Robins Center experience

The sound system was horrible. I am glad they are finally addressing it.
I agree that the sound system needed significant work. The video boards seemed fine to me as long as they were displaying the stats and other intended information. Seemed to be operator error more than an equipment issue to me.

The video boards would go down a lot during the game. I don't know if that was a technical issue or operator error.

A few thoughts on the updated RC experience from the JMU scrimmage:
  1. New sound system and video boards: My first impression was positive — definite upgrade in quality realizing most of the audio last night was canned including National Anthem.
  2. Halftime “entertainment”: Hopefully the student tricycle race was a one-time thing for this season. A little investment in real halftime shows, like we used to have, would go a long way.
  3. East entrance closure: The usual entrance near the bridge was closed last night. I’ve used that entrance since my student days, and its closure makes for a much longer walk from where I park (in front of the old Jeter/Freeman area) — same for folks from the old X lot. More importantly, with fewer entrances, there was a noticeable backup at the metal detectors, even on a low-attendance night. I can’t see how that setup will ever work for sold-out games.

Best thing about new video boards was that they seemed to work properly the entire game!

Lots of info to absorb. Will take some practice to learn where things are and where to look.

Go Spiders!

I put my comments in with my exhibition recap, but I am hoping for additional improvements as it seems like the project is not complete and this was an exhibition game.

The good news was that everything was operational, so the game production staff is ahead of schedule too. /s

My thoughts:
Video Boards: Seem to be much better quality, but the configuration of statistics will take some getting used to. Additional advertising boards around the court were distracting.
Sound system: Music was loud, but I couldn't understand a thing the PA announcer said.
Lighting: Lighting on floor was improved, but some lights pointed into the stands were blinding. Left with a headache.
Team: Looked pretty good. Should be improvement over last year, but not familiar with JMU enough to determine what the level of competition was. Robinson and Lopez were standout newcomers. Walz didn't score much, but his assists and passing was superb.

Lighting, my eyes are sensitive to bright lights, have worn baseball hat for years. Seems to help. I agree with PA announcer, although he was clear at times.
Walz, said to those around me. he was serving more dishes than on Thanksgiving Day.

I didn’t notice a lighting difference, but always wear a baseball cap so perhaps that is the reason why. I thought the speakers were much clearer, but the audio levels were not the best. I think that’s a new system learning curve type of thing.

Agree with your statement on not understanding PA announcer. My daughter’s boyfriend was at the game with me, and he said the same thing. So it’s not an age thing. Me thinks if they invested $$ in a new audio system, I’m not seeing any real difference vs last year’s audio. Maybe it just needs tweaking, but I like clean and perfectly clear audio quality. And last night wasn’t it for my daughter’s bf and me.

Apparently this is what we are rolling out for the regular season as well.

The "fan experience" portion of the games is at an all time low. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles, but can't we at least put forth a little effort? Are the ball shooter and t-shirt cannon broken? Are there no plate spinners or trampoline dunkers we can get to come perform? No Chick-fil-A parachutes left?

fully agreed about the lack of entertaining halftime entertainment ...

Also still believe with the East Entrance closed this year (i.e. from the bridge area near old X lot) for I think both students and non-students, think for heavy attendance games, there will be a real backlog of folks waiting to get through the metal detectors.

For me it’s the audio system. I’m not hearing much difference than last year for supposed upgrade. My wife feels the same as do couple men in row behind me. A good PA system should be clean, clear, and volume should be above all noise in the venue. This isn’t the case in our opinion.

I think the audio system is better, BUT the feed for the announcer isn’t balanced or something because you can’t hear him as well. My wife and I both noticed that the pep band was significantly louder at the beginning of the game. I just think they have no idea how the mixer board works.
