nice guy running the program that catches lightning in a bottle once every 7ish or so years on average.

I try not to be too critical of JOC because he’s the only media talking about Spider hoops and I appreciate that, but what are with these questions? We’re in the heart of A10 play and are coming off an embarrassing loss to a peer institution and rather than asking about that we’re getting questions about how the administration can support Mooney more or the previous question about gambling in athletics? Those are off-season kinds of questions not middle of the season kinds of questions. Ridiculous

Everyone of them. I suspect UVA alums will disagree about the Grounds being an urban campus. As to VCU, to some folks the concrete jungle is attractive. I do not fall in that category and I don’t believe it’s a recruiting advantage to be labeled as an urban school. What a silly excuse.
NIL Funds, I can’t answer as it’s a secret. However as a duel sport athlete at UR I was proud to win for my school.
National tv exposure? Well you had that Saturday. What do you want the talking heads repeating ad nauseam, winningest coach in UR history, longevity, wedding planner, Princeton offense, played for Princeton and Pete Carrill.
Give me more.
Couldn't make this up if i tried.

Looks what ran into the RTD. I'll let someone who has covered Spider Athletics his whole life cover it.

First of all it’s a paywall. 2nd, is this from JOC.????

What we see in recruiting, you see that some lower-level programs you would never expect are paying a whole lot of money for incoming freshmen.

“And so I think it’s really hard to have an accurate picture of the landscape right now because there are no guidelines, or rules, or accounting of anything. So you’re going a little bit on rumor, and a little bit on pretty solid sources. But you have to have an understanding of it, and I think it’s up to (UR coaches) more than the administration to make sure that we keep them informed and abreast of what is going on, and what do things look like out there.”

2nd Yes…

meaning NIL info isn't public. coaches don't know for sure what other teams are offering kids. they do hear numbers, but in many cases don't know what to believe. honestly ... parents of recruits who are courted by multiple schools probably understand the landscape better than coaches. but while they know, you can't trust their info either as they have their own agenda.

The JOC article says “College basketball recruiters have known for a couple of years now that recruits are less interested in academic programs, facilities and personal fit at a school. Those factors, which once formed the basis of college decisions, have been superseded by terms of financial agreements associated with their signings. This goes for incoming freshmen and transfers.”

Honestly, if a player doesn’t value academic programs and personal fit then if I were the coach at Richmond I wouldn’t want the player. There is no upside to having a revolving door if one expects to build a program.

can't paint all recruits with one brush. some absolutely care about academics and putting in 4 years at one place ... memories with teammates and coaches and a bond with fans.

certainly others prioritize maximizing their earnings. many will never get paid to play again. it's a one time chance to get a bag.

So can’t read JOC’s new article about NIL “can a small school like UR keep up in the A10?” but what on earth kind of question is that? First of all, UR did well 2 years ago winning a regular season title with NIL. So yes, clearly we can keep up, but the question is whether we can consistently keep up. Secondly, the women’s A10 teams are all getting paid NIL, and our women’s team seems to be doing alright.

This is the kind of thing that ticks me off and where I agree with 23 and other people about excuse making. JOC is out here asking these dumb/excuse making questions to Mooney right after we lost to a Saint Louis team who wiped the floor with us. A Saint Louis team, by the way, that was very bad 2 years ago and has done a complete turnaround with a new coach. The irony of asking these questions about competing with Saint Louis, George Mason, and VCU and attributing it to NIL rather than pointing out the fact they all happen to have new coaches too, is absurd.

I have defended Mooney and our administration with several things, when I felt is right but I call things as I see them.

These articles are BS excuse making. On an A10 level our NIL is great, our facilities are great, and our fan base is great. It just irks me that there is no accountability that maybe the fact we aren’t performing well this year is because of poor scheduling, mediocre recruiting, and having offensive schemes that can be stopped by a zone, and defensive schemes that have 5’10 Tyne guarding a 6’11 Avila. Then we’re out here asking the hard hitting questions about support the university can have for our program? Are you kidding me?! Our performance has been underwhelming right now and it is not because of NIL.

Mooney, king of excuse making
You know what, you are absolutely right. Excuse making at all levels right now. I cannot believe that these were legitimate questions JOC genuinely decided to ask and of all the things to write about with our team right now at this point of the season, he chose this.

Diversionary antics are a simple out instead of addressing real issues and failures.

For example would rather hear about the repeated coverage of our guards on Avila.
