Random (Fun) Spiders Games: What Fun Games Do You Remember?

One of my clearest memories is of Darien Brothers late 3 to send us to OT against VCU. If my memory is right we were down by 7 with about 30 seconds left and had a frantic comeback and ended up winning.

That year's team had a ton of talent and should have accomplished much more than they did though.
This was my freshman year, must have been Jan or Feb 2013. My first rivalry game. When Brothers hit the 3 to send it to OT we just went nuts. Incredible game, and that was the night I learned that Kendall Anthony was a force to be reckoned with.

This was a great game and I was there with my brother who went to “the other school”. When the game went into overtime I got to cheerfully say “free basketball”. He wasn’t amused.

You were two years behind me at TJ. Chris Howard was in my class and I knew both his brothers and his sister. The oldest brother graduated from John Marshall but the other three transferred and graduated from TJ.

When we tied the game, the camera panned to the VCU bench and there was the look of
defeat in all of them.

I am guessing I may know Carolinaspider

i feel like I should know both River cup and Carolina spider. I grew up in Sherwood Park and went to school with the Howards, played basketball thru 9th grade and graduated from TJ in 1971
I was at TJ thru 10th grade and got bussed to Jayem and graduated in 72.

Sunday, 12/5/21 – Northern Iowa game: Flew into Des Moines early that morning from RVA via DTW and drove straight through to Cedar Falls/Waterloo for the noon-ish Central time start. Pretty sure I was the only Spiders fan there besides Gilly’s family and friends, who had come to see him up from KC to break the NCAA steals record. And was very cool to be there for the moment and also see good Spiders win.

Had planned to drive back to Des Moines afterward for an early Monday flight, but after a couple of beverages at game decided to stay at a Courtyard in Waterloo instead. Not much happening on a Sunday night in that sleepy town, but I found a decent spot for dinner and watched some football. Had to leave the hotel around 2 a.m. for the drive back to the airport. A cold front had rolled through, and it was one of the windiest drives I can remember across those Iowa cornfields — could barely open the rental car door to get gas before heading to the airport.

Really do enjoy going to away games and if we keep the wins up, considering Belmont in Nashville on 12/3.

The GW game up there in the early or mid-2000s when we had Skrocki, who must have been a senior. GW was very good. One of their guys dunked in warmups, which back then was not allowed, so we got to shoot technical fouls before the game started and we were up 2-0 at the opening tip, as I recall. It was a rowdy environment, we ended up winning a hard-fought game in front of a sellout crowd.

lol, that happened to me coaching an 8th grade travel team. had a couple kids who could dunk and one did in warmups. ref comes towards me so I start the conversation with "I'll tell him not to do that". he says that's a T, they'll shoot before the tip. OK, I laughed. couldn't argue ... but seemed overly serious. I understood the rule back when rims could bend. not any more.

we were up pretty good at halftime. I was tempted to tell the kid to do it again.

This was definitely one of the best games ever vs. VCU, if I remember correctly VCU had Treveon Graham and we had water bug Kendall Anthony....lol

The 1973 and 1974 wins over Tech at the Robins Center were epic. The 1974 game was "Dump Losin' Lew" night.

No UR male student could forget Tech's cheerleaders and their tight orange shirts and white hot pants and boots. You DID NOT see anything remotely close to that at Westhampton College in that era, when the university was still mostly segregated by sex.

In 1976 we beat VCU at the Coliseum on a last-second basket by John Campbell.

Wood I remember “fire Lew” signs being held up in the stands before we evolved to Billboards 😎
