Fantastic podcast as always guys! Thanks to Jim for being interviewed. It was very insightful and a great explanation of his role.
Some things that struck me with the interview.
I liked how Jim talked about the BoT, admin prioritizing the new house settlement for men’s basketball. Also glad to hear that the university has a full understanding of how athletics can raise the entire school profile by bringing the school and community together and increase exposure.
Interesting to hear that the spider collective won’t exist anymore, but I guess it makes sense, since the 2 new development funds are essentially what the collective was. Now though it seems that there’s the additional bonus that it’s tax deductible and being integrated with greater university campaign funds which is a big plus and something I don’t believe the spider collective was.
Also interesting that learning part of the goal with the new A10 commissioner is transparency among all conference members of the house settlement funds each school is giving. I think a better expectation is setting a minimum requirement of house settlement funds that each school needs to give on average each year.
Sounds like there’s more ways to engage and interact with coaching staff and players if you’re a donor, but my assumption is to get included in those calls you have to be a big donor. What about ways to get people involved and connected to the men’s/women’s basketball programs who donate less? I will continue to beat this drum, but establishing a membership level like we had in the old spider club days would be great.
Funny, was looking for something on Youtube and this old "Spider Scoop Podcast" with Noah came in my feed. I don't even recall ever seeing this, but I probably just forgot. Looks like Mooney is not adverse to going on Podcasts so will be expecting him on Spider Sound Off soon .
He gave us a nice interview when we got started, but that was before we felt confident having live guests. I will circle back and see if we can do a pod in the Robins Center sometime soon. Both teams have been generous with access.
A few comments:
1) What in the world are you guys doing. Nearly 40 minutes of content in an episode? I had to sit in my car in the work parking lot an extra 10 minutes.
2) Honestly, I wouldn't want you to bother Mooney with a podcast request during the season. He already has media obligations and hopefully he has more pressing things to do. I think getting to ask a question or two after a game is sufficient.
3) I do like the interviews with people around the program and glad you got to talk to Jim Merritt in this episode. He has his work cut out for himself as any school outside of the P4 is at a disadvantage and a small school like Richmond even more so.
4) Agree that both games this weekend will be a challenge for the teams. I think both opponents are formidable and you know that exams have taken them out of the normal routine.
