Hope some of the homecoming crowd takes a look at the women’s team in less than 30 minutes from now.

I am out of town, but would have liked to see how this year’s team is jelling.

Would be great to see a brief report.

Porter telling me what I am going to cover while he is out of town is priceless…

Some notes:
-No scores displayed throughout the game
-Skylar not in uniform so must be injured
-Lots of minutes for freshmen Ava, Rayne and Shanika in a ten player rotation. All had nice moments and looked super comfortable. Rayne had a 4 point play and her friends and family went nuts!
-Starting lineup had Sam and Peyton along with big 3.

Have another (away) scrimmage next weekend. Will spend the Oct 27th episode focused on the 10/25 men’s exhibition with JMU and making fun of Porter.

Let the sparring begin.

Thanks for the update on the Women’s scrimmage.

More than a little surprised that Simon didn't start. Peyton starting isn't shocking but the real question is going to be how much is she going to be able to contribute - - - and we need her on both ends!

After that game, I see Simon fighting Sam for time at the 5 versus as a wing.
I think that's always been the case. She really isn't a wing and has been a successful player in our league as a big!

The wing opposite Rachel is still the great unknown for us. Who will it be and how much do we get from them?

Might be okay against teams that are smaller in size but we need to be bigger in the 4 and 5 spot against the Texas, TCU’s, and UCLA’s of the world, which is what this program is aspiring to become.

Well Maggie is holding down one of those spots regardless and I don't think there is much if any size difference between Simon and Dewey (1" as listed); especially in "playing size" (how big you play vs actual height). Unless we are going to play Manthy, Simon and Maggie is probably as big as we can play. Simon was and is a big - - never was a wing and doesn't have wing skills. Defensively, she might be able to do OK there, but she isn't a fit on offense at the wing at all. She was and is an excellent rebounder, solid shot blocker (Top 10 in A-10 in both last year) and good interior defender, so while she can probably hold down the fort defensively on the wing, it takes her away from what she is good at on both ends of the floor. Lets remember that she has been picked as a pre-season all A-10 performer and this from coaches who watched her play last year and she played as a big. If Sam beats her out for playing time, that's great news because we know Simon can play. But it won't be because we need to be bigger (because Sam doesn't really offer that), but because Sam is playing better! Again, this would be excellent news!

As for Texas, TCU et al - - - we are going to be undersized in those and there isn't much we can do about it (unless Manthy is ready which would be a surprise (a very pleasant one though). We will be about the same size-wise at the big spots and likely smaller on the wing that Hill and Jiminez manned last year and smaller off the bench at the bigs spot that Camden held down last year. But none of these are materially smaller, so size isn't a huge concern. Production is a concern given how much Addie and Hill/Jiminez gave us last year at these open spots.

Great analysis as always Philly. I thought Dewey was 6’3” so you’re probably right, the 1 inch height difference isn’t going to be a huge factor. The great teams in the country have size and talent. We have the talent, I’m sure worried about how we will match up against the better P5 teams. Still, it seems as though we’re going to have at least 6’ players on the court at one time, which will be great match-up wise against 95% of the teams we play this year.

What do you mean about production? Scoring? I think we’ll be getting double digit games out of Maggie and Rachel (15+ PPG avg). If we can get about 8-10 PPG from Sweeney and then someone like Simon, I think we’ll be in good shape. Replacing Budnik will be tough but I am hopefully several players will step up.

So mo I don't really mean scoring. At least not solely scoring!

By production, I mean minutes where they fill their roles on both ends of the floor with minutes that contribute to our success. This is more than just not killing us or being neutral. I will use Hill and Jimenez as thats the spot I am really worried about. Hill contributed rock solid toughness, took on physical defensive matchups, was an excellent secondary ballhander and enough of a shooting threat to force teams to cover her. She was remarkably productive in that role and her abilities in that role were very much needed by the team and not very duplicative of anyone else either. Jiminez was similar in that she excelled in a role. She was far and away our best perimeter defender and took the toughest perimeter assignment and made opponent work her tail off if she expected to do anything. Like Hill, she shot well enough to make teams cover her or pay if they didn't. Their minutes within our systems and their roles were as productive as say Rachels IMO, its just that Rachel is more adept and skilled at scoring. As Moon man could stand to learn, production comes in many forms (you know like rebounding). When I look at what Addie did, I feel better about Simon being able to back fill some of that production and certainly Maggie, Rachel and Ally can all contribute a little more production each. What I worry about is replacing the two way production and toughness of Hill and Jimenez. Its not that I look at our players and don't think they can do it. Its rather than I just haven't seen enough of anyone in that role to say I am comfortable knowing where that production will come from. As I have said before. I get the most confidence though from the fact that the coach, who I believe is excellent and who knows his team and his players didn't see a burning need to go get a grad transfer in this spot. So I am believing he does see where he can get that production. But as much as I do believe that, I will feel better once i see it live!

The beauty of college sports is that the pieces change yearly. Good programs find ways to put the pieces they have together, I believe in Coach Roussell.
