Richmond at Kansas

I don't think anyone was crying when Wainwright left. He was a good coach, i remember him from his UNCW games too.

You want me to fire up the tapes from us beating Purdue, beating Iowa or Vandy in NCAA, or beating a ranked VCU win on the road? What's point on this clip. I see the ranking next to Kansas's name, not ours.

The point of the post is to remember a historic shot made by Tony Dibbons for Richmond. Winning at Kansas is almost unheard of. That’s why I enjoy this moment. It’s mostly for the players not the coach.

That would be true if it didn't say notice Mooney wasn't the coach.

I enjoy that moment too. I remember it well.

While I will always enjoy this bit, it’s super sad to have to live so far in the past.

We need to make some new (positive) memories.
We are all frustrated, but I don't think we have to go back to that game. The A-10 tourney title and the win over Iowa was pretty awesome. But, even that seems like a long time ago after these past 2 seasons.

I’m with VT and SpiderWill on this one. To be fair to Mooney, we’ve had some great wins in his tenure here since that game at Kansas. Win against Vanderbilt in NCAA, Cal, Purdue, Wisconsin, at Kentucky, Iowa in NCAA and I’ll count conference opponents for A10 title like Dayton and Davidson. These are just ones from the top of my head.

This ties in the to what I’ve been trying to say in my leaving a legacy thread. If Mooney were to leave at the end of the season, I think many would think of him as a great guy, was well liked by players and fans as a person, had some big moments at UR, but unfortunately his recruiting and coaching philosophy didn’t align with today’s world of college athletics. Additionally, fans would appreciate the self awareness he has in acknowledging his limitations and not further hindering the growth of our basketball program by allowing someone else to take over. In this case, I think he would still leave a positive legacy overall to most, myself included.

If he keeps dragging it out until the end of his contract and we continue to produce results like this. I think the sentiment from a lot of the fans will shift to a more negative view of his tenure here, and also that of our athletic director since he’s the one in charge to make a change.

Get that Kentucky win out of that convo. That was one of the worst Kentucky teams of the 20th century. Not an accomplishment. He also lost to La Salle that same year. That season was the biggest failure of all time

A win at a blue blood like Kentucky is still impressive in my eyes even if it was a down year for them. I’m not talking about our season success overall in this case, just good individual wins over his tenure here. Ironically that 2003-2004 team that beat Kansas also lost to La Salle a few games prior, but did end up making the NCAA tournament.

I refuse to include any win from that 2020-21 season as that was mooneys biggest failure as a coach. Projected 1st seed to 8th seed. Nothing good came from that year

I’m aware, my point is really that there’s very little to feel excited about and instead we’re retreading the Kansas game, however great that was.

Too many of the program’s detractors act as if there were no exhilarating wins, and too many of the supporters act as if there were no devasting losses.
